The Magic Wand Tool The Magic Wand tool selects areas in an image with colors that match the area you select with the tool. The tool will select all pixels with a similar color, hue, brightness or opacity based on the area you click in the image.

Magic Wand Tool Options: Tolerance - refers to the range of colors the tool selects when you click to make your selection; the higher the tolerance number the greater the color range selected will be from the original match. Anti-Alias - when selected it will soften the border of the selection area.

Contiguous - when selected causes only contiguous or touching pixels to be selected. When the box is not checked all pixels, whether touching or not, that fit the tolerance range will be part of the selection. Sample All Layers - when checked the selection will be made up of all matching pixels in all layers in the project.

Using the Magic Wand Tool: (1) Select the Magic Wand from the Toolbar and adjust the settings in the Tool Options Bar to get the desired selection effect. (2) Left-click with the mouse on the pixels you want to be selected in the image.

To refine the selection, use the Magic Wand selection tools on the Tool Options Bar to add or remove pixels in the selection. Shortcut: Hold the Shift Key to add pixels to the selection.

Quick Selection Tool The Quick Selection Tool is similar to the Magic Wand in that both tools work through choosing pixels in an image by color and tone. The Quick Selection Tool goes beyond this feature by also referencing similar texture pixels within an image. This makes it ideal for detecting edges making it more accurate then the Magic Wand. In addition the Quick Selection Tools work more like a brush allowing you to paint over the area you want to select, rather than just clicking.

(3) Left-click/Hold and paint with the Quick Select pen over the area you want to select in the image. (4) Use the Add/Subtract settings in the Tool Options to adjust the selection.

Inversing Selections and Applying Effects Inversing Selections can help you quickly select the opposite area of the current selection. To inverse a selection, choose (1) Select > Inverse from the Photoshop Menu. (2) Notice that the selection has moved from around the flower to opposite image area.

You can apply an effect just to a selection area, for example Black & White. With the area selected choose (1) Image > Adjustments > Black & White from the Photoshop menu. (2) Use the sliders to adjust the effect and (3) select OK. Notice that only the selected area around the flower was effected by the adjustment and turned Black & White. Note: For non-destructive editing, use Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Black & White instead of Image adjustments. This will preserve your original image (in full color) as a separate layer.

Layering Selections Layering selections over other parts of the project can create a nice 3D like effect. In this project we want the tower of the Parliament building to appear over the red rectangle graphic that was added to this image. Using our knowledge of selections and layering this will be an easy fix.

Step One: In the Layers Pane on the right (1) deselect the "eye" next to the rectangle layer, to hide this layer; making it easier to see and select pieces of the tower.

Step Two: Select the (1) Magic Wand from the Toolbar.

Step Three: Using the (1) Magic Wand left-hand click and select the blue sky. Remember to use the (2) Tool Options Bar to adjust the Tolerance settings (in this example 50) to make the best selection possible. (3) Un-check Contiguous option so all the sky is captured. Use the (4) Selection State options to add/subtract from the selection.

Step Seven: From the Layers Pane on the right (1) click the "box" next to the rectangle layer to reveal "eye"; making the rectangle layer visible. (2) Left-hand click/hold, drag and drop the new building layer over the rectangle layer. This reorders the new building layer over the rectangle layer.
