Re:

Profile Team MATEO

At the meeting of December 20th I would like to share the inspiring initiative that was started by a group of grade 7 students at St. Joseph High School. Originally this group were together at St. Cecilia and they began “Team Mateo” to support a fellow student battling cancer. Olivia Medina, Emmy McGillis, Ava Grimes and Lauren O’Neil wanted to make a difference and show Mateo that he has an army of friends and supporters behind him. This is just one example of the many acts of kindness across our system where students step up to support other students and make a difference. The “Team Mateo” students will be joined by the Principal of St. Cecilia, Andrea Green and Julie Mathe acting Principal of St. Joseph and will be pleased to share their story and answer any questions. Please find attached their slide presentation. Respectfully submitted,

Brenda Wilson, Superintendent BW/kd Ref: Regular board December 20, 2016

Let’s show Mateo that ……… NO ONE FIGHTS ALONE!! 6

Buy a wristband to show your support!

#teamMATEO

#teamMATEO 7

Hello, our names are Emmy, Lauren, Ava and Olivia and we are from St.Joseph's. We are here to talk to you about our #teamMATEO project. So, you have probably heard that Mateo has unfortunately been diagnosed with Lymphoma cancer. He was only able to attend his first day of grade seven at his new school, St.Joseph. Mateo is a really outgoing, funny person if you ask any of his teachers from St.Cecilia they would probably say the same.

The wristbands 8

When we heard that our friend Mateo got diagnosed with Lymphoma we knew we needed to do something. So after some thinking we decided to create wristbands to show Mateo that no one fights alone. The wristbands are blue and yellow because those are Mateo’s two favourite colours. On the front of the wristband it says “#teamMATEO” and on the back it says “NO ONE FIGHTS ALONE” to remind Mateo that we are all in this together and we will support him in whatever he may need!! We sold these wristband during our lunch hour. We were lucky to have such strong community support that Mateo’s former elementary school, St. Cecilia, volunteered to sell them as well.

9

These are the #teamMATEO wristbands.

10

11

Wish jar 12

To show Mateo that we are thinking of him and that he is in our thoughts and prayers we created something called a “Wish Jar”. Both St.Joe’s and St.Cecilia participated in writing messages of prayers or other good wishes to Mateo on colourful slips of paper. After we got all the slips of paper together we gathered them in a decorated jar which we were able to personally deliver to him once he was able to have visitors!

St. Cecilia presentation

13

The Raffle

As another fundraiser for Mateo, we decided to raffle off an Ottawa Senators jersey signed by the entire team! We sold tickets for $1 or 6 tickets for $5. All the money raised will go to #teamMATEO. 14

Thank you! 15

Finally, we would like to thank St. Joseph and St. Cecilia for their help and a special thank you to Mme. Sultan at St.Cecilia for organizing the wristband sales and taking time everyday out of her busy schedule for such a great cause!

Literacy & Basic Skills Custodial Program Video

Along with Literacy & Basic Skills (LBS) Program Coordinator Joyce Nolan and Continuing & Community Education Manager Marianne Kayed, it is my pleasure to present a video about the Custodial Training program the Continuing & Community Education Department offers at St. Nicholas Adult High School (West Campus). The video was created by the Ottawa Community Coalition for Literacy, which is an umbrella organization for the Ottawa regional adult literacy service providers. These providers received funding from the Ministry of Advanced Education & Skills Development to create 3 promotional videos showing literacy programs in our region. Our LBS Custodial Training program was selected for one of these videos. LBS Coordinator Joyce Nolan did much of the legwork coordinating with partners like the Mission and City of Ottawa on this video of our Custodial Training program.

LBS Custodial Training Program Video RECOMMENDATION: THAT the memorandum from the Superintendent of Continuing and Community Education dated November 29, 2016 entitled “Literacy & Basic Skills Custodial Program Video” be received.

OCSB – Associate Teacher Program

Associate Teachers mentor Teacher Candidates to grow and develop professionally through classroom practice. The multi-dimensional role of Associate Teacher is to model successful teaching practices and help the teacher candidate to develop new skills in classroom management, differentiated learning, assessment, and lesson planning. Teacher mentors guide Teacher Candidates to help them extend their critical thinking skills and develop new skills that foster deep learning. This year, 2016-2017, we have 210 Associate Teachers working with Teacher Candidates from Ottawa University, Nipissing University, Potsdam University and Queen’s University. Teacher Candidates are integrated into classrooms and experience all aspects of the school community. Joan Barry, Principal and Grade 1 Teacher Andrea Gillis, from St Rose of Lima Elementary School along with Melissa Mills, Teacher Candidate, will provide an overview and the benefits of this program at the Board meeting on December 20, 2016. RECOMMENDATION: THAT the Memorandum from the Superintendent of Leading and Learning dated December 13, 2016 entitled OCSB – Associate Teacher Program be received.

Re:

St. Patrick’s High School Addition and Alterations

On June 3, 2015 the Board approved the consolidation of St. Patrick’s Intermediate School at the nearby High School subject to the Province funding the cost of an addition to St. Patrick’s HS. In May 2016 the Province provided the Board with a grant of approximately $7.6 million to construct 276 pupil place addition which corresponds to 12 classrooms in size. At the Board Meeting of May 24, 2016 the Board appointed EJ Cuhaci and Associates as Architects for this work. Since May, Planning and Facilities staff have been consulting with the Architects, the Principals at both schools together with specialized staff in the Student Success Department Intermediate to develop a building program for the new addition. Staffs at both schools were consulted in developing the plans. Amongst other expenditures, on November 22, 2016 the Board of Trustees approved the recommended projects to be funded from the annual Facility Renewal grant. Included in these recommendations was $930,000 for work in the existing High School building to replace the obsolete fire alarm system, to make alterations necessary to accommodate the grades 7&8 coming to the high school and to improve program space for high school students and staff. At the meeting we will share the architectural drawings. While these drawings show a considerable amount of detail they are still preliminary and we will continue to flesh out the final form as time proceeds. Our primary objective at this stage is to settle on the building footprint so that we can make an application to the City of Ottawa for Site Plan Approval and to get Ministry of Education approval to proceed.
