Service Learning Courses D-1, Statement of Instructional Philosophy Academic and Campus Affairs Council
Value Statement The Austin Community College District recognizes that service learning is centered on meaningful community action and intentional reflection practices for learners while also contributing to sustainable and effective campus-community collaboration. Definition: Service learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates instruction and reflection with meaningful community service to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen local communities. Students become active contributing citizens, apply classroom learning to local community needs, and serve the community in which they live. Administrative Rule All service-learning courses will: 1. Be of college-level rigor and reflect learning outcomes approved by the faculty in the discipline. 2. Be in the approved course inventory and offered as described in the college catalog. 3. Meet all applicable regulations as established by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS-COC), the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB), and any other applicable regulatory agencies. 4. Be planned and structured by the appropriate academic unit(s) of the College in cooperation with the Office of Service Learning and Civic Engagement. 5. Incorporate course learning outcomes and service learning activities that students are required to demonstrate in order to successfully complete the course.
