CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS, RULES & PROCEDURES Welcome to Mrs. Smith’s Algebra I class! I hope this year will be beneficial for you – both in increasing your understanding and your proficiency in math. These expectations, rules, and procedures are intended to keep the classroom environment safe, orderly, and productive. Class Expectations I. Respect yourself, your teacher, and your classmates a. Respect others’ property. Avoid touching or writing on anything that does not belong to you (including desks, chromebooks, textbooks, teacher’s belongings, walls, bulletin boards, etc) b. Respect yourself and the rest of us by using appropriate language and wearing appropriate clothing (dress code will be enforced). II. Put forth your best effort at all times a. Always do your own work b. Put quality ahead of just getting it done III. Be prepared for class each day a. Come prepared with all necessary materials  An organized binder or notebook containing all necessary materials and handouts.  Chromebook (charged)  Paper and pencil IV. Pay attention, participate and ask questions a. Engage in what is going on in the classroom. If you have a question, ask it. There are no stupid questions. Be proactive about your learning and don’t be afraid to ask for help V. Take responsibility for your actions a. If you are confronted about a rule infraction, own up to it. Don’t deny, lie, or blame it on someone else b. All school rules will be enforced. If you choose to break these, be prepared to accept the consequences.

CLASS RULES I. Arrive to class on time a. When the bell rings, you need to be in the classroom b. All tardy students should have a pass from the previous teacher or office c. The restroom should be used BEFORE class. Students will not be permitted to leave until the lesson is over. II. Be prepared for class a. Notebook: A 3-ring binder is best to accommodate class notes and worksheets. b. Pencil: All assessments (quizzes, tests, etc) MUST be done in pencil. c. Desk: Clear your desk except for what we are using in class. All book bags should be on the floor. III. Textbook - Algebra 1 Prentice Hall a. An online book is available for your use. A link to www.pearsonsuccessnet.com is available on my website. Sign on procedures will follow. b. A limited number of textbooks are available for use in my classroom. IV.

Calculators a. The majority of work in this class can, and should, be completed without the use of a calculator. This helps to enhance a number sense in students.

V.

Do not cheat, plagiarize, or copy work. a. Cheating is completely unacceptable. If I see you cheating on any assignment – even for another class – I will confiscate your work. This will result in a zero for my assignment and a report to the other teacher

.

VI.

Homework a. Usually assigned daily and checked for completion and effort the following day. In most cases, you will need to show ALL work. b. Each checked assignment will be worth 3 points. Over the course of a marking period, this will be roughly the point equivalent of a quiz or test. Not doing your homework will have a big impact on your grade!!! c. When you are absent, you will need to get the notes/assignment. This is YOUR responsibility  Notes are in the class binder in the front of the room.  Handouts with your name on them are available in the hanging folder above the bookcase.  Makeup homework must be turned in to receive credit.  Homework will also be listed on Google classroom and Skyward – check it if you are out.

VII.

Class Scribe a. Once per marking period, each student will be responsible for being the class scribe. On your assigned day, you will take complete notes on anything covered during that period. The next school day, you will turn in a clean, rewritten, hole-punched copy of the notes with NO FRINGE. This will be a 20 point grade. To receive all 20 points, your notes must include: 

The date (upper right hand corner)

Your name (upper right hand corner)

All notes and examples given in class – if I write it on the board, you write it in the notes.

Remember – make sure that someone else can follow your notes. Include extra explanations where necessary

The homework assignment

VIII.

Handing in work b. Any work (quizzes, tests, scribe notes, etc) should be placed in the basket by my desk.

IX.

80 - 89%

C 70 - 79% F 69% and below b. During a marking period, you will have a variety of assessments including Tests

~ 75-100 points each

Quizzes

~ 30-50 points each

Homework ~ 50 points Scribe

~ 20 points

Projects

~ 40 points each (varies with each unit)

c. Midterm and final exams will each count as 10% of your final grade. Any student with a 95% average at the end of the 4th marking period will be exempt from taking the final exam.
