Kia Ora, Welcome back to 2017 for an exciting year of learning. It has been fantastic catching up with our school families and the children about the holidays. A huge welcome to all new students and families who have started at South Hornby School this year, we hope you enjoy the learning experiences that we offer. It is great to see a healthy mix of old and new faces all ready and willing to get stuck into another year of exciting learning challenges. The staff would also like to welcome back Mrs Sarah Signal to the South Hornby team. We have a very full term during the next 11 weeks, and the Learning Communities are busy planning exciting experiences for your children. Late last year we were gifted the name Te Manu Tuku from Te Taumutu. This name will sit alongside our current school name. Māori kites are known as manu tukutuku. Manu means both kite and bird, and the word tukutuku refers to the winding out of the line as the kite ascends. Manu Tukutuku were used for recreation, communication and celebration. We have chosen to name our Learning Communities based on our school name therefore they are named on the four predominant winds that are prevalent in Christchurch. This year we have re-organised the school into Learning Communities, we are excited at this change and look forward to the exciting possibilities it has to offer. Learning Community Year 1-3 Lead by: Angela Jones Te Ope Ruaraki (Year 1 and 2) Nor-Easter Teachers: Paula Montofre Sarah Signal Michaela Murray Te Maru-e-taki-nei (Year 2-3) Nor-West Teachers: Kate Dickson Angela Jones

In order to ensure that parent/teacher communication is still a priority your child still has a “home” teacher. This teacher will still be your first contact should you have any questions or concerns. Please feel free to visit your child(ren)’s “classroom” as often as possible asking questions about their learning and the environment they are learning in. We will also keep you up to date with the progress of the new South Hornby School environment, and will share all the very latest plans and it is our aim to continue to involve the community, and more importantly the students in this process. Implementing South Hornby School’s “Growing Heroes” vision and values: Our students will continue to learn how to use their People Powers and Learning Powers at South Hornby School and within their community. It is shaping up to be a big year for our community as we gear up to move into our new school. We appreciate all the support we receive from our families and whanau and can’t wait to celebrate this exciting time with you all. I look forward to working alongside you and your children over the next six months in my role as Acting Principal. Kirsten Harris-Tatana.
WELCOME TO NEW CHILDREN A big welcome to the following children who have started at South Hornby School. We hope your association with us is a happy one: Rocki McKernan, Oliver Comeskey, Destiny Biscoe, Olly Unger, Liam Petrie, Riley McLeish, Ocey McGuinness, Oliver Dunlop-Garlick, Brooklyn Tangiora, Mali Rankin, Cadie Sumpter, Zalena Murray, Braiden Ballantyne, Jakob Roberts. FAMILY FUN DAY/“MEET THE TEACHERS ”AFTERNOON Next Friday, 17th February 12.00pm – 2.40pm, we are having Family Fun Day/”Meet the Teachers” Afternoon here at school. This will be an informal gathering on the school field, with a variety of fun activities such as a bouncy castle, swimming and sports equipment. Come along with your family and have a picnic and introduce yourself to your child/ren’s teacher, asking them any questions that you may have. If you need to see your child/ren teacher on a more formal basis please make an appointment suitable to you both. ROAD PATROL We will continue to cross the children at the lights at the intersection of Seymour Street and Shands Road. Before school, unaccompanied children will cross Seymour Street at the lights. After school, all children who are going home down Amyes Road and crossing Seymour Street, will be supervised by a duty teacher to cross at the lights. All unaccompanied children leaving school through the Seymour Street gate will line up at the yellow line outside Room 12 and wait for the duty teacher to escort them out. SCHOOL INVOICES Invoices will be sent out early in the term listing payments required for the term, for example Learning Community trips. Please endeavor to pay these on time as it makes it easier for the teachers planning the trip and completing the budget. SCHOOL TRIP/INTERNET USE/WEBSITE PERMISSION/MILK IN SCHOOLS Every child will receive a School Trip/Internet Use/Website Permission/Milk in Schools form to be signed in each category and returned to your child’s classroom teacher. We are updating our data base for parent/caregiver’s emails and would appreciate if you could add your email onto this form. Thank you for your time. CELLPHONES If you want your child to bring a cellphone to school, it MUST be handed into the school office each day. Cellphones are not to be kept in the classrooms or your child’s school bag. ABSENCES If your child is absent from school you are required to telephone the school office and leave a message on our absence line (Option 1) before 9 a.m. stating the reason your child/ren will not be attending school. If your child is unwell we don’t need to know what the problem is (although you may wish to tell us) BUT you do need to say in the message that they are sick. This is a Ministry of Education requirement and they have changed the way we code absences and if you do not give a reason we have to record the absence as unjustified. If you do not let us know your child is absent they are coded as TRUANT. As these computer records follow the children right through school we want to make sure we are as accurate as possible with our records. MEDICINES We accept sometimes it is necessary to give medication to your child at school. South Hornby School cannot guarantee that the medication will be administered at a precise time i.e. we will take all care but cannot take responsibility. If your child requires medication all medicine is to be held in the office (not the classroom/or your child’s school bag) and must be accompanied by a written note. Children requiring medicine on a regular basis (i.e. inhalers) an ”Authorisation to administer medication form” must be filled out and will be held at the office. SIGN OUT BOOK Please remember you are required to sign the sheet in the school office if you take your child out of the school grounds during school hours. We need to be able to account for every child during school hours. ADVERTISEMENT IFG is an action packed weekly programme for girls in school year 4-6 where we earn badges by doing crafts, playing games, completing challenges and learning exciting facts and information. IFG is a great way to grow in character and self esteem! There is a subscription cost of $35 per term, or you can subscribe for the year for $140. There is also a one-off uniform cost. The programme is run by a local church who approve and police vet all leaders. For more information please go to http://www.hopechurch.net.nz/blog/event/ifg/ or call Rob Key on 980 2296.
