Spring Chromebook Collection - May 17th

Important Information Regarding Awards Day We are planning to have a picnic Chromebook Collection Letter lunch on The Egg (the green space in front of the ITC Building). We are asking that each student bring $3 for lunch ​that day. Students will have pizza, water, and a small dessert. Please send the $3 with

your child to school by May 14, 2018.​ If you are unable to afford this cost, please contact your child’s Homeroom teacher. 8th Grade ELA/Social Studies 8th Grade Science This week we finished our study of WWII and the Holocaust as part of our PBL--Resilience Through Time.

This week, we reviewed ecosystems!

Students completed ​Night​ by Elie Wiesel. Students worked in small groups and pairs to reflect on chapters 6-9 and students responded to a reading of Elie Wiesel’s “The Perils of Indifference” speech with fishbowl discussions and reflective notes.

8th Grade Math/Math I

  Ways to support your student:  ● Ask your student about his or her knowledge  about ecosystems.  ● Offer encouragement as we continue the reviews  toward EOG’s.  ● Email Coach West with any questions. 

8th Grade Design Thinking

ALL players on Coach Gaffney’s Stunt Kite Resillience PBL MATH Team should report for practice, Student teams are in the FINAL building & test flying phase of their Stunt Kites.

DAILY! We are on the uphill climb to final exams. 15 minutes a day of math practice via Study Island & classwork is critical to WINNING the BIG GAME! #Never Give Up! #Keep Pounding! 8th grade math​ ​is into Geometry: Angles, Pythagorean Theorem, & Volume. Math 1​ ​We are finishing up Quadratic Equations! Study Island​ Homework, every week. 2 topics to 70% Mastery. Students are being asked to STRETCH and do some self-directed learning. Encourage them to use their devices to go FIND solutions and understanding.

Friday, May 4th we are off to Jockey’s Ridge to fly our resilient kites! Please remember to pack sunscreen & wear closed to shoes!

FREE Tutoring/Practice time: Coach Gaffney tutors math students from 3-430p every​ Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon. If your student needs additional help or practice, please join us! (Students ​must​ be picked up by 4:30pm, per NEAAAT policy).

English I/World History This week, students completed their symbolism essay on ​Night ​and completed their annotated bibliography for World History. Students worked together with peers and coaches to outline, draft, give peer feedback, and revise their literary essays on how Elie Wiesel uses symbolism in his memoir. Students also had the opportunity to meet with coaches during a small group study session and sign up for individual tutoring sessions during class time to receive individualized assistance and feedback on their World History annotated bibliographies.

Earth and Environmental Science This week, we discussed ​why biodiversity is important to the biosphere and explained how abiotic and biotic factors interact to create the various biomes in North Carolina.

7th Grade ELA/Social Studies 7th Grade Science This week, 7th grade we began our presentations of our resilient figures. Students presented final projects on their resilient figures. The classroom transformed into a museum gallery where students provided peer feedback as well as learning about important historical figures.

7th Grade Math This week, we learned…​ how to find the probability of an event occuring. We also talked about good strategies to use to collect data from a random sample out of a larger population.

This week our students reviewed electric circuits and energy transfers. We also did our first full curriculum review. The end of the year is coming quick and we will continue to prepare for the Final Exam in Science.

7th Grade PoST This week, we… ​had a great time! We reviewed Expressions and Equations (algebra), worked on our robotics courses and finished the week with Code.org Lesson 15: The Artist 4. Students explored functions and practiced drawing houses. This week’s challenges involved the human respiratory and circulatory systems, deforestation and a toy box filled with simple machines.

Students showcased their creativity and innovative spirit in designing and programming their robots to tackle these unique challenges. We can look forward to many more exciting design challenges in the future!

Ways to support your child: Help your child with their weekly Khan Academy assignments. There are videos that you can watch together! Please visit Canvas to see extra tutorial videos and copies of the notes from class as well.

REMINDER!! Students need to bring a refillable water bottle. There is a Culligan water dispenser available in the ITC.
