Monday, March 3, 2014 Cecil Sly Families, I want to thank you for partnering with your schools for our staff development days. We will be the first to say that having the kids here each day of the week is our #1 choice. There are many new requirements from our state and federal government, which require training and time to complete processes. Some of those requirements include setting specific goals for instruction based on information from assessments. More than ever before we are really drilling into information and selecting teaching strategies that match student need. This last Friday, every teacher at Cecil Sly met with me to complete mid-year progress meetings. We looked at mid-year student data and asked some very powerful questions about the progress being made. If we are on track, great! If any student was not making progress, we made decisions to change or add in more assistance. This is not only powerful practice, it’s specifically required by the State of Oregon. Senate Bill 290 requires every licensed teacher to craft two powerful goals for their students. They are also required to pick and develop an annual professional goal. We are holding ourselves to the highest degree of accountability. As the year comes to a close in June, we will meet again to examine our progress. We will reflect and ask which instructional strategies gave our students the best advantage. The ones that gave the kids the best leg up will be kept and we will be committed to putting the best new strategies into place. Thank you again for partnering in that process. Your Principal Jim Bates

The week of March 3 is dedicated time to honor our classified school employees. They are involved in every aspect of the school including maintaining our school building and grounds, providing secretarial assistance, preparing meals, providing safe transportation, keeping our facilities clean, assisting in the classroom and providing many other specialized services. These dedicated individuals deserve our recognition and thanks for the awesome job they do here at Cecil Sly. Join us this week as we honor these individuals! Just a reminder… The Kids Clinic located over at Crooked River Elementary is open 5 days a week and include evening hours until 7pm on Thursdays.
