Above are the relay split times (in seconds) for the womens 4x400m team for the last five races.

1)

Compare each athlete’s times by calculating the mean and range of their times.

2)

Who is the most consistent runner? Explain your answer.

3)

The Olympic committee want to select one of the athletes for the womens 400m race. Who should they use? How did you decide this?

Nelson Evora

Philips Idowu

Triple Jump

Below are the 5 jumps recorded for each athlete in a competition: 17.03m 17.37m 17.87m 17.52m 17.96m

17.21m 17.27m 17.75m 17.85m 17.52m

1)

Which athlete has the longest mean jump?

2)

Calculate the range and explain which athlete is the most consistent triple jumper.

3)

The competition went into a 6th round where Idowu jumped 17.73m and Evora jumped 18.30m. Does this have any effect on the mean distances jumped and consistency of each athlete? Show your calculations.

Answers 800m Freestyle Before: Median: 163, 165, 175, 178, 185, 188, 195, 196, 200

Range = 37

After: Median: 132, 146, 148, 152, 155, 168, 183, 189, 192

Range = 60

The training has reduced her pulse rate however it is less consistent now.

4x400m Relay 1)

Shana: Mean=51.94s, Range=0.79s. Christine: Mean=51.48s, Range=0.81. Nicola: Mean=51.97s, Range=1.51s. Perri: Mean=51.52, Range=0.11.

2)

Perri is the most consistent.

3)

Some may say Christine as she is the fastest. Some may say Perri as she is very close to the fastest mean time and is the most consistent. Whereas Christine is not as consistent.

Triple Jump 1)

Idowu mean = 17.55, Evora mean = 17.52m. Idowu has the longest mean jump.

2)

Idowu range = 0.93m, Evora range = 0.64m. Evora is the most consistent.

3)

Idowu new mean = 17.58m, Evora new mean = 17.65m. Evora now has the longest mean jump. Idowu new range = 0.93m, Evora new range = 1.09m so Idowu is now the most consistent.
