Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili officiated an informal dinner in honor of his Turkish counterpart, Binali Yildirim, who visited Batumi for a few hours. The parties emphasized the positive development dynamics in Georgia-Turkey strategic partnership. Special emphasis was placed on preparation for the second meeting of the Turkey-Georgia High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council. Giorgi Kvirikashvili expressed commitment to host the second meeting of the HighLevel Strategic Cooperation Council in Georgia and to dedicate this event to the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The Prime Minister of Georgia delivered a welcome speech at the event dedicated to the presentation of the Georgian Government’s 2017-2020 Strategy for Rural Development. Giorgi Kvirikashvili thanked the EU and the UNDP for their strategic support and emphasized that the use of right approaches can bring about substantial change in the life of the rural population. According to the Prime Minister, important steps have been taken over the past four years to promote agriculture, providing fertile ground for advancing to a new stage in development. A convention center with a 360° view will be built at one of the highest points of the Gudauri cableway, Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili announced his initiative at the Government meeting. According to the Prime Minister’s initiative, the convention center will be built at one of the highest points the cableway can reach. The Prime Minister delegated the identification of a suitable area to the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development and the Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure. The convention center project will be based on European examples successfully operating all year round. According to the Prime Minister, this facility will boost the development of tourism in Gudauri. Should private companies take interest in the project, investment partnership offers will be considered.

Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili met today with Kai Kaarelson, the newly appointed Ambassador of Estonia to Georgia. The parties discussed prospects of deepening Georgia-Estonia relations and the successful cooperation between the two countries in a number of directions. Preliminary Data indicated that the amount of the Direct Foreign Investments in Georgia exceeded 1,6 billion USD (1,645 million), which is 22% higher compared to the preliminary data of 2015 and 5% higher than detailed data of the same year. According to the same preliminary data, the FDI amounted to 330 million USD in the 4th quarter of 2016, which is 23% higher compared to the preliminary data of the 4th quarter of 2015 and 1% higher than detailed data of the same period. “Increased FDI during the recent years is a result of those executed, on-going and scheduled economic and structural reforms initiated by Georgian Government, which have very positive influence on the investors,” – Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Nino Javakhadze stated. According to the Deputy Minister, Georgia achieved the significant progress in the implementation of the democratic reforms, which had positive impacts on the business environment in the country and promoted development of the different economic sectors. “On-going reforms in Georgia, including taxation system and as small and medium business supporting reforms, the visa-liberalization and the free trade agreement with the EU makes Georgia even more attractive investment destination. as follows: 645 million USD were invested in the transport and communication sector, which is the highest amount with 39% of the total foreign direct investment, energy sector is on the second place with 203 million USD (12% of total FDI), while the construction is on the third place with 163 million USD (10%). It should be noted that the increase in the foreign direct investment is caused by the increase of the investments in the real sector. In 2016, significant growth of investments in the manufacturing sector was recorded and reached 79% (53 million USD). Significant growth was also recorded in the energy sector (79 million USD, which is 64% higher compared to the last year), the construction sector (52 million USD, which is 47% higher compared to the last year) and transport and communication sector (60 million USD, which is 10% higher compared to the last year). “Among the countries, which implemented FDI in Georgia, Azerbaijan is on the leading position (578 million USD, which is 35% of total investments). Turkish investments were also increased by 199 million USD and amounted to 272 million USD. United Kingdom comes next with 121 million USD, which is followed by the Netherlands with 95 million USD and Czech Republic with 93 million USD” – Javakhadze said. The Deputy Minister emphasized that the improvement in the doing business and freedom of economic activities in confirmed by Georgia’s positions in the international rankings, which contributes to the country’s future investment attractiveness. According to the Deputy Minister, Georgia’s position in the World Bank’s Doing Business 2017 ranking is improved by 7 positions and now it is at the 16th position among the 190 countries. Georgia has also improved its position in the 2017 Index of Economic Freedom with the 13th position among the 180 countries and the status of “Mostly Free”.
