You will have the opportunity to learn how to paint and express with watercolours the feelings you get from the reading of Italian poems and stories...it’s a very unusual way to learn the language and to understand the country from another point of view: hurry up because there are just 12 places available! Our appointment with the Italian cinema continues with Cineclubdante and the film “Pane, amore e fantasia”, a masterpiece created in 1953 by director Luigi Comencini (page 5): this is a big challenge for you! The film is subtitled only in Italian but we’re sure you’ re going to get all the words and shades of meaning thanks to the typical italian gestures. At page 6 you can find a special recipe that Alessandra learnt directly from her mum: what better way is there to celebrate Mother’s day (la festa della mamma)? Follow us! The class will start with the reading of an Italian short story or poetry. Since the images and characters are usually evocative, after the reading we will paint our impressions and feelings using the watercolour technique which is a very satisfying artistic experience even for beginners.

She has taught in Italy as a teacher for children with special needs, in various secondary schools (building design) and she taught Italian in the UK preparing students for GCSE and A level exams. She has gained a vast experience running artistic and therapeutic courses with children and adults.

Come to challenge yourself by watching an Italian movie with Italian subtitles! This is a language class, a fascinating way to improve your Italian watching and talking about the most beautiful movies of il Cinema Italiano. About the film: “Pane, amore e fantasia” by Luigi Comencini, 1953 This is a great classic romantic comedy in which Vittorio De Sica plays the role of a middle-aged marshal of Carabinieri in a remote Italian mountain village in the Centre of Italy. He's anxious to get married, and selects young Gina Lollobrigida (La Bersagliera) as his bride; but she is already in love with another man and she spurns him. With the help of his housemaid, the great Italian actress Tina Pica, he eventually decides to settle for village midwife Annarella. The title comes from a quote of the film in which Vittorio De Sica asks to a farmer what he is eating. The man answers : “bread and dreams!”

La festa della mamma La festa della mamma viene festeggiata in giorni diversi, a seconda della parte del mondo in cui ci si trova. In Italia e in Nuova Zelanda, la ricorrenza cade sempre durante la seconda domenica di maggio quindi, quest’anno, le mamme italiane e neozelandesi verranno festeggiate l’11 maggio. In Italia, di solito i bambini preparano un “lavoretto” e imparano a memoria una filastrocca. Ecco il testo di una canzone italiana molto famosa dedicata alla mamma.

Lo strudel delle Dolomiti, by Alessandra La nostra Alessandra ha imparato questa ricetta proprio da sua mamma e oggi la vuole condividere con voi! Seguite le istruzioni e buon appetito! Filling Peel and slice a few apples, add some sultanas, a few chopped walnuts (or a combination of almonds, hazelnuts and pecans), 5 to 10 cloves (according to taste), 1 stick of cinnamon broken into two pieces, 4 tsp demerara sugar, and the juice of 1 lemon. Pastry Mix 200 g of flour with 50 g of butter (cubed, vegans can use margarine), 2 tsp demerara sugar and 100 ml cold water. Mix well by hand and shape into a ball. Refrigerate for 30 minutes then roll out into a large oval, as thin as you can manage. Spread the apples on top and roll up. Pinch both sides of the strudel and turn them in to resemble a gigantic croissant. Place on a baking tray lined with baking paper and bake at 180°C for almost one hour. The sugary juice that comes out from the pastry is a bit like caramel, but with an apple flavour!

Seminario all’Università di Auckland The Detective as an Historian: The Legacy of the Resistance in Macchiavelli and Guccini’s Crime Series by Barbara Pezzotti (ACIS)

University of Auckland (Arts 1, room 203) on Thursday May 1st at 4pm. . With its stress on legality, culpability and responsibility, a crime novel is a particularly suitable medium for recounting history (Browne and Kreiser Jr. xiv). As a variant of the historical novel, in Georg Luckács’s words, it “offers a truer, more complete, more vivid, and more dynamic reflection of reality than the receptant otherwise possesses” ([1954] 1970 36). It often tells history from a hypocaliptic perspective: that is, a micro-story that illustrates a macro-story or history (Cortellessa 1999). This is exactly what happens in Loriano Macchiavelli and Francesco Guccini’s gialli. In their crime series set in a small village in the Apennines, the two authors re-examine Italy’s recent past. Through the investigations of the sleuth, maresciallo Benedetto Sansovito, into a number of crimes, Macchiavelli and Guccini re-interpret a period of Italian history that goes from the end of the nineteenth century, when Italy was a land of migrants, to the 1970s, which were years characterized by social and political unrest. This article focuses on the representation of Fascism and the Resistance in Sansovito’s series with a particular focus on Tango e gli altri. Romanzo di una raffica, anzi tre (2008), as this book in particular can be considered a highly-conscious response to the climate of historical revisionism that characterized the rise to power of Alleanza Nazionale (born from the ashes of Movimento sociale italiano, the neo-Fascist Party) with Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia in 1994, and its ability to maintain power through Berlusconi’s governments in 2001-2005, 2005-2006 and again in 2008.Thanks to the detective’s enquiry into the past, Macchiavelli and Guccini emphasize the importance of understanding the historical roots of Italy’s frail democracy. By reestablishing historical differences between the Repubblica di Salò and the Resistance, also through the figure of the detective, a former partisan, they fight the instrumental use of ‘revisionist’ theories in a critical period of Italy’s recent history.
