GETTING STARTED-TIPS FOR ATHLETES First, we’d like to note that in Achilles parlance, running means many things. It means conventional running, of course. But it also refers to walking, wheeling, hopping, or swinging through on crutches. In other words, any form of locomotion that you use to move along the route! The most important item is a good pair of sneakers! Wear loose, comfortable clothing that’s suitable to the weather. During group workouts or on race day, wear your Achilles CT t-shirt with pride! Remember, speed is not important. Some Achilles athletes move slowly, others are very fast. Our goal is to help you build strength and confidence in your ability, and to have fun doing it. Don’t be concerned if you’re a novice runner, or out of shape. You will notice improvements quickly. Avoiding injury while running or racing is critical, and it’s equally important to enjoy yourself while you run. Here are some tips to help you: •

Start with a good pair of running shoes to properly support your feet.

Get socks specifically made for running. Cotton socks can chafe and lead to blisters.

Race day is not the time to try out new shoes or new clothing.

Use a lubricant, like Vaseline or Body Glide, to keep socks and clothing from rubbing and chafing.

Do not compare yourself to others. Run for yourself, and set your own goals.

Hydrate. Make sure you drink water throughout the day.

To feel your best after a run, make sure you eat and drink in the hours immediately after your run.

Do not run two hard days back-to-back.

A package of frozen peas makes a great icepack for aches and pains!

For races longer than 5k, start out slower than you think you should.

It’s OK to take walk breaks. There is absolutely no shame in walking…even the great runners of our time walk!

Progress comes in fits and starts, but it comes. There will be some tough days, but there will also be great days. Focus on the great ones!

Workouts One goal of each workout is to provide a meaningful aerobic experience. We want your heart rate to increase during exercise, which will improve the efficiency of your cardiovascular system. The result will be increased energy, sounder sleep, and a faster metabolism. Before a workout or race, spend a few minutes warming up with a series of dynamic stretches to loosen tight muscles and get the blood flowing. When your muscles are relaxed, you’re less likely to encounter injuries or strains. You are encouraged to participate at whatever level of running, walking, or rolling that is comfortable and appropriate to your ability. Our goal is for you to build strength and endurance so that you can run at least 20 minutes without stopping. We have experienced runners who serve as guides and will assist you and answer questions. We encourage you to work out more than once a week in order to build endurance and develop a comfortable running style. This may sound daunting at first, but you’ll soon find the rewards of time spent working out with friends. Races Participating in a race is a goal for many beginning athletes. In addition to the fun and excitement of the race experience, athletes experience a great sense of personal achievement. If you are just starting out, choose a short race, such as a 5K (3.1 miles). Planning ahead is essential. Give yourself plenty of time to train, and set realistic goals. For some, this may mean finishing under a particular time. For many, completion is a sufficient goal. Some Achilles athletes make the decision to run a marathon. This takes a much larger commitment of time and effort, but is extremely rewarding. Nerves are common before a race. Even the best athletes suffer from them and secondguess their ability to complete the race. Remember to start slow and wait until you’ve hit a comfortable stride before you pick up speed. The experience of participating in a race should be an enjoyable one, and the most valuable reward you’ll get for crossing the finish line is a sense of accomplishment and confidence!

ACHILLES CT CHAPTER-ATHLETE GUIDELINES & AGREEMENT Achilles CT Chapter Mission Our mission is to enable people with all types of disabilities to participate in mainstream athletics in order to promote personal achievement, enhance self-esteem, and lower barriers to living a fulfilling life. Sportsmanship An important mission of our athletics program is to teach and reinforce values relating to sportsmanship, competition, and fair play. It is expected that athletes, guides/volunteers, and spectators respect this mission by exhibiting appropriate behavior at Achilles workouts and events. Unsportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated and is subject to your Achilles membership being revoked. Athlete Eligibility Requirements Athletes must meet the following requirements to be eligible to participate: 1.

Athletes must have a diagnosed physical, developmental, or emotional disability and/or medical condition (including but not limited to paralysis, spina bifida, limb amputation, stroke, TBI, visual impairment, hearing impairment, joint replacement, rheumatoid arthritis, autism, Down’s Syndrome, depression, PTSD, cancer, multiple sclerosis, lupus, etc.)

2.

Athletes must be registered with Achilles International Connecticut Chapter, completing the application form and signing the liability waiver. Membership is renewed and information updated annually.

3.

All participants are required to have a physician’s medical clearance. You may be asked to show proof of a physical or provide a doctor’s note.

4.

Athletes under the age of 18 must have parent or guardian consent. Parents and/or guardians must be present at Achilles events at all times.

Athlete Participation 1.

The Achilles CT Chapter selects certain races each year and covers registration fees for those events through fundraising, grants, and/or sponsorships. The Chapter Leadership Team works behind the scenes with race directors and selects the races based on accommodations (e.g. early start times, awards for athletes with disabilities), course safety, and inclusion for all disabilities to safely participate. In addition, we coordinate guide pairings with athletes and have a large presence at the event (e.g. Team tent, additional race day volunteers, etc.) A list of these ‘Team Achilles CT’ events are provided to each athlete at the beginning of the year, and are posted on the Achilles CT website.

2.

Athletes who wish to participate in an Achilles CT Chapter sponsored race must confirm their participation and needs (e.g. guide(s), transportation, etc.) to the Membership Coordinator at least 12 weeks in advance of the event to allow for proper training and planning. Typically, athletes will be given a special team code from the race director to register without being charged a fee. Please consult with the Membership Coordinator to receive the registration code before beginning the process. *In the event that you register on your own in advance of using a code, you will be reimbursed after the race.

3.

If needed, we expect athletes to arrange their own transportation to a workout, race or other event using their network of local family and friends FIRST. Otherwise, it is the responsibility of the athlete to contact the Membership Coordinator at least 2 weeks prior to the workout, race or event for assistance.

4.

If an athlete wishes to enter a race NOT organized and sponsored by the CT Chapter, the athlete must register and pay on their own and contact the race director at least 6 weeks in advance if accommodations are needed. It is IMPERATIVE that communication with the race director occurs in advance to discuss the type of disability (for placement in the correct division), course terrain, need for guide support, and share previous racing experience. Achilles CT can help match athletes with a guide if needed for these races, but again with at least 6 weeks notice. Note: As these are not races in which Achilles CT organizes and/or has multiple athletes/guides participating, registration discounts or the waiver of fees may not be applicable, nor should be expected or assumed.

5.

In the event that an athlete who is registered for an Achilles-sponsored race (and registration has been paid) CANNOT or DOES NOT participate, it is the responsibility of the athlete to reimburse the Chapter if a refund cannot be issued (this applies to both Achilles CT Chapter and Achilles International events).

6.

If an athlete registers for and pays for a race on their own and cannot participate, the athlete must adhere to the refund or deferral policies per the specific event organizer.

7.

If financial assistance is needed in order to participate in a non-Achilles CT sponsored race, the athlete must contact the Chapter Treasurer six weeks in advance of the race by completing the funding request form (see attached). Each funding request will be reviewed by the Chapter Leadership team and be kept in strict confidence. Note: submitting a request does not automatically guarantee financial aid will be granted. Each request is reviewed individually by the Chapter Executive Board.

8.

Athletes will communicate their need for guide support and transportation to the Membership Coordinator in order to be safe and successful at workouts and in races. Athletes will be assigned a guide based on factors such as pace, location, gender preference, etc. Athletes will be expected to communicate with their assigned guides prior to workouts and /or races via phone and/or email. These guidelines apply to BOTH Chapter sponsored and non-sponsored events.

9.

It is the responsibility of each athlete to understand each race’s policies and procedures, course terrain, and other event specific information before the event.

10.

Equipment: The Achilles CT Chapter has a tandem bicycle and three hand cycles to loan out to athletes who do not have their own equipment. You must have a way to transport and securely store the equipment. Please contact the Chapter President for more information and to complete required paperwork.

11.

If financial assistance is needed to maintain racing equipment, the athlete must contact the Chapter Treasurer six weeks in advance of the race by completing the funding request form (see attached). Each funding request will be reviewed by the Chapter Leadership team and be kept in strict confidence. Note: submitting a request does not automatically guarantee financial aid will be granted. Each request is reviewed individually.

12.

To be considered for bigger races with Achilles International, such as the Boston and/or NYC Marathons, interested athletes must be an active member of Achilles CT Chapter for at least one year, participate in at least 2 Achilles CT events per year, and adhere to deadlines, guidelines and applications for these specific races. Policies and procedures for these events are set by BAA, NYRR, and Achilles International and NOT by individual Achilles Chapters (e.g. Achilles CT). Note: Additional expenses such as registration, travel/transportation, lodging, etc. are the athlete’s responsibility unless communicated in advance to the athlete by Achilles International. On average, out of pocket expenses for these races can range between $300-$500. Athletes who are members of Achilles CT

ASK NOT WHAT YOUR CHAPTER CAN DO FOR YOU, ASK WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR CHAPTER! With the exception of the Chapter Leader, Achilles CT is entirely run by a team of dedicated and talented volunteers! The money that we spend on races and other events comes from our own fundraising efforts! Whether you are an athlete, guide, volunteer, or past donor, this is OUR CHAPTER and we can all contribute in some way to make it even better! Here are some ways in which you can make a difference: -HELP US FUNDRAISE TO COVER ATHLETE EXPENSES Training to race a big event such as the Boston or NYC Marathon? Training for your first-ever race as an Achilles athlete (any distance)? Please consider fundraising for Team Achilles CT! Many of our athletes and guides have raised thousands of dollars for Achilles CT….those funds help Team Achilles CT athletes get to the starting lines. Please consider paying it forward…even if you can’t make a personal contribution, your family, friends and contacts who support you can help make a difference in your honor! Please contact the Chapter President [email protected] for more information and to help set up your personal fundraising page.
