Introduction Kurdistan Technical Institute (KTI) formally has decided to change the institute’s educational system to Bologna based on the standards and criteria of Bologna international system with reference to the meeting No (7) issued on 21st of July 2017 by board of trustee. They decided to implement the process in the academic year 2016-2017. For this purpose, a special committee has been formed by Institute’s decree No (324) on 19th of April 2016. The committee has been holding several meeting ever since and forwarding the minutes to the Institute’s council to decide on its items. The special committee of the institute has visited the ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research of KRG and Human Development University to familiarize with the process and discuss the steps into this process and the procedures needed. Several workshops have been held by Institute’s Bologna committee and foreign and local experts on entering to the process. In addition, coordination is made with University of Technology, Malaysia (UTM) and the committee has visited Human Development University to benefit from the experiences of this university. However, the majority of teaching staff of our institute graduated from universities abroad especially from Britain, Europe, Malaysia, and Turkey which they used this system. After discussions and studying all the results, proposals, all attempts and activities mentioned above, the institute eventually decided to implement the process in all its departments (Business Administration, Computer Science, Information Technology, and Petroleum Refining & Drilling) in the academic year (20162017).

The Aim of the Bologna Process Kurdistan Technical Institute always works hard to be a leading institute and make differences in educational system to fit the changes in the world and provide the needs of labor market. It also works hard to modernize academic programs and promote long life learning concept, and ensure the process of quality assurance and modern education programs. Our institute always aspires to make its education in a way that is suitable with contemporary learning and make a student center of learning. Hence, formally it accepted the implementation of Bologna process.

Studying duration is all the days that are formally put by the institute as the start and end of the semester. It consists of teaching time, exam time, homework study time, reading time at library, project doing time, presenting seminars, and participating in seminars. Each semester consists of 13 to 16 weeks.

European Credit Transfer System(ECTS): 1. For obtaining technical diploma degree, a student should take and complete 120 credits. The duration is 4 semesters. Each semester consists of 30 credits. In any circumstances, a student cannot take more than 42 credits in a semester. 2. Number of modules in each semester should not be less than 4 and more than 6 modules. 3. Except for general modules, number of credits of each module should not be less than 5 and more than 10 credits. 4. Class room hours in a week should not be less than 10 and more than 20 hours. 5. Number of working hours for achieving 1 credit is 25 hours. 6. Each department decides upon its own modules in two forms (required and selective). When a student takes it, they must study and pass them. the optional ones can be changed according to the needs of the departments, but the essential ones are implemented in the first step. 7. Generally, duration of study in this semester is open. This means a students is not obliged to complete his/her study in one and a half year. But the departments can make limitations according to their scientific procedures. Each student should complete the semester ib two attempts now otherwise he/she will be considered as fail and cannot get certificate. For this, we will ask the ministry to say their opinions. Mark Divisions: • 30% - 60% will be on the final exam of the semester. If a lecturer does not want to do the semester exam, he/she can ask the scientific department can accept it, but the statistics should be done before the teaching of this module. • 40% -70% will be on activities, quizzes, and assessments that the lecturer would ask the students to do during the semester. • For each of these, a document should be provided by the students and the documents should be available and stored until November the next year.

After that, the 2 best documents, the medium, and the worst will be archived in the department. • Overall mark should not exceed 100 marks. Passing Criteria: A student is considered pass in each semester in the following cases: 1. If a student’s total average in each module is equal or more than %50 of the total assessments. 2. A student can load 12 credits to the next semester. 3. A student cannot get a certificate if he/she does not get the required credits which are 120 credits. 4. If a student fails in a semester, the scientific department can allow him/her to pass to the next semester on condition that he/she will study the failed credits again (if the institute has these modules), and if there is more than that, the scientific department can ask a student to study another module instead of failed credits, but semester credit should be considered. 5. If a student fails in a module, he/she can study another module instead of the failed one on condition that the modules have the same credit and accepted by the scientific department. 6. Cases, grade decisions, case changes and case ease will continue because the ministry has not agreed to implement the mechanism of bologna. Pass is 50% for each module. 7. Loading a module will continue based on instructions and decisions of MHE KRG.

Quality Assurance Process: Directorate of quality assurance monitors the quality of the institute according to the demands available in Bologna process. It opens course for lecturers before going to the classes for all departments in the institute. Protecting the archive of this process and follow up are duties of its directorate. It tries to align with bologna under the guidance of Ministry of higher education and scientific affairs to gain international accreditation for the institute.

Auditing Process: In the institute, there should be a committee to supervise the bologna process in many ways including dividing the units on the subjects, dividing the marks of a module, assessment documents, objectives of a module, exam questions and results, etc. and all other things relating to bologna process. This institution should be informed if this job is directed to quality assurance, then we suggest reorganizing our directorate as following: Directorate of Quality Assurance Coordinator of QA Coordinator of Bologna Process

Coordinator of QA & Scientific Development

Each of these coordinators should be assisted by a lecturer at the department. Each should have 4 hours in a week at least to follow up the success of the process.
