Along with developing entrepreneurship, we are also determined to position our country in the international arena so as to attract new investments and increase export,” the Prime Minister emphasized. According to Giorgi Kvirikashvili, the Georgian Government is actively working toward diversifying Georgia’s trade markets. Georgia enjoys FTAs with the EU, Turkey, and CIS countries. In the nearest future, similar agreements with the EFTA, China, and Hong Kong will come into force. Currently, Georgia is also probing into prospects of signing an FTA with India. “All this creates immense potential for international and local investors. It is our goal to help investors see and use the exceptional opportunities and business environment in Georgia, this way boosting the export of Georgian products, and we are committed to doubling our efforts to this end. Moreover, several state agencies will join forces to ensure our exporters’ global positioning. Produce in Georgia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Export Promotion Agency will work together to support exporters in exploring and taking root in new markets,” the Prime Minister said. Giorgi Kvirikashvili singled out yet another novelty, the new institution of commercial attaches. The Prime Minister hopes that these envoys of Georgia, so to speak, who will work at Georgia’s embassies in different countries, will actively introduce prospective investors to the opportunities in Georgia. The Prime Minister commented on the performance of the Produce in Georgia state program and discussed its achievements. Since the launch of the program, almost 170 projects have been financed under the industrial component alone, with their total investments amounting to 400 million GEL. Over 100 million GEL have been invested in the program’s agricultural component. Over 20 hospitality sector projects, with investments making up 34 million GEL, have been supported. Investments in the cinema industry exceed seven million GEL. The component for supporting micro and small enterprises deserves special mention in that it has retrained almost 9,000 beneficiaries, provided co-financing to 5,000 beneficiaries, and created over 5,000 new jobs in Georgia’s rural areas. The Produce in Georgia Agency will incorporate three independent brands: Produce in Georgia-Business, Produce in Georgia-Export, and Produce in Georgia-Investment. The Dariali HPP will find its place on the list of Georgia’s tourist destinations, the Prime Minister of Georgia, at the Government meeting, pitched this initiative to the Ministries of Education and Economy. According to Giorgi Kvirikashvili, it is an exciting and unique underground structure that must be open to as many visitors as possible. “Many countries have this practice of showcasing similar hi-tech engineering structures to visitors and students. I want everyone to see this complex task completed in modern Georgia with the participation of our companies. We should be proud of it, and I urge you to make this great achievement available to as many visitors as possible,” the Prime Minister stated. According to Giorgi Kvirikashvili, the 110 MW Dariali HPP is absolutely unique, having earned the name of champion among new projects in Central and Eastern Europe. “It is the finest hydropower project in Central and Eastern Europe. With the participation of the European Bank and international partners, 123 million USD has been invested to build this absolutely unique structure. It is the largest hydropower plant ever built in independent Georgia,” the Prime Minister highlighted.

Up to 100 representatives of the Iranian and Georgian companies participated in the Forum. Giorgi Gakharia considers Iran to be a country in the region with one of the impressive economic potential. “We believe we will receive additional investments from Iran. We discussed specific areas and such fields as the production, transit, pharmaceutics, agriculture, as well as the usage of the Free Trade regimes through establishing joint ventures and so on. These are the directions where we should expect the most of the activities,” - George Gakharia told to the journalists. The Minister noted that the volume of the FDI is quite small due to objective reasons though the share of the Georgian export in the trade in gradually growing. “Representatives of certain companies have arrived and therefore, we believe that we will have some certain results. Unfortunately, due to objective reasons, the amount of the foreign direct investment from Iran is quite small. However, the share of the Georgian export in the trade balance is increasing and of course, we welcome this trend,” - the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development noted.

During the upcoming summer season, the Greek airline Ellinair for the first time launches regular Heraklion-Tbilisi-Heraklion flights and re-launches the Thessaloniki-Tbilisi-Thessaloniki flights. Thessalonica-Tbilisi regular flights will be conducted from May 18 to September 14, twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays, while Tbilisi-Heraklion flights will be available June 15 to September 14 once a week on Thursdays. Flight will be performed using Boeing B737, Airbus A319, Airbus A320 and Avro RJ85 type aircrafts. Civil Aviation Agency of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia granted the relevant permission on conducting the flights to the Ellinair on 13 April. Ellinair entered the Georgian air market in 2015. The airline offers low-cost flights to the Greek resort towns during the season.
