AFS is committed to providing intercultural learning experiences that help people become agents of positive change in the world. lncreased cultural com ce is the stepping stone for a global tom orrow an d a diverse today. ln support of this mission, AFS has created l6 educational objectives, each focused on different aspects of personal, interpersonal and community development. These goals serve as the backbone for AFS exchange programs, and help participants develop the knowledge and skills that are necessary to succeed in an increasingly globalized workforce.

l. Personal values and skills: As a result of their

experiences, participants learn toturn difficult situations into valuable opportunities for personal growth. They are challenged to reassess their values, stretch their capacities and practice new life skills while gaining awareness of previously hidden aspects of their own personalities.

2. lnterpersonal re lationship-building: AFS Participants become fully involved in daily living and working arrangements with a variety of people in the new environment, which are transferable to many other settings during the participant's lifetime. 3. lntercultural

edEe and sensitivity: The AFS exchange experience deepens participants'insight s into t heir home culture as well as their knowledge of their host (or visiting) cultures-both strengths and weaknesses-from the perspective of an outsider.

4. Global issues awareness: AFS Participants become able to empathize with their hosts' perspective on some of these problems, and thus to appreciate that workable solutions must be culturally sensitive, not merely chronologically feasible.

BrinE the World to ydur communities! Did you know that the wol'td can fit into your home? You could find out by hosting an AFS, participant from one of more than AFS countries! AFS host families are people who care about youth, education and the future. Some have teenagers, others have ypung children or children who have already left home, or no children at all. Some host parents are married. Some are single. AFS families live on farmE, in small towns, in suburbs and in city apartments. They are of all races and nationalitiesl They are people who are willing to take time to share with a new son or daughter. l

AFS families host students without asking for payment; getting a new son or daughter is the rewardl Hosting creat[s a lifetime friendship with another person - and often - with another family in a different part of the world. Hosts also benefit from friendships with people who have an international perspective and by participating in AFS activities with tl"rem.
