(common to Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Production Engineering, ) Time: 3 hours Max.Marks:70 Answer any FIVE questions All questions carry equal marks --1.a) Explain the star-delta transformation. b) Using mesh analysis, find the currents in all the branches of the network given below.

Explain Lenz’s law and Faraday’s law of magnetic induction. An iron ring 15cm in diameter and 10cm2 in cross section is wound with 200 turns of wire. Find the exciting current when there is a 2mm air-gap. Assume B = 1Wb/m2 and permeability of 500.

3.a) b)

Define average and rms values of alternating quantities. A symmetrical triangular voltage wave with a peak amplitude of 100V and a frequency of 50kHz is applied across a 0.02  capacitor. Find the rms value of the current flowing in the capacitor.

4.a)

Derive the relations between line and phase currents of 3, delta connected system and hence deduce the expression for power in a balanced 3 system. Two coils have self inductances of 0.1 and 0.2H and a coupling coefficients of 0.35. What current will flow when the coils are joined in series a cross a 50Hz, 125V circuit?

5.a) b)

Derive an expression for the induced emf in a dc generator. A 100kW belt driven shunt generator running at 300rpm on 220V bus bars continues to run as a motor when the belt breaks, then taking 10kW. What will be its speed? Take Ra = 0.025, RF = 60, contact drop under each brush = 1V. Contd…..2.

b) 7.a) b)

Explain how the efficiency of a transformer is predicted by conducting O.C. and S.C. tests. Explain the principle of operation of 3 induction motor. Explain how the regulation of an alternator is determined using synchronous impedance method. A 550V, 55KVA, 1 alternator has an effective resistance of 0.2. A field current of 10A produces an armature current of 200A on short circuit and an emf of 450V on open circuit. Calculate. (i) the synchronous impedance (ii) full load regulation with power factor of a 0.8 lagging. Write short notes on the following: a) Critical field resistance. b) Resonance in electrical circuits. c) Induction type energy motor.
