FEATURED ARTICLES THS WELCOMES ALUMNI By David Hughes, History/Social Science Department Instructional Coach

O

n February 16, 2018, Tustin High welcomed 1998 alumni Brian Forde to speak to the Model United Nations and STEM classes. Brian shared his experiences as a former Senior White House Advisor to President Obama and his 20+ years working at the nexus of technology, entrepreneurship, and public policy. Brian’s story was quite inspirational! After graduating from Tustin, he earned his BA from UCLA and his MBA from the London Business School. Forde served in the Peace Corps in Nicaragua where he started one of the country’s largest phone companies serving the rural poor. In 2011, he became a Senior Advisor for Mobile and Data Innovation in the White House. While there, he helped lead President Obama’s Climate Data Initiative. Forde also led work on Hurricane Sandy relief efforts, the revitalization of Detroit, the White House TechHire Initiative to promote diversity in tech, and the Equal Pay App Challenge- a campaign to improve the gender pay gap and increase the transparency of pay data. After leaving the White House, Brian was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum and served as director of the MIT Media Lab's digital currency initiative. Brian spent much of his visit responding to questions from our students. When asked what he is doing now, he shared that he is running for Congress in District 45. What a Tiller success story--Thank you for visiting us, and good luck Brian!

UPCOMING INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC EVENTS By Michael Fisk, Instrumental Music Director

T

his year, Tustin High School will again be hosting the District Showcase in the Sport’s Pavilion, marking the fourth year of the event, on Thursday, April 12th. Last year, the showcase had talent from Tustin, Beckman, and Foothill High School in the form of Drumlines, Winterguards, and Majorettes, and this year will follow in its footsteps. Even though the showcase hosts students and groups from the three rivals, it isn’t a competition; rather a friendly meeting of the arts and one of the few places where the three high schools can come together to make something amazing. Every Spring, the Tustin High School Band and Orchestra puts on its Spring Concert, which features pieces of music from each group in attendance. It is a tradition to combine the two groups into a full Symphonic Orchestra and perform a piece together as the finale. This year, the Spring Concert will be held on Friday, April 27th, at 7:00pm in The Beckman High School Performing Arts Center. Admission is free. The music pieces include Imaginarium by Randall D. Standridge and Sparta by Todd Parish.

atalia Murrietta is the first Lady Tiller Athlete of the Week for the Spring Season. Although she is only a sophomore, Natalia has already proven to be one of the best athletes in the Tustin Track Program. Last week, she medaled at the Irvine Invitational Meet by taking fifth place. Natalia runs the 100M hurdles, and undoubtedly, one of the hardest events in a track meet- the 300M hurdles. In addition to her athletic strength, Natalia is also a hardworking, accomplished student. She has A’s in all of her classes-including her 3 AP courses. Because of her tenacity and commitment to success, it is clear that there is no hurdle in life that Natalia will not be able to get over.
