Dear Families, Welcome to 8th Grade Science! I look forward to getting to know you and working with you throughout the year. I am excited for another year at Delta Middle School! I was a student here years ago, and I now have my own child in the school. I am looking forward to the rich experiences and caring environment offered here at Delta Middle School for my own children as well as providing the same for yours. I also want to announce that our 8th grade field trip is scheduled for November 3rd and 4th. We will be going to Solar Energy International in Paonia for a day of energy related activities. Half of the 8th graders will go on the 3rdth and the other half on the 4th. I would love to have parent volunteers along, but you need to be on the District’s approved volunteer list. It can take up to a month for approval by the school board. If you are interested in attending please call (874-8046) or stop by the office now to start the process of becoming a District approved volunteer. Please review the information about this class below and on the other side of this page. Sign and return the bottom portion of this letter to me by Friday 8/21 indicating you have reviewed the policies and expectations for this class. Thank you. Sincerely, Mr. Hovel Email:

Materials Students Should Have Daily: Pencil or Pen, Text, Notebook, Colored Pencils, Glue Stick, Calculator Assignments: A schedule of assignments and tests can be found on Power School and on the class webpage. powerschool.deltaschools.com/public/ dms8science.blogspot.com Notebook Requirement You will need a composition book exclusively for this class that can be turned in and left with Mr. Hovel. This notebook will be a record of your participation in class activities as well as a place to write about scientific thoughts and questions you may have. The work in this notebook will be graded and should be very helpful in preparing students for tests Composition books with about 100 sheets are recommended. Up to two notebooks may be needed during the year. Each class will have a shelf where you may choose to leave your notebook to help ensure it will be with you every class meeting. If you leave your notebook in Mr. Hovel’s room you accept the risk it could be damaged or disappear because others will have access to it. A 3-ring binder with pockets inside the covers or a pocket folder is also recommended to keep returned assignments and handouts organized. Binders will not be able to be stored in the classroom. Turning in Work Much of our work will be done in your science notebook. You will need to be able to leave these with Mr. Hovel upon request. You can always turn in work by handing it to Mr. Hovel or leaving it in the basket on the teacher desk. •
Cheating Students need to avoid the appearance of cheating as well as cheating itself. Consequences for cheating or the appearance of cheating may include but are not limited to a zero on the assignment for all involved and referral to the office. Students working together must share the work if they expect to share the grade. Makeup & Late Work Missing work can be turned in until the day of the Unit test. Missing work should always be made up as soon as possible. A 5% per class period late penalty will be applied unless the work is late due to an absence. When work is turned in late due to absence then the school’s makeup work policy will apply before the 5% per class period late penalty is applied. Work turned in after the Unit test will earn no credit.
