MINSTER JR/SR HIGH SCHOOL BOARD REPORT NOVEMBER 2014
Sophomores Ali Borgerding and Jenny Trzaska have been selected as HOBY (Hugh O’Brian Leadership) delegates to the academy this summer. The design is to assist high school sophomores to recognize their leadership talents and apply them to become effective ethical leaders in their home, school, workplace, and community. Minster’s Youth Leadership Association is comprised of forty-five members from freshman through seniors. Mrs. Seaver and Mrs. Meyer have met twice with all of the students in its initial phase of planning. Our dual enrollment number hit seventy-six students that have returned their applications. Our high school offers dual enrollment courses in World Studies, English III, English IV, Pre-Calculus, Anatomy and Sociology through Urbana University. Tech Applications and Advanced Graphic Design are dual enrollment courses with Rhodes State University. The Academic Team wrapped up their regular season this past week, and the JV Scholastic Bowl will be held at Marion Local on Nov. 10, followed by the Varsity Bowl at New Bremen on Nov. 17. The fall administration of the O.G.T. occurred during the week of Oct. 27. Three students on campus, and one student off campus took part in various portions of the testing. Results will be forthcoming in early December. Many students (46) were recognized from the first quarter for their work in the classroom (3.5 GPA or higher), high attendance rate (less than two absences), and no discipline reports. Homework passes and gift cards were distributed, and a special entire grade level attendance award went to the 8th graders for the highest rate (98.7%) at the end of the first quarter. State representative Mr. Jim Jordan addressed our senior class on Oct. 22. 8th graders returned safely from the D.C. trip on Oct. 24. A junior high dance was held on Oct. 25 with ninety-nine students in attendance. Our Josten’s representative, Mr. Bob Eldridge, met with the freshman class relative to class rings on Oct. 29. Mrs. Schmiesing peformed required vision screenings for the 7th and 9th graders on Nov. 3 and 5. Representatives from U.C. and U.D. have visited our building within the past two weeks. The Drama Club presented “For the Love of Lucy” on two performance nights Nov. 6 and 8. I attended a College Credit Plus meeting in Piqua on Oct. 24, and also at Rhodes State on Nov. 6. Parent-Teacher Conferences were held on Nov. 6 and 7. Total numbers and percentages will be forthcoming in the December report. A freshman grade level parent meeting was held on Nov. 6 in the evening to address the new high school graduation requirements. Mrs. Seaver and I reviewed House Bill 487 which covers the new additions of end-of-course exams along with readiness for success in college and in the work place. Congratulations to our fall athletic programs that have produced these highlights thus far: *The girls’ volleyball team captured a district championship with wins over New Knoxville and St. Henry. The Wildcats lost to Ft. Loramie in the regional semi-final at Tippecanoe High School. Cassie Jutte was recently recognized as a second team All-Ohio selection, and Regan Hahn was named honorable mention. *The varsity football team has moved into playoffs and will play Mechanicsburg in the regional quarter-finals this Friday night at home. A win has the Wildcats squaring off with the Versailles—Miami East winner on Fri. Nov. 14.
*The girls’ cross-country team finished in 4th place at the state meet at Hebron on Nov. 1. Morgan Pohl and Kaci Bornhorst were named All-Ohio due to their top 25 finish. *Golf banquets for the girls’ and boys’ programs were held recently along with the volleyball awards this past Tuesday evening.
