ABOUT THE COMMITTEE The Joint Legislative Air and Water Pollution Control and Conservation Committee, commonly referred to as the Joint Legislative Conservation Committee, is a bipartisan and bicameral service agency of the Pennsylvania General Assembly. The committee provides objective research and recommendations to the state legislature on a variety of topics related to the sustainable use of the Commonwealth’s diverse natural resources.
INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION The committee is currently accepting applications for full and part-time (20-30 hours per week) internships for the fall semester of 2016. The intern will gain valuable experience in the legislative process by working on policy issues related to the conservation of Pennsylvania’s natural resources. Internships are unpaid, but students are strongly encouraged to seek academic credit for their work.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Conduct basic research on environmental issues Work with committee staff to develop and analyze legislation Assist in conducting analysis and evaluation of existing state environmental programs Develop findings, conclusions and recommendations resulting from research and prepare reports for the General Assembly Prepare newsletter articles, report summaries and fact sheets Monitor legislative activity Assist in responding to committee member inquiries and requests Research and respond to constituent and stakeholder inquiries
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Communicate clearly and concisely to a variety of audiences Display a strong background in writing and academic research Possess knowledge of basic office software applications, such as Microsoft Office Demonstrate familiarity with state government and the legislative process Approach public policy issues in an objective manner Maintain the flexibility to examine diverse topics and issues Maintain a positive working relationship with members, staff and constituents Interact with a variety of viewpoints in a tactful and professional manner
EDUCATION The legislative intern must be currently enrolled at an accredited college or university located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Students pursuing a degree in political science, environmental studies or a related field are preferred.
