Doe 1 Jane Doe Mr. Wolff Integrated Computers Block 5 22 February 2007 Career Research Paper My name is Jane Doe. I was born on September 13, 1992 and lived in Rocklin, California. When I was two years old we moved to Meadow Vista. I still live there with my brother, Chris and my parents Mike and Cindy. Currently I am attending Colfax High School where I am a freshman. I am enjoying the new life of high school by taking the drama class and integrated science. The performing arts classes here are spectacular! I am enjoying it a lot and I hope to continue taking them all four years of my high school career. I have been acting since I was a little girl and I want to stay with it. I also have a passion for soccer and I am trying out for the school team. I played Recreational soccer for around 8 years and moved up to Select this past year. I also hope to play next year. Another hobby I have is dance, Swing mainly, but I also do Latin. Although these hobbies are very exciting, the job I would like to pursue is acting. Acting is my dream career; it would give me an opportunity to show my talent, entertain other people and to enjoy what I do everyday. When I took the Pathways to the World of Careers (Pathways) Survey, it placed me in “Arts, Media and Entertainment”. I agree with the results and I am happy I got them because those are my interests. The Personality Survey (Career) placed me as a “designer”. A designer fits my personality because I love to use my imagination and put my emotions into what I do (Career). The Interest Profile put me in the category of “Artistic” (Choice). The survey says that an Artistic person is a “creator”, they enjoy all kinds of art and they have a desire to express
Doe 2 themselves through that art (Choice). I believe this suits me very well. The Keirsey Temperament Survey placed me as an “Idealist”. The title “Idealist” suits me because I also define myself as passionately concerned about others, and I strive to discover (Keirsey). I enjoy cooperation, yet hold myself to strict standards (Kiersey). The two jobs I simplified my research to are jobs in the field of acting and graphic design (Choice). The reason I chose “Actor” for one of the careers I would like to research was my passion is acting. I want to enjoy my career and acting would be a great way for me to do this. Although the job openings are at very low rate, and most actors have a second job, I would be very grateful if I was given the opportunity to pursue my dream (Choice). There are currently only 2,000 job openings annually, but by 2014 the employment of actors will go up around 16.1% (Choice). The pay also usually doesn’t support a family, however I would be willing to have another job because acting means so much to me (Choice). Becoming a “Graphic Designer” would be a very interesting career as well. I enjoy working on computers and I’m always thinking of ideas and ways to decorate. A graphic designer, designs layouts for the media and creates graphics for TV’s and computer’s (Choice). The average salary for this career ranges from $29,250 to $50,690 annually and you also are required to have a bachelor’s degree (Choice). The job openings are larger than the acting career, and by 2014 it is estimated that that employment range will rise another 15.2% (Choice)! Both these careers would give me great opportunities and allow me to enjoy my career. The Colfax Career Pathway that best suits me would be “Arts and Communications”. I believe this because I see myself as imaginative, sensitive yet expressive (Wolff). I enjoy singing and acting, designing, writing and speaking (Wolff). Both careers that I selected to
Doe 3 research fell into this category. Some classes I could take to prepare me for these careers are: drafting, photography, performing arts (drama), film, a foreign language, biology and psychology (Wolff). Taking a foreign language could help because if you are playing a role in which you speak in another language, it will help to have already learned it. Also photography and drafting could be prepare you for helping with set design, costume design, and designing software. Some extra curricular activities I could attend are: ‘S’ club, newspaper, film making/drama, leadership, art club and more (Wolff)! Leadership would be very useful if you wish to enter the field of acting because it will boost self confidence, teach you how to lead a group, and take charge. As I researched these careers, I learned many new things about the media. For example, I did not know that the average actor cannot support a family unless they have another job (Choices). I also came to find out, that you needed to have a bachelor’s degree to become a graphic designer (Choices). However, the one question that I learned the most from was; what is a career pathway? A career pathway is an organizational tool, it helps you examine and look into the careers your interested in. I always though a career pathway was the idea of what you wanted to grow up to be; a doctor or a fireman etc, but its more complicated than that. Now I can use this information to help me reach my goal and follow my dream.
