We won! Vantage Point is proud to announce the Community College of Qatar has officially finished in first place in Aspetar’s “Step Into Health” competition.CCQ’s West Bay Campus finished in first place and its C-ring campus took third. Congratulations to all of those who participated. Each step recorded earned us this win. In addition, to honor our first place finish, participants from each campus were randomly chosen to receive gifts from Aspetar, including IPADS, GO SPORT Gift Vouchers, and/or vouchers to KATARA. All other participants who averaged 10,000 steps or more will also be receiving gifts from SIH. SIH Leaders Alfreda Haggard and BJ Jumnadass will contact individual winners. To commemorate this accomplishment, a celebration dinner was held on March 5th at the Torch Hotel. Dr. Nesreen Al Hashimi, Dean Cheryl Johnson, BJ Jumandass, Alfreda Haggard, two CCQ students and selected staff were at hand to celebrate the victory.

Welcome to the second edition of Al-Mujtama’a (Community). Welcome to the second edition of AlMujtama’a. I would like to start off by thanking Planet News Business, Dr. Ibrahim Al Naimi, Dr. Abdulnassir Tamimi, Gregory Twidal and our sponsor QAPCO for their support, dedication and vision. The first edition of AlMujtama’a was a learning curve and we received positive feedback from our faculty, students and staff. We are pleased that our readers enjoyed the 1st edition. In this issue, we will share with you some new happenings, signings and our first ever inter-university competition with Aspetar and the Step Into Health Program. We hope that you will enjoy this issue. As always, we are looking for writers to assist us in the upcoming issues.

Her Excellency Sheikha Hind Bint Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani, daughter of His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Qatar’s former Emir, made her first visit to the Community College of Qatar, C-Ring campus on Sunday, February 16th, 2014. The Vice President of the Supreme Education Council was greeted by CCQ President Dr. Ibrahim Al-Naimi and welcomed by members of CCQ’s Board of Trustees; Dr. Latifa Al Houti (BOT Chairperson), and BOT members: Dr. Khalid Al Horr, Dr. Huda Buslama, Dr. Ahmad Hasnah, Mr. Arhma Al Kabbi, and Mr. Ismail Al Saeed. After a private reception, HE Sheikha Hind toured the extensive facilities of CCQ’s C-Ring campus meeting with the Deans and instructors, and discussing different areas of instruction including the new Arabic Track, CCQ’s Islamic Studies program, English, ELC, and CCQ’s Instructional Technology.

HE Sheikha Hind concluded her visit by meeting with Dr. Ibrahim and the Board of Trustees in the President’s Conference Room to discuss the future of the college and other matters of importance. In attendance of this meeting was also Salma Al-Shammari, a CCQ Alumni and now, a student at Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s Texas A&M-Qatar extension. Presenting before Her Excellency, Salma spoke openly of her own success having joined and graduated from CCQ. During her speech Salma, pressed the need for Qatari students to embrace the education and skills they can ascertain while enrolled at CCQ. Her Excellency Sheikha Hind has indicated her interest in attending the upcoming CCQ graduation in May 2014. All information was provided by Ms. Muna Nour, Secretary to CCQ’s Board of Trustees.

Arabic Track of Courses This spring CCQ expanded its Arabic Track of courses. Starting in Fall 2013, CCQ offered its first courses taught in Arabic, ARAB 1301, Arabic, and ISLA 1301, Islamic Culture. These courses were taught by our first full-time faculty members in Arabic, Dr. Abedlhay El Sayed Mohammed Elsayed and Dr. Salman Najm Hussein Aldhfeiry.

CCQ has vastly expanded the offerings to include other courses never before taught at CCQ, including HIST 1305, the History of Qatar, and LAWC 1301, Introduction to Law. Additionally, CCQ is offering courses in Arabic that have also been taught in English, such as Mass Communications, Accounting, and other business and management courses.

Last summer, Dr. Ibrahim Al Naimi established the Arabic Track committee of bilingual faculty and staff, chaired by Dr. Jamal Hajo, Professor of Business. This committee developed initial plans for the program. Starting last fall, Dr. Robert G. Ford, Associate Dean of Instruction, announced the expansion of the program to students. Working with the instructional chairs who would be offering courses in the program, Dr. John Moretta of Humanities, Mr. Edward Feighny of

Foreign Languages, and Mr. Tracey Crowe of Business, the group interviewed prospective faculty, gathered materials, and determined practical steps to implement the program. With the appointment of Professor Rolam Salam, Mathematics, as Coordinator of the Arabic track, the Division of Instruction is gearing up even more to determine student interest and program need as this program is expanded. “I am very excited to be part of developing the Arabic track at CCQ,” says Dr. Ford. “Those who came to CCQ in 2010 were able to help develop a college from the ground; we now have a similar opportunity to expand the college. That we are finally offering the History of Qatar, in Qatar, is a sign of just how important this program will be.” by Dr. Ford

Deepening the partnership between the Community College of Qatar and the University of Calgary –Qatar (UC-Q), representatives of both have begun a thirteen week long program geared towards teaching young medical professionals how to address health concerns within the community.

The key learning objective for this course will be for students to gain a broader perspective regarding community health nursing, particularly in the areas of health promotion, capacity building, and intersectional collaboration. The students will be developing a community health project centered on a health need that

has yet to be identified from the specific community. In doing so, these 10 students will then work through the process of assessment, analysis, planning, implementation, and evaluation to determine correct procedures when dealing with a major health concern. In accordance with UC-Q policies, students must complete 96 hours of practice in this course. Before being accepted, each student needs a current C.P.R. Basic Rescuer Certificate and to have completed the required immunizations prior to the beginning of the semester courses. During the

Titled, “Community Health Nursing Clinical Practice” or NURS 533, the course will introduce 10 aspiring UC-Q students and their accompanying instructor to onsite training and practices at the Community College of Qatar every Thursday.

Students will need to demonstrate the ability to move from a consultation role to a collaborative role with clients in responding to any health concerns or issues identified with a select population in the community. Course requirements are very thorough and in order to be successful, each student must receive a “Credit” identifying he or she was capable of

completing all of the tasks outlined. This includes a Midterm and Final Clinical Evaluation, attending seminars, two critical reflections, writing a community health report, and giving an oral presentation on the community health project. Medical Field set to Improve Qatar’s Health Information Management Services The Community College of Qatar (CCQ) is now set to offer a new Associate in Applied Science Degree in Health Information Management. This AAS Degree was developed in collaboration with the Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC), SIDRA, and other medical institutions with the goal of improving Qatar’s medical facilities and logistical proceedings. As the population edges over two million residents, the need for accurate data collection and enforcement of proper medical practices has become more apparent as more is needed from the medical community to address growing health concerns. This two year degree program will address this and focus on providing students the skills and knowledge required to enter into the field of medical and health information management. Students will develop an extensive range of knowledge including proper clinical coding classification techniques, methods to administrating new health record systems, data collection, and business management. Administrators hope the HIM program offered by CCQ will prepare students for a variety of administrative and clinical positions needed in hospitals, healthcare facilities, private clinics, insurance companies, research and development businesses, and various other industries focused on the proper management of health

languages, such coding is necessary for proper international exchange of information. Additionally, information technology will play a key role in managing clinical and patient information systems and the methods needed to efficiently store, retrieve, and use the data collected in meaningful ways. Health care management will be the ultimate goal of the new Associate’s Degree. Individuals with the degree will be responsible for the administration and management of any health information management services provided and will need to ensure all data is accurate, delivered on a timely basis, and that international standards and quality is maintained. and medical facilities. CCQ Celebrates and Competes at Qatar’s National Sports Day

‫انضمت كلية المجتمع في قطر إلى العديد من المنظمات‬ ‫الحي الثقافي كتارا لالحتفال السنوي الثالث باليوم‬ ّ ‫األخرى في‬ .2014 ‫ فبراير‬11 ‫الرياضي في الدولة وذلك يوم الثالثاء‬

The Community College of Qatar joined several other organizations at the Katara Cultural Village on February 11th, 2014, in commemoration of the nation’s third annual Sports Day Celebration.

Qatar Desert Cup The Qatar International Ice Hockey League was created by volunteers who love the game of ice hockey. Most of our players are from Canada and we’ve grown up playing this sport.

The vision for Sports Day is to promote the practice of sport and physical activities on a daily basis. Throughout Katara numerous sporting activities could be participated in and witnessed by spectators. This included outdoor martial arts exhibits, boxing demonstrations, a basketball court, football practice, and numerous water craft activities. CCQ’s own Valorie Gehmen and Bina Bendavides, of the Blue Skies Volley Ball Club, joined others in competing in the beach volleyball tournament. CCQ’s beach football team brought home the biggest prize of the day, coming in second in the day’s tournament. CCQ’s football team included

CCQ instructors, Charlson Pulikottil, CCQ Drivers Noushad and Sabir, and numerous CCQ students from the West Bay Campus. Coming in second, CCQ was awarded 3,000 Qatar Riyals, which will go towards future events. Ahmad Abdulla Al-Kuwari, who played football, recounts the day’s activities. “It was a nice day. They served food, offered many gifts. It was nice to see everyone outside of CCQ.” Dr. Shetha Al-Numan, the new Deputy Associate Dean for Student Services planned the event.

Ice hockey is one of Canada’s national sports along with lacrosse. In the past six years I’ve been a player, volunteer, captain and most recently a committee member of the league. Every year there are local and international tournaments held in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Al-Ain and most recently Bahrain. These tournaments have attracted teams from all over the world and have been supported and sponsored for many years. Qatar has now stepped up and is recognized by the other Gulf countries as a competitor. This year the Desert Cup proves to be the biggest competition in ice hockey ever held in the State of Qatar. This year we have 12 teams competing with two divisions. Division B will consist of 6 teams: Qatar Qanucks, CNAQ Breakers, Dubai Camels, Kuwait IHC, Dhahran Saad Falcons and GCC Aeros. Division C will also have 6 teams consisting of Qatar, Bahrain and Oman. In addition, to this year’s tournament we will have the Qatar National team playing in its first ever competition in Qatar. Currently, we are working together with the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC), the Qatar Winter Sports Committee (QWSC) and sponsors CNAQ and Top House to promote the sport of ice hockey in this region. Our goal is to increase community involvement and develop the sport of ice hockey in Qatar. This year’s tournament was held at Villagio Mall between the dates of February 27th – March 1st. Yvonne Eaton a presenter at the conference stated, “The event was a huge

success. There were approximately 150 people in attendance. All sessions were full. It was great to see what other colleagues and researchers in the humanities field. It was intellectually stimulating.” Dr. Moain Sadey, Assistant Professor of History for Qatar University, noted “This is a very good opportunity to bridge the different institutions in Qatar, such as QU and CCQ. We can build personal and professional relationships, and plan for the future.” CCQ Humanities Instructor Scott Gehman, who planned the previous year’s event, concurred with Dr. Sadey’s statement. “The wonderful thing here is there are a variety of topics to choose from. From presentations on Arabic’s future to the business trade between China and the US, there are

many different ideas for people to discuss,” noted Gehman. Special guests included Dr. Ibrahim Al-Naimi, the President of CCQ, Dr. Sheikha Abdulla Al-Misnad, the President of Qatar University, and Dr. Mohammed Yousef Al-Mulla, Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer for QAPCO, one of the Middle East’s leading producer of ethylene products and CCQ sponsor. The keynote speakers for this event were Dr. Anna Solder, Assistant Professor of Architecture and Urban Planning for Qatar University and Dr. William Vendley, Director for the Security Council on Religions for World Peace. A Case for the Community College in the Developing GCC

‫حالة كلية المجتمع في دول مجلس التعاون‬ ‫الخليجي النامية في الشرق األوسط‬

As we enter into the 21st century, geography will no longer be a barrier for those wishing to access an education greater than what is available, but will the nation accept the premise that an education earned online can be equivalent to or better (than) one that is earned in a classroom?

Despite being vulnerable to the same stigmas attached to equivalent institutions residing in the West, the Community College platform can play an important role in the developing Gulf Countries of the Middle East as formidable choices for post secondary education; if given the chance. Speaking specifically of Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, these countries, residing in the GCC, share similar cultural identities which emphasize the need for educational reform and infrastructural independence. Building on combining long held traditions with growing global ambitions, countries within the developing GCC are seeking to better establish themselves as part of those leading the way into the 21st century. Thanks to newly developed technologies and the vast sale natural resources, nations relatively young to the world, such as Qatar, are now capable of implementing higher educational institutions quickly to make necessary educational improvements. Yet in order to leap forward, mediums or rather “stepping stones” are often needed to bridge the generational gaps and help individuals rise between plateaus. Hence the need for a middle ground appears. Even for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the oldest member of the GCC, educational developments are still on going. When its borders were finally unified in 1932, Saudi Arabia was the poorest country in the world, relying on limited agricultural and pilgrimage revenues. Not until 1938, when oil was discovered did the Arabian state begin its full scale development, and

even then, attempts made by early colonialists stagnated the Kingdom’s transformation. Now countries such as the Kingdom are implementing University scale institutions to improve the quality and diversity of education. However, the existence of such institutions does not necessarily mean the country with improve overall. As evidence suggests, more education and services is needed, especially as many nationals do not immediately enroll in college after graduating from secondary school.

Early Employment In the developing GCC, alumnae native to the GCC typically enter directly into the workforce after graduation of secondary school. This is due in part to the greater probability that he or she will have employment without the need for an advanced degree in the developing public sector. This is an area perceived to offer better benefits and salary options than the emerging private sector, where a higher degree is often needed and is frequently expat heavy. Keeping with traditions, the newly employed will then be able to marry, begin a family, and develop a better status for themselves in their community. To not and enroll full time in a University instead, would mean this student would have to wait several years before these long held traditions can be ascertained. As such, by not attending college right away, a gap in years is created between the time they graduated from secondary school and the time they begin their tenure as a University student. Such decisions cause future challenges.

Adjustment Period After a period of time many of these young professionals will choose to continue their education at a University level in order to better themselves, seek advancement, or work in an alternative field. As areas within the private and public sector grow so will the need for higher degrees, but success at a University can require a mindset more regularly held by freshmen students and not professionals in their late twenties who have families. Though evidence exists of personal successes, statistically men and women who have spent between four to six years out of school have a more difficult time transitioning back into school, often stating they have “forgotten how to be students.” Many indicate they no longer remember the strategies needed to be successful in school or that they now have too many other responsibilities to focus primarily on one thing than another. To successfully return to school and pass, students often face major challenges, but fortunately this is where the advantages of a Community College come into play. Firstly, instead of using standardized tests such as the SAT or ACT test, Community Colleges use placement exams to determine a student’s skill level prior to enrollment. Unlike standardized tests, which require advance preparation, time, and planning, placement exams test a person’s skill level at the time of enrollment. This works in the student’s favor. Scores of a placement test do not typically in any specific way prevent a student from enrolling, but rather specify which classes he or she should take

in order to improve their skill level progressively. Seldom are students not accepted but rather waitlisted, due to limited space. After enrollment, this person may already have employment or family matters to contend with, and will probably not have the time, energy, and attentiveness available to go to school full-time, making a part time viable more valuable. Community Colleges are consistent with the idea that a student can earn an education whether they are a parent, a professional, or both. Organization is often the key to success. Should a student enroll and maintain focus, he or she will eventually graduate from their Community College within an average of two to three years, shorter than they would in a University setting. While the graduate would not receive a bachelor’s degree, he or she would receive an Associate’s degree, which can be supportive evidence enough for a promotion, acceptance into a new field of work, or reception into a new University. Though some GCC universities still require SAT and ACT scores for enrollment even with an Associate’s degree, Community College graduates will on average score better on a standardized test. Additionally, credit for courses completed in the former can transfer to the latter meaning that the student would only need two more years of schooling before he or she could graduate with a bachelor’s degree. Community Colleges already exist in each of the six Gulf Cooperation Council countries but more are needed. by Gregory Twidal
