Families can be both embarrassing and hilarious. In some special households, friends are so welcomed that they are seamlessly adopted into the family life. Perhaps we think that the more simple and open our goals, the less success we can achieve. What if the opposite is true? How many of us would be willing to settle when we're young for what we eventually get? Please enjoy our interpretation of this play, an ode to the messy and creative communities that foster wisdom and acceptance.

In the monastery of Maria Morgenstern, life seems to go on quite predictably, even in 1943 Germany. But behind the convent walls, there is an active underground working to hide and transport Jewish children through Germany to the border, even in the face of imminent threats. This story is based on documentary evidence in the testimony of Jews, who as children were saved from death through the efforts of religious women in the convents of Germany and other Nazioccupied countries. While rehearsing this show, our cast has learned so much about the risks and sacrifices of many nuns, priests, and townspeople who chose to defy the Nazi regime and demonstrate love to the Jewish people. We dedicate this play to these nameless women and the good people who worked with them to create a few bright moments in the dark history we know as the Holocaust.

Near the end of this play, Mrs. Who gives Meg some sage advice as she prepares for her final, frightening adventure. The stakes are high, for the life of her brother Charles Wallace hangs in the balance. The advice involves what might seem a bit illogical to us. As she encounters the frightening world in which her brother is imprisoned, she is encouraged to forge ahead not by sheer force, but with love, the only antidote to hate. As St. Paul states in I Corinthians, “The foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.†As followers of Jesus Christ, we are called to recognize and live by this strange reversal of values. The hierarchy of the world is turned on its head in this economy of the Gospel. Things are not as they seem. Might does not make right. Innate genius does not win the day. And giving in is a precursor to victory.
