Fire Mangers Gather Intelligence to Plan Suppression Efforts Sunday, August 13, 2017, 11:00 a.m. Jolly Mountain Fire Information Phone Number (505) 303-0057 Location: Cle Elum Ranger District of the Okanogan-Wenatchee NF, 13 miles northwest of Cle Elum, WA Start Date: August 11, 2017 Cause: Lightning Size: 327 Acres Percent Contained: 0% Vegetation: Timber between rock stringers and ridge tops Resources Assigned: 70 personnel Incident Commander: Alan Sinclair with the Southwest Area Type 2 Incident Management Team 3 Summary: Rain late Sunday night slowed spread on the five fires that make up the Jolly Mountain Fire. They are burning in a remote area approximately five miles northwest of the north end of Cle Elum Lake. Steep slopes, rugged terrain and the distance from road systems limit access to the fires. The potential complexity of the fires instituted a change from the local Type 3 Incident Management Team to a Type 2 Team. Type 2 Teams contain additional specialists and are capable of dealing with larger, more complicated incidents. The two Teams transitioned and the Southwest Area Type 2 Team assumed command this morning at 6:00 am. Incident Commander Alan Sinclair emphasized at a briefing on Sunday “Consideration for public and firefighter safety will be at the forefront of all decision making on this incident, today we will focus on determining other values at risk and the mitigation measures needed to protect them.” The fires received approximately .10 inch of precipitation overnight as a cold front moved through the area. Temperatures will be cooler on Sunday than during the previous week and much of the Canadian smoke has cleared out of the area. Forecasted winds will blow from the northwest for the next few days setting up the potential for the fire to move southeast. Today, crews will continue to scout locations where they will have a high probability of success in engaging the fire. Additional resources will be arriving throughout the day at the Incident Command Post which I located at the Cle Elum-Roslyn High School. Closure: A number of trails are signed closed due to fire activity, in the Teanaway drainage these include; Boulder Deroux (#1392), Johnson Medra (#1383), Way Creek (#1235), Jungle Creek (#1383.1), West Fork (#1353), Middle Fork (#1393) and Yellow Hill (#1222). In the Cle Elum Valley they are: Corral Creek (#1340.1), Sasse Mtn. (#1340), Howson Creek (#1349), Jolly Mtn. (#1307, access from Cayuse CG), Paris Creek (#1393) and Boulder Creek (#1392). Fire Restrictions: All campfires are banned on Cle Elum Ranger District, as the resources to handle additional human fires are in short supply.
