The Marquee Tools The Marquee Tools allow you to select a specific shape area within a photo. The Marquee Tools include a Rectangle Marquee, Elliptical Marquee, Single Row (1-pixel length wide) Marquee, and Single Column (1-pixel length high) Marquee. Using Marquees: To use a marquee, (1) select the type from the Toolbar and (2) left-click and drag over the desired area to be selected in the image. (3) A selection is marked by a dashed, blinking border. To reposition a marquee use the keyboard arrow keys or left-click and drag the selection while the Marquee Tool is active. To deselect a marquee, right-click and choose Deselect from the menu. You can apply additional marquees and adjust specific options, as needed, to create effects with the selection.

Tips for Using Marquees: To constrain a rectangular of elliptical marquee to an exact square or circle, press and hold the Shift key while dragging the selection on the image. To draw a marquee from the center, instead of the corner, hold down the Alt key (or Option key for Mac).
Marquee Options The Tool Options bar displays the options for the marquee tool selected. Each marquee has different options, but all of the marquees have the following (1) selection states (represented by the four icons on the left of the Tool Options bar): New Selection - creates a single selection by clicking and dragging on the image in the workspace. Note: This is the default state.
(2) Add to Selection - lets you add another selection area to an existing selection OR create multiple selection areas. If one selection overlaps the other they are combined into one. (3) Subtract Selection - subtracts the selection marquee you draw from any existing selection marquee.

Editing Selections with Marquees Moving selections - Activate the (1) Move Tool from the Toolbar and drag the contents of a selection to another position.
