Keeping Your Balance in the Midst of Change September 9, 2014
9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Presented by: Linda Bruno
SWFLN Office: 13120 Westlinks Terrace, Unit 3/ Fort Myers, FL 33913 In Keeping Your Balance in the Midst of Change, we will not only discuss the reasons for change, but why most of us resist it. We’ll learn how to deal with that resistance – in ourselves and others. Along the way, we’ll also discover how to deal with the changes we all face every day. You’ll have an opportunity to reflect on what is most important in your life – and decide how you are going to make time for those priorities. As a bonus, you’ll receive an extensive list of ways you, too, can return much-needed balance to your life.

D is for the Differences in Our World October 16, 2014
9:00 AM — 12:00 PM
Presented by: Linda Bruno Emotional Intelligence – maybe you’ve heard the term, but what in the world does it mean? The short answer is simply being intelligent about emotions – yours and others'. The longer – and much more interesting – answer will fascinate you: • Why does Emotional Intelligence matter? • What are the elements of Emotional Intelligence and how do those elements affect my life? • Can we improve our Emotional Intelligence?
1:00 PM — 4:00 PM
Presented by: Linda Bruno Although we often automatically connect “diversity” to culture, one of the first definitions of diversity that you’ll see in the dictionary is “variety.” And variety we have in our library environments! Age, gender, culture, race, upbringing, personalities, geographical background, education, learning styles, social status, profession, introvert/extrovert, spirituality, political beliefs, relationships…the list goes on and on. So let’s take a look at some of those elements to gain a better understanding of our patrons, our co-workers, and ourselves!

Field of Interest: Adult Literacy By: Roberta Reiss, Collier County Public L ibr ary
Helping libraries provide better, faster service.
Thanks to the scholarship I received from SWFLN this year, I was able to attend the Florida Literacy Conference held the first week of May in Daytona. The Open Books Open Minds Conference kicked off with an inspiring talk by keynote speaker Byron Pitts, an award winning national correspondent at ABC, who only learned how to read at the age of 12. I attended sessions such as Learning English is a Library Affair, Taking the Fear out of Using Electronics, a Roundtable Discussion for Community-Based Literacy Directors, as well as Libraries and Literacy Providers Collaborate.

This opportunity allowed me to network with other professionals in the literacy field and visit with exhibitors selling materials to add to our collection for English learners and adults studying for the GED and the US Citizenship tests. This chance to re-energize our efforts to serve this special segment of our community was priceless. I could bring back new ideas from my literacy colleagues and share our own best practices in serving our English learners, adult new readers and partner literacy providers. We thank SWFLN for its commitment to providing the best professional development opportunities for staff at the Collier County Public Library.
