East Goes West 2017! Dear Third Grade Family, The East Goes West History Festival is coming soon! We are planning enriching experiences for your children to extend their understanding of Western Expansion in U.S. history (1803-1890). There will be demonstrations of folk music and stories, quilting and handicrafts, as well as early technologies developed in the 1800’s throughout the week of February 21-24. Friday, FEBRUARY 24, 2017 is “Pioneer Day” when the children dress up and get a chance to participate in hands-on activities. Rotating around VHEE, your child will visit a chuck wagon campfire, a pioneer schoolhouse, a Pony Express demonstration and more! Your support is needed to ensure a successful Pioneer Day.
1. Each student will be assigned a Journey on the Trail project. Each student will “become” a
person traveling on the trail and will dress as that character for their class presentation and for Pioneer Day. (Please look for more info from your classroom teacher regarding this assignment.)
2. Send any items of interest that you could share with the children (pottery, baskets, kitchen utensils, fur pelts, oil lamps, quilts, clothing, paintings, prints, etc.). Not only are these of interest to the students; they enhance our decor on Pioneer Day. Please label your items and send in prior to Pioneer Day.
3. VOLUNTEER TO HELP! We need helping hands to make all of the activities run smoothly.
