Presented by: Linda Bruno
SWFLN Webinar This webinar will be the first of SWFLN’s DIVERSITY DISCOVERY INSTITUTE, a series of nine webinars to learn about discovery and how to best provide library services to your diverse patrons! Although we often automatically connect “diversity” to culture, one of the first definitions of diversity that you’ll see in the dictionary is “variety.” And variety we have in our library environments! Age, gender, culture, race, upbringing, personalities, geographical background, education, learning styles, social status, profession, introvert/extrovert, spirituality, political beliefs, relationships…the list goes on and on. So let’s take a look at some of those elements to gain a better understanding of our patrons, our co-workers, and ourselves!

Binding her experiences in comedy and libraries, Meredith created www.StandUpLibrarian.com in June of 2010 to educate and entertain people about the importance of libraries and literacy; through literary comedy shows and parody songs, hosting and promoting literary events, conducting interviews with authors and library personnel, and visits to unique libraries and literary landmarks across the country. A combination of Pippi Longstocking and Sandra Bernhard with the style of Carrie Bradshaw, Meredith performs at library and book events across the country We hope you can join us for an informative and collegial afternoon.

Centered on a philosophy of service to a diverse community, SWFLN is launching the Diversity Discovery Institute (DDI) which will include training, serve as a clearinghouse for resources, and foster diversity as a value and key action area. Using a variety of trainers, the DDI will offer dedicated training focused on each of the beginning letters of the word "Diversity", D-I-V-E-R-S-I-T-Y. Because "you can't teach diversity in just one day or one session", these webinars are being planned to begin the process of understanding diversity, one small step at a time. Each of these trainings will address a component/idea/theme of diversity. The DDI will assist SWFLN member libraries in developing effective programs to serve their patrons as a direct response to the need expressed by the library community. The goals of the DDI are:
Like Our Facebook Page
www.facebook/SWFLN
• To empower library staff and volunteers to reach out to diverse populations; • To increase the skill of library staff in working effectively with diverse populations;
• To increase library programs and services to diverse communities in local areas. WISH UPON A SHELL
Do you have an idea for future training? Do you, or a coworker, need to learn about a specific subject? Click here and submit your ideas, we can’t wait to hear from you.
