Course Description Aquatics

Coordinator Biography Andy Myers With over 20 years of swimming teaching and coaching experience at virtually all levels, Andy is finishing his third year at UNIS Hanoi. Prior to UNIS Hanoi he spent over eight years at the International School of Bangkok, the last six as Aquatics Director and Head Swim Coach. At UNIS Hanoi Andy oversees the Aquatics ASAs, Swim Teams and Community Education programmes. Andy received his Bachelor of Arts and teaching certification from Oakland University and Wayne State University respectively. Last year he also coordinated the Aquatics Summer Programme.

In Aquatics, students will enjoy a mix of skills development appropriate to their current abilities. Water games designed to build their confidence in the water such as water polo will be an integral part of the summer curriculum. The third component will be a focus on water safety as we realize that thousands of children in Vietnam die each year in drowning incidents.

Create We will explore and develop our artistic confidence and imagination in the Create program. The students will work with a variety of art supplies to create their own unique masterpieces to take home. Some of our artistic activities might include multi-media designs and collages, emulating famous artists, painting techniques, drawing demonstrations, building 3D sculptures, and more!

Andrea Heinz Just finishing her second year of teaching at UNIS-Hanoi, Andrea is excited to be the Create Coordinator for the Summer School Program. She has worked as an art teacher for over 10 years, and has taught students from preschool through grade 10. She has a Bachelors of Art degree from Augustana College with a double major in studio art and art education. She also has a minor in art history. Andrea has a Masters of Education degree specializing in Global Secondary Education from the College of New Jersey. Before moving to Hanoi, Andrea taught art in Dubai, Thailand, and Illinois (USA).

Dance

Andy Dutton Andy has been teaching Physical Education in International Schools for 11 years, after graduating from Flinders University of South Australia with a degree in Physical Education. He is currently an Elementary PE teacher at UNIS Hanoi. Andy is passionate about both music and movement, and is excited about facilitating student expression through movement during the summer program.

The focus of this program is to develop a passion for this form of art, by exposing the students to a variety of disciplines ranging from street dance, hip hop, modern, jazz and fitness aerobics. All of the sessions will cater for skilled dancers as well as beginners. The students will be taught routines as well as given time to explore and express themselves in ways of their choice. There will be lots of movement through music, games and plenty of fun. The students will be taught how to choreograph a dance and they will get the opportunity to apply these skills immediately in a performance (if they wish) at the end of the programme.

Digital In camp digital students will become digital artists through a series of fun collaborative projects. The will have the opportunity to experiment with stop motion, digital painting, photography and simple game design. Learning techniques and process that will help them to express their very own creative ideas using cameras, iPad and computer software.

Michelle Wise Michelle has been teaching art at international schools for 14 years, from Kindergarten through Diploma Program. She works as the MSHS visual art teacher t at the United Nations International School. She has a Fine Arts degree at the Canterbury School of Fine Art majoring in sculpture and a Masters in Teaching at University of Sydney. Michelle has extensive experience in with digital media and is looking forward to helping kids to be creators of digital content.

Drama

Krista D. Ramsay Krista is a registered teacher from Canada. She studied drama at Manitoba Theatre for Young People and the University of Manitoba. Krista has been teaching for 12 years and has taught in Tokyo, Seoul, London, Bangkok, Hanoi, and Helsinki. She has used drama as a tool to build confidence in students between the ages of 3-65. She has also produced plays, facilitated script writing workshops, and performed reader's theatres. She enjoyed working at UNIS Summer Programme for the two previous years and is looking forward to participating in the 2017 UNIS Summer Programme.

In Drama you will make new friends, develop your artistic talents, build confidence, and have fun doing it! Drama is all about engaged imaginations and energetic bodies. Instead of watching passively, students are up on their feet actively telling stories they have created together. It’s creative, social, face-to-face AND physical. Not to mention, it’s FUN! Over the course of each session, students give voice and physical form to their imaginations, develop fundamental theatre skills and work toward collaboratively creating performances based on the ideas of the group.

English Language In this area, students will engage with the English language through speaking, listening, reading and writing. In an English mixed-ability setting, students will share ideas, interact to work towards common goals, and play collaborative games. They will also enjoy literature and communicate in writing. Depending on the age group, students will participate in different activities, such as working on mini-projects and presenting their results, to learning songs and role playing.

Todd Aydelott Todd Aydelott has been teaching first grade at UNIS for the past 4 years. Originally from Eugene, Oregon, which is in the Pacific Northwest of the US, Todd has been teaching for more than 15 years including the US, Mexico, Thailand, and Vietnam. He graduated in 2001 from Western Oregon University with a B.A. in Early Childhood/Elementary Education, and earned his Masters of Education with specialties in Reading and ESOL from Pacific University. He has also recently completed certification in the OrtonTodd loves Gillingham method. language and learning it. In addition to English he speaks Thai, Spanish, and is learning Vietnamese.

“Hands on” Science

Van Phan Van obtained her first Bachelor of Arts in Marketing from Hanoi Economics University (1995) and second Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics from Hanoi University of Foreign Studies (1996). In the same year, she was awarded a teaching certificate from the latter university. Van also has awards relating to Chemical and Microbiological Laboratory Safety (2013). Van joined UNIS Hanoi in 1997 and has worked in numerous departments: Design Technology, Music, Art and Library. However, she has been working in the Science Department for over 17 years. Van has been the Science Summer Programme Coordinator for 6 years.

The ‘Hands-on’ science programme gives students the opportunity to learn about science through our interactive and hands-on activities. It allows children to become junior scientists for the summer and embark on a series of science adventures! Children will be amazed when they: • Discover cool chemical reactions: volcano, rocket and elephant toothpaste • Build wind turbines and kites • Perform magical tricks based on science knowledge • Build their own electrical games, paddle boat and get to take it home Hands-on science Summer Programme involves: • A balance of learning and fun • Exciting exploration • Adapting to different age groups

Music

Luke DallaGrana

In Music, students will further develop a sense of beat and rhythm through singing, playing instruments and movement activities. We will explore some of the fundamental elements of music such as pitch and dynamics by experimenting with sound and playing musical games. We will review different types of notation and use notation to play music together in an ensemble.

Luke has been teaching music for 8 years, the last 6 of which have been at UNIS. Luke has a bachelor's degree in Music Education from the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire and has taught General Music, Band and Orchestra with students ranging from Kindergarten to Grade 12. This summer, he is excited to work with a range of different students from UNIS and from other schools around Hanoi and is looking forward to exposing students to great musical experiences through classroom performances and games.

Maths

Stefan Hendry Stefan has a Bachelor’s Degree in Literature, a Bachelor of Education (Primary) and a Masters in Special Education. He began his teaching career in his early thirties after years working in A&R and Creative for multinational media companies. Over 11 years as a teacher, Stefan has taught Grades 1 to 6, Extension Maths to Opportunity Classes and has been Technology Coordinator of four schools in Sydney Australia before changing to teach Special Education in a School for Specific Purposes in outback Australia. Stefan has recently completed all Add+Vantage MR Courses through the US Math Recovery Council and is looking forward to running creative, engaging and challenging Math groups during the UNIS Summer Programme.

In Maths, students will be challenged to develop their problem-solving skills in a range of different Mathematical areas. The teaching approach will aim to have students working just beyond the ‘cutting edge’ of their current knowledge, this is done by utilizing inquiry, that is, problem based teaching approaches. Working in groups of various sizes, students will learn through targeted games, with an emphasis on developing mental strategies and confidence using ever more sophisticated strategies. Group and individual Maths Challenges will also be given to provide small teams of students’ collaborative goals to achieve.

Sport and Games This course will be based around a games approach to Physical Education whilst focusing on the development and improvement of the individual student’s fundamental motor skills. The students will be exposed to a wide variety of fun modified games that cater for individual improvement, differing ability levels and exposure to different sporting equipment. Students will also have the opportunity to learn games and teamwork skills as a team member in a supportive and fun atmosphere. Finally the major focus of the co-ordinating team is to develop a positive attitude for all the students towards enjoying games and physical activity.

Daniel Lucardie Daniel has a Bachelor of Education where he specialized in Primary Education. He also has a Graduate Diploma of Education in Physical Education. Daniel has 26 years teaching experience in Primary Education at all grade levels. With his 26 years of teaching Daniel as taught Physical Education (PE) in Australia and internationally for 18 years. Daniel also has extensive coaching experience, 10 years of leadership in PE (Head of Department and Athletic Director) and taught Sports, Games and Activities for the last 3 years at the UNIS Hanoi Summer Programme.
