Students earn full points for an activity by: • Being on time and completing all facets of the activity (setup/cleanup) • Wearing appropriate clothing (dress code, required shirt, etc.) • Displaying appropriate behavior and actively participating in the activity (not talking on the phone, not doing homework, sitting with the group, watching the activity, being a good leader, dancing appropriately etc.) Students earn full points for an assignment by: • Doing the assignment/task accurately and following all instructions • Completing the assignment/task on time Students must maintain at least a B average in ASB to remain in the Leadership Class. Failure to maintain a B may also jeopardize your position/role as an officer/member of ASB. All students are responsible for keeping a time card for each grading period. If a student misses a mandatory activity, he/she must complete makeup hours before/after school or at lunch. Students are responsible for their own makeup hours and must email Ms. Katz when their hours have been completed.
Attendance • All ASB events are mandatory. ASB members must attend events unless the advisor says otherwise. • There should be no absences on the day of an ASB event. If a student is sick and unable to attend the event/school day of the event, they must call (310-‐ 393-‐9227, ext: 73106) or e-‐mail Ms. Katz (
[email protected]) prior to the start of the event or during that school day. It is the student’s responsibility to see Ms. Katz for a make-‐up assignment within 48 hours of an excused missed event. • All make-‐up work for activities will be in the form of hours. Students that miss a three-‐hour event will be expected to complete three additional hours of service to Student Leadership. • Failure to attend an event or inform Ms. Katz prior to an absence makes the missed event unexcused. Students will receive a zero for that event and will not be allowed to make it up. Emergency absences will be handled on a case-‐by-‐case basis. • Excessive absences (excused and unexcused) may jeopardize your position and role as an officer or member of ASB. • Missing three activities (not including emergency situations) without pre-‐ approved permission from Ms. Katz may jeopardize your position and role as an officer or member of ASB. A written warning will be issued upon missing the second activity.
Academic Performance
• Members of ASB are expected to maintain high academic standards. Failure to maintain at least a C in academic courses may result in probation or removal from ASB. • Any citizenship or work habits grade of “Unsatisfactory” or “Needs Improvement” will not be tolerated and may result in probation from ASB.
Behavior Policy • Student leaders will be held to the highest standard of behavior at all times. Those in ASB are expected to act appropriately, not only while in the classroom, but also while in our school and our community. Failure to act responsibly at all times may jeopardize your participation in the program. • Lincoln’s Dress Code will be enforced for all members of ASB. Students will be sent to the counseling office for wearing an “appropriate” outfit inappropriately. • Members of ASB may be removed from their position by Ms. Katz with the consent of the principal. Causes for removal shall include, but are not limited to, misconduct resulting in suspension or expulsion, failure to maintain the grade standards, unsatisfactory citizenship as demonstrated through the receipt of any unsatisfactory mark on any given report card. • Any ASB member, who knowingly violates laws regarding drinking or drug use, is involved in gang membership, or takes part in other illegal activities, may be immediately removed from ASB. Acts of hazing or harassment may also result in removal from this program.
Class Expectations
1. An effective meeting requires total involvement, both mentally and physically. 2. Take notes/minutes during meetings. 3. There are school-‐wide expectations for behavior. ASB students need to model them at ALL times. 4. No food or drinks; only bottled water. 5. The following will not be tolerated: insubordination, racist comments, remarks about another student's sexual orientation, or inappropriate behavior, or abuse of membership in ASB. 6. See Ms. Katz after class, during lunch, or after school to discuss your personal needs, problems, disagreements, conflicts, etc. (or email her). 7. There is an appropriate time to speak to Ms. Katz about permission slips, grades, etc. That time is not at the beginning of class. There will be an appointed time for questions during class; save your questions until then. 8. No one is allowed to use the phone during class time without prior permission from Ms. Katz. 9. If you have any health problems that could affect your performance in the leadership class, you should inform Ms. Katz immediately. This information is kept in confidence with the school health office. 10. If you are sick and present in class, you are expected to actively participate in the task at hand by being actively engaged in the activities performing mentally with the group. This is not a time for sleeping or completing your homework – it is a time for ACTION. If need be, you will be sent to the nurse’s office and get dismissed to go home.
Responsibility for School Property 1. 2. 3. 4.
The phone may only be used by permission. Desks are to be left in the order and placement from the beginning of the period. When "sign-‐up" lists are posted, you may sign only your name. The white boards are not for personal messages. Please leave it free for instructional use.
ASB and Other Activities Middle school students need the opportunity to explore and experience a wide variety of activities. At Lincoln, we have a number of students who are a part of school activities and teams. Consider what you do at school to be as important as family, religion, and health. In order to accommodate personal schedules, give as much advanced notice as possible, and we will return the same courtesy. For a student who is involved in other activities, you must prioritize. When in conflict with a calendared ASB event, use the following as a guideline: • Family situations must be of a serious or emergency nature. • Weekend trips, etc. do not qualify. • Religious reasons must be of a sacramental nature such as religious holidays, Confirmation, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, etc. • Health excuses must be of a serious enough nature to warrant an absence. Doctor’s appointments must be made around class and events. The following guidelines have been established to help students when conflicts between activities occur: • Conflicts between a school event and a rehearsal or practice (including school related rehearsals or practices) will be handled individually and must be cleared with Ms. Katz PRIOR to the event. If a conflict arises, it is the student’s responsibility to inform those involved and arrange for any concessions. • Students NOT attending an ASB event (either during or after school) due to any non-‐excused absence will not receive credit for that event, which may adversely affect his/her ASB grade.
Poster/Flyer Maintenance Posters or flyers for a school activity should be advertised at least a week in advanced. • Mondays -‐ take down all old posters and flyers; put up the new. • Tuesdays & Thursdays -‐ check to see the status of your posters… maybe a new position, more tape • Wednesdays & Fridays -‐ work on your posters for the upcoming week
ASB’s Code of Ethics ASB is an integral part of the school’s total educational program. All school activities, curricular and co-‐curricular, in the classroom must be congruent with Lincoln Middle School’s goals and objectives established for the intellectual, physical, social, and moral development of our students. It is within this context that the following Code of Ethics is presented. As a leader, I understand that it is my responsibility to: 1. Place academic achievement as the highest priority. 2. Show respect for students, parents, teachers, and administration, and exhibit proper conduct on and off school grounds. 3. Refrain from the use of profanity, vulgarity, and other offensive language and gestures. 4. Respect all equipment and use it safely and appropriately. 5. Refrain from the use of alcohol, tobacco, illegal and non-‐prescriptive drugs that are not approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration, Surgeon General of the United States, or American Medical Association. 6. Know and follow all school and ASB rules and regulations as they pertain to eligibility and extracurricular participation. ASB students are committed to becoming the best ASB member possible, adhering to six core principles: • Trustworthiness • Respect • Responsibility • Fairness • Caring • Good citizenship ASB’s Code of Ethics applies to all student leaders involved in on campus affiliations. Bullying ASB members may face school consequences, including suspension, if they… • commit sexual harassment • bully or cyber bully another person • cause, threaten to cause or participate in an act of hate violence • engage in harassment, threats or intimidation • terrorist threats against school officials or property A new law authorizes school administrators to suspend or recommend for expulsion students who engage in bullying of either students or school staff If the bullying behavior significantly disrupts the school environment the school shall intervene even if the bullying originated outside of the school environment Bullying includes, but is not limited to, the tormenting of others through: • verbal harassment or intimidation • physical assault or other more subtle methods of coercion such as manipulation and exclusion • Physical aggression • Social aggression • Written aggression • Social manipulation • Psychological intimidation • Physical Intimidation • Sexual and gender harassment • Racial and culture harassment • Religious harassment • Public ridicule • Hazing • Cyber-‐bullying – the use of any type of electronic device and information, such as e-‐ mail, instant messages, text messages, mobile phones, and web sites, used to send or post harmful or hurtful messages or images about an individual or a group. To All ASB Members, You have been selected to be a member of Lincoln’s Student Council, and with this choice comes the responsibility of complying with its discipline. Since ASB is a Service-‐Based Organization, you are expected to contribute positively to this group. Remember that our goal is unity and school spirit. Please know that we will be working towards those two things throughout the school year. Now comes the fun part, the challenging part, the “what did I get myself into” part. Yes, it is now time to get to work. You are going to be expected to work hard, play by the rules, and learn from mistakes and successes. Most importantly, you will be expected to have fun and enjoy this opportunity to represent Lincoln Middle School. One major goal for this year is to unite our school in pride and spirit, while bringing back valued traditions. Unity is possible through inclusive activities, such as lunch activities, canned food drives, school dances, spirit days, cultural celebrations, etc. Each time we begin planning an activity we must ask ourselves: “How does this help create the feeling that ‘We are LMS, We are family’?” As the leaders of Lincoln, we must be united and be willing to take on the challenge of making it a great experience for all involved. Everything we do must be in service to the goal of school unity, spirit, and pride. Perhaps you think that your attendance in Leadership isn't really all that important. Perhaps you think that you're just one person in a very large group and after all, you may think that you don't contribute much. There are so many other people that nobody would even miss little old you. Consider then, the keys of the computer keyboard. One little key missing on the keyboard could not possibly make that much difference in the outcome of the paper, now could it? Actually, it makes quite a big difference doesn't it? In the same manner, when you're not in class and when you're gone, your absence hurts the group and you are missed. You are a member of a team, and you are needed! ASB is different from almost any other class offered at Lincoln because it DEMANDS teamwork. People are depending on you. If the class is not important and not a point of pride for you, then perhaps you might want to re-‐think your enrollment. You cannot reap and enjoy the benefits of a group like ours if you cannot discipline yourself to attend class, meetings, rehearsals, and events. Not only will your lack of commitment to teamwork and participation dramatically affect your grade, it brings the class down. In a class like math, English, or biology, your grade is dependent upon your individual effort. However, if you do not work, it does not affect the person in the desk across the room. In ASB, if you do not do your part and carry your own weight, it affects every person at Lincoln. Being part of ASB at Lincoln is an honor and a privilege. Students with excessive absences and tardies lower the overall group potential. So, be punctual and prepared to cooperate and work. Students are expected to be in their seats when the bell rings.
Document of Understanding and Agreement The handbook outlines and presents the objectives, expectations, content, grading, schedules, and rules of Lincoln Middle School’s Leadership Class. .
