ABOUT THE SCHOOL
THE FARM TOURISM CONFERENCE
The International School of Sustainable Tourism (ISST) is a non-stock, non-profit corporation registered in the Philippines dedicated to education and technical training of manpower in order to viably operate sustainable tourism in the ASEAN countries.
ISST’s Farm Tourism Conference has been held every July since 2013, attended by an average of 350 delegates from the agriculture, tourism, and investment sectors. Experts from the farm tourism scene in the Philippines and beyond have shared their knowledge and best practices as speakers and instructors, while successful farm tourism operators have opened their doors to delegates for experience-based learning. The lecture-discussions and farm tours provide a holistic approach to understanding the industry.
The school offers short, intensive courses conducted by recognized international and local experts on various areas of sustainable tourism, such as farm guiding, ecolodge architecture and planning, avian tourism, community-based tourism, and others. The school also initiates other learning opportunities, such as conferences, observational trips,, and consultancy services. Its main campus is in the Subic Bay Freeport Area, Zambales, with rentable amenities such as meeting rooms, conference areas, sleeping quarters, and a theater that seats over 500 visitors. Now on its 5th year of operations, we are thankful that ISST has gained recognition, most recently from National Geographic Traveller’s award-winning writer and editor, Mr. Costas Christ. In his article “A Tale of Two Islands in the Philippines”, he makes mention of the school as “the first sustainable-tourism school in the Asia-Pacific region, educating a new generation of leaders”.
ABOUT FARM TOURISM Farm Tourism is the business of attracting visitors and travellers to farm areas, generally for educational and recreational purposes, that encourages economic activity for the farm and the community.. Like ecotourism, farm tourism represents low-impact travel, and empowers local communities, socially and economically. On one hand, economic hardships and changes in the agriculture and livestock industries have encouraged farmers to diversify their income. On the other hand, there has been growing interest in healthy lifestyle, locally-grown produce, and new types of travel. Farm tourism can address both needs. Given this, it’s no wonder that farm tourism has seen steady growth in the past few years, not just in the Philippines, but across the globe.
Every year, the Farm Tourism Conference highlights the current trends in the field, and serves to bring awareness to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) annual theme. Now on its fourth year, the 2016 Farm Tourism Conference is set to be bigger and better than ever, with the introduction of the Farmer’s Market and the Farm Tourism Exhibit, to allow participants to see innovation and diversity from all over the country in terms of local produce and products. This year, the conference celebrates the International Year of Pulses, as declared by the UN FAO, and spotlights the growing trends in the farm tourism: honeybee propagation, and mushroom farming.
INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF PULSES The Food and Agriculture Organization has announced 2016 as the International Year of Pulses, to bring awareness to the contributions of this type of crop to food security, healthy living, culture and the environment.
Pulses are annual leguminous crops yielding between one and 12 grains or seeds of variable size, shape and colour within a pod, used for both food and feed. The term “pulses” is limited to crops harvested solely for dry grain, thereby excluding crops harvested green for food, which are classified as vegetable crops, as well as those crops used mainly for oil extraction and leguminous crops that are used exclusively for sowing purposes.
