Halloween Happening News: We are still in need of donations as well as people for set-up, overseeing games and clean up. Just remember many hands make light and fast clean up. Remember you will need to bring a bag to collect all your treats in so make it a durable one. hint: pillow cases make great treat bags. Make sure you put your full name on your bag incase it gets set down or misplaced. If you are still in need of ideas of items to bring in for the donations just ask your kids what thing they like the best when they go through their treat bag when they get home from Trick or Treating. Where: McGrath Elementary When: Thursday Oct. 27th Time : 6 - 8 pm
A Big Thank you! McGrath Student Council: Would like to thank everyone for the support with the our first annual pajama drive in co-operation with the Salvation Army, it was a great response and for a great cause.
Fabulous fractions Your child needs to know about fractions for math class, as well as for everything form cooking, to construction, to finance when they grow up. Use these ideas to build everyday fraction skills. Name them Ask your youngster to make fractions from the world around them. You might say, “what fraction of the month has passed?” if the month has 31 days, that’s the whole, and if it’s the 12Th, 12 is the part —-- so 12/31 of the month has gone by, Go back forth with each other, creating fun fractions like “What fraction of your book have you read?” or “What fraction of your socks are striped?” Add them Race to the finish line —-by adding fractions. Have your child draw a number line from 0 to 12, labeling three evenly spaced tick marks (1/4, 1/2, 3/4 ) between each pair of whole numbers. Then they can write 8 fractions on separate note cards (1/4,1/4, 2/4, 2/4, 3/4, 3/4, 4/4, 4/4) and turn them facedown. To play, each person places a token at 0. Take turns picking two cards. Add the fractions shown (say, 1/4 + 2/4 = 3/4), and move your marker by the sum ( from 0 to 3/4). As they move the number line, they work with mixed numbers, too (43/4 + 1/2 = 51/4). Be the first to reach 12 —— exactly!
