Administrative​ ​Procedure​ ​360

GRADING​ ​AND​ ​EVALUATION​ ​OF​ ​STUDENTS Background The​ ​district​ ​expects​ ​evaluation​ ​practices​ ​that​ ​assess​ ​student​ ​development​ ​and​ ​learning;​ ​provide for​ ​fair​ ​and​ ​just​ ​student​ ​promotion​ ​and​ ​placement​ ​decisions;​ ​and​ ​supply​ ​appropriate​ ​information to​ ​students​ ​and​ ​parents/legal​ ​guardians​ ​to​ ​guide​ ​their​ ​educational​ ​decisions. Procedures 1. Teachers​ ​hold​ ​the​ ​prime​ ​responsibility​ ​for​ ​student​ ​evaluation​ ​and​ ​shall​ ​employ​ ​a comprehensive​ ​and​ ​valid​ ​evaluation​ ​process​ ​to​ ​fulfil​ ​the​ ​purposes​ ​of​ ​evaluation​ ​at​ ​the classroom​ ​level. 2. In​ ​the​ ​first​ ​month​ ​of​ ​instruction,​ ​teachers​ ​shall​ ​provide​ ​to​ ​each​ ​student,​ ​or​ ​in​ ​the​ ​case​ ​of elementary​ ​students,​ ​to​ ​parents/legal​ ​guardians,​ ​a​ ​clear​ ​brief​ ​statement​ ​of​ ​the​ ​nature​ ​of each​ ​program​ ​and​ ​the​ ​evaluation​ ​practices​ ​to​ ​be​ ​used. 3. Principals​ ​are​ ​responsible​ ​for​ ​assuring​ ​that​ ​appropriate​ ​practices​ ​are​ ​developed​ ​and implemented​ ​at​ ​the​ ​school​ ​level​ ​for​ ​the​ ​success​ ​of​ ​all​ ​students.​ ​See​ ​the​ A ​ lberta​ ​Assessment Consortium​​ ​website​ ​for​ ​professional​ ​development​ ​information. 4. Principals​ ​are​ ​responsible​ ​for​ ​assuring​ ​that​ ​the​ ​school’s​ ​final​ ​standing​ ​for​ ​each​ ​student​ ​is recorded​ ​and​ ​that​ ​it​ ​reflects​ ​the​ ​student’s​ ​cumulative​ ​achievement​ ​for​ ​each​ ​subject. 5. The​ ​maximum​ ​weighting​ ​of​ ​any​ ​junior​ ​high​ ​assessment​ ​(i.e.​ ​final​ ​exam,​ ​project,​ ​etc.)​ ​is​ ​15 per​ ​cent.​ ​The​ ​maximum​ ​weighting​ ​of​ ​any​ ​high​ ​school,​ ​teacher​ ​assigned,​ ​assessment​ ​(i.e. final​ ​exam,​ ​project,​ ​etc.)​ ​is​ ​25​ ​per​ ​cent​ ​(Note:​ ​No​ ​two​ ​or​ ​more​ ​assessments​ ​mandated​ ​in​ ​a short​ ​time​ ​span​ ​shall​ ​exceed​ ​the​ ​above​ ​percentages.​ ​For​ ​example,​ ​a​ ​test​ ​on​ ​the​ ​Monday worth​ ​20​ ​per​ ​cent​ ​followed​ ​by​ ​an​ ​exam​ ​on​ ​the​ ​Friday​ ​worth​ ​15​ ​per​ ​cent​ ​would​ ​be​ ​seen​ ​as​ ​a combined​ ​total​ ​of​ ​35​ ​per​ ​cent).
