How to Get in Shape for Band Camp

July 31st, the first day of band camp, is just a month away. Getting ready for the big day, and the days to follow, is extremely important. Preparing for camp requires strength training, cardiovascular, training and proper nutrition. Here are some steps to follow:

Stretch for 5-10 minutes before and after exercise. This reduces the risk of injury.

Run at least 3 days a week. Increase the duration and pace your runs as you build strength and stamina. If you’re not running yet, walk briskly or jog until your fitness level improves.

Increase the length of time you are able to run by adding intervals at a slower pace. Drop to a jog or a walk every few minutes to catch your breath and return to running. This helps you transition to a higher level of fitness.

Do other types of cardiovascular exercise– cycle, swim, aerobics. These all build cardiovascular fitness.

Strengthen muscles in your arms, shoulders, back and legs. Do pushups, leg-lifts, lunges, squats on days you do not do cardio exercise.

Build muscles in your core with crunches, sit-ups, oblique exercises, back extensions and plank poses. Band routines demand great core strength, so spend some time on your abs and lower back.

Hold your instrument in playing position to develop the muscles it requires. Begin by holding it for 2 minutes at a time and gradually increase the time.

Limit the amount of sugar, processed food, white bread, trans fat and soda. Eat lean protein, complex carbohydrates, healthy fats, fruits and vegetables.

DRINK WATER For more detailed exercises and nutrition information, go to LIVESTRONG.COM.

Financial Assistance Program All possible applicants need:

Hello Mighty Ram Band Family, Hope you are enjoying your summer. We are all excited about the upcoming show and marching season. Starting at the end of last year and throughout the summer, the band and staff have worked very hard on what we know will be another wonderful show from the Mighty Ram Band! To make this a success, many volunteers ae needed to help support the band. Volunteers are needed in a variety of duties during the whole year, not just marching season. Chaperones for buses, help with water during games, help with game day meals, baking for breakfasts and bake sales,… the list goes on. We have opportunities for EVERYONE to help out no matter your schedule. Volunteering with the band is a truly rewarding experience. It’s very easy to sign up to volunteer. We use a website called SignUp.com that will send out emails when help is needed and remind you of spots you have signed up for. All you need to do is a couple of easy steps to start your support for the band. (Everyone needs to do this process whether you have volunteered before or not.) 1. 2. 3.

Go to risd.org and do a criminal background check. (This has to be done every year by everyone. You can do this starting July 1. Click on: RISD Volunteering to get started. Register on our SignUp. Click on: SignUp Attend our Volunteer Meeting on Tuesday, August 22, 7pm8pm in the Band Hall.

Thank you for taking the few minutes to sign up and support our kids. Let’s make this season a huge success!
