These coins are legal tender as provided in The Coinage Act 2011.Rs 10 Coin has been minted to celebrate 125th year of National Archives of India.Rs 5 coins to celebrate 150th anniversary of Allahabad High Court. IOC TO BUILD NEW OIL TERMINAL AT MOTIHARI TO SUPPLY FUEL TO NEPAL: The Indian Oil Corporation has planned to build a new oil terminal at Motihari in Bihar.Its main aim to supply fuel to Nepal from the planned pipeline up to Amlekganj in Nepal.The 69-km MotihariAmlekganj pipeline will be built at a cost of Rs.325 cr. As per the agreement, a new 200 km pipeline would be laid between Patna and Motihari. The fuel supply agreements between India and Nepal have been extended to 5 years. Nepal receives around 2 lakh kilolitres of fuel from IOC every month. SHRI RK PACHNANDA APPOINTED AS DG, ITBP; SHRI RAJIV RAI BHATNAGAR TO BE NEXT DG, CRPF: Mr. R. K. It is helpful in setting up of photovoltaic thermal power plants.The app provides information about the azimuth and elevation angles, and duration of day over different time periods in a year. PAYTM LAUNCHES DIGITAL GOLD, MAKES GOLD INVESTMENT DIGITAL:Paytm launched 'Digital Gold' on its platform to allow customers to buy and sell gold through electronic platform.It is the 1st wealth management product that was launched in partnership with gold refiner MMTC-PAMP. It offers a real-time international pricing mechanism for the customers.To avail the benefit of the gold scheme Consumers need to provide KYC details who are transacting over Rs 20000 through Paytm. WORLD DAY FOR SAFETY AND HEALTH AT WORK: APRIL 28, 2017: World Day for Safety and Health at Work is annually observed on 28 April observed by the International Labour Organization since 2003.Its objective is to create awareness and seek international attention on the magnitude of safety and health problems at work and also to highlight the benefit of creating a safety and health culture to reduce the number of work-related deaths and injuries.2017 Theme for World Day for Safety and Health at Work was Optimize the collection and use of Occupational Safety and Health data.Every day, 6,300 people die as a result of occupational accidents. 317 million accidents occur on the job annually; many of these resulting in extended absences from work. CHHATTISGARH PASSES STATE GST BILL, BECOMES 5TH STATE TO ADOPT TAX REFORM LAW: Chhattisgarh passed Goods and Service Tax Bill on April 28th and become the 5th state in the country after Bihar, Telangana, Jharkhand and Rajasthan.Chhattisgarh CM Raman Singh said the bill has been enacted to implement the concept of one nation, one tax, one market. The arc-shaped bridge will have a height of 359 m above the river bed. 315 km long bridge will connect Kauri (Srinagar) and Bakkal (Katra). Estimated cost of construction is around 1100 cr. Once completed, it will surpass the record of the Beipan river Shuibai railway bridge in China. 3. INDIA TO CLOCK 7.1% GDP THIS YEAR, 7.5% CENT IN 2018: UN REPORT: As per 'The Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific 2017' released by UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, Indian economy is expected to register 7.1% GDP growth in 2017 and 7.5% in 2018. AIIB GRANTS $160 MILLION FOR ANDHRA PRADESH POWER PROJECT: Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank has approved $ 160 million loan for a power project in Andhra Pradesh. The project helps in improving system reliability and also helps in improving the commercial performance of the state's distribution companies. Sherchan had scaled the Everest at the age of 76 in 2008 and recorded his name in the Guinness Book of World Records in 2010 as the oldest climber. 5 years later his record was broken by an 80-year-old Japanese national Yuichiro Miura. Sherchan aimed at reclaiming the crown of oldest climber to ascend the 8,848-meter peak. COUNTRY'S 1ST BIO REFINERY PLANT INAUGURATED IN PUNE: NitinGadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highway inaugurated India's 1st bio refinery plant for renewable fuels and chemicals at Rahu in Pune district of Maharashtra. This plant has been set up by Praj Industries. It can produce 1 million litre of ethanol per annum by processing a variety of agro-residue like rice and wheat straw, cane trash, cotton stalk and corn cobs. With further research and development, pipeline of other renewable fuels and chemicals will also be produced from this technology platform. India's National Policy on Bio fuels has set indicative target of 20% blending of biofuels, both for bio-diesel and bio-ethanol. 29. EDELWEISS TOKIO LAUNCHES INDIA'S FIRST INSURANCE THAT CAN BE BOUGHT AT POS: Edelweiss Tokio Life Insurance has launched India's 1st insurance product that can be bought at a point of sale. The product has been named 'PoSSaralNivesh'. It is the 1st product to be approved by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India's guidelines on point of sale-life insurance products. India has appealed to the International Court of Justice accused Pakistan of outstandingly bad violations of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations. I-T DEPT LAUNCHES E-FACILITY TO LINK PERSON'S AADHAAR WITH PAN: The Income Tax department has launched a new e-facility to link a person's Aadhaar with the Permanent Account Number. It is a mandatory procedure for filing I-T returns. The department's e-filing website – https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in – has created a new link on its homepage making it “easy” to link the two unique identities of an individual. There is no need to login or be registered on e-filing website. This facility can be used by anyone to link their Aadhaar with PAN. The government under the Finance has made it mandatory for taxpayers to quote Aadhaar or enrolment ID of Aadhaar application form for filing of income tax returns (ITR). 3. UNION AGRICULTURE AND FARMERS WELFARE MINISTER LAUNCH E-KRISHI SAMVAD, AN ONLINE INTERFACE: Radha Mohan Singh, Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, has launched e-KrishiSamvad atKrishiBhawan in New Delhi for welfare and development of agricultural stakeholders in India. e-KrishiSamvad is internet-based interface that will provide actionable and effective solutions to the problems faced by farmers and stakeholders in the agriculture sector. This platform is also accessible through mobile phones having internet facility. 4. NATIONAL TECHNOLOGY DAY: – MAY 11, 2017: The National Technology Day 2017 was observed on 11th May, 2017 in India. NEW IIP, WPI SERIES INTRODUCED, SHOW OVERALL BENIGN MACRONUMBERS: New-look Index of Industrial Production and the Wholesale Price Index were unveiled. It has been built on the new series of data and is thereby reflecting a healthier picture of the Indian economy in 2016-17 as compared to the old series. The new series of the IIP has 809 items as compared to 620 items in old series. Items such as cement clinkers, prefabricated concrete blocks, steroids and refined palm oil have been added in the new series, whereas items like calculators colour TV picture tubes, and gutka have been removed. The new series of the WPI has 697 items as compared to 676 items in old series. New vegetables and fruits such as radish, carrot, cucumber, bitter gourd, mosambi, pomegranate, jackfruit, and pear have been added to the list of primary articles. 11. R K MAHAJAN, MAHENDER SINGH APPOINTED CBEC MEMBERS: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved appointment of senior bureaucrats R K Mahajan and Mahender Singh as members in the Central Board of Excise and Customs. 12. AMITABH BACHCHAN APPOINTED WHO GOODWILL AMBASSADOR FOR HEPATITIS: The World Health Organisation appointed Amitabh Bachchan as its goodwill ambassador for hepatitis in South-East Asia region. It aims to boost awareness and intensify action to arrest the epidemic. This is the 1st formal association between WHO and Mr. Bachchan. He had also served as UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for Polio in India. V K Saraswat succeeds former Indian Space Research Organisation Chairman, K Kasturirangan, who completed his term on March 30, 2017. ANTI-DUMPING DUTY IMPOSED ON CERTAIN GLASSES, RADIATORS: Anti-dumping duty imposed on certain glasses from Iran and aluminum radiators from China in order to protect the domestic industry from cheap imports. NEWS ANALYSIS 24TH – 31ST MAY 2017 1. NITI AAYOG HOLDS THE FIRST SAMAVESH MEETING: 1st meeting of the National Steering Group and other knowledge partners was held in NITI Aayog. This meeting was co-chaired by CEO of NITI Aayog- Amitabh Kant and Ratan P Watal – Principal Adviser, NITI Aayog. This meeting is the 1st ever initiative to bring the large number of institutions from diverse domain to deliberate together on the road map for inclusive development in India. 2. ASSAM'S PURNIMA BARMAN & KARNATAKA'S SANJAY GUBBI WIN THE PRESTIGIOUS 'GREEN OSCARS' AWARD: Two wildlife conservationists from India, Sanjay Gubbi of Karnataka and Purnima Barman of Assam are among the six winners of this year's prestigious Whitley Awards, which are popularly referred to as 'Green Oscars'. The winners of Whitley Awards were felicitated at a special ceremony at the Royal Geographic Society in London. The award honors outstanding contribution towards wildlife conservation outside the developed world. 3. HARSH VARDHAN GETS ADDITIONAL CHARGE OF ENVIRONMENT MINISTRY The Minister of Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr. Harsh Vardhan has been given additional charge of the Environment Ministry. Dr Harsh Vardhan, a senior minister in the NarendraModi cabinet, holds the charge of the ministries of earth sciences and science and technology. For a brief period in 2014, He was the Health Minister in the Modi cabinet. 4. WORLD HYPERTENSION DAY 2017: MAY 17, 2017: Every year, 17 May is observed as World Hypertension Day since 2005 to promote public awareness of hypertension and to encourage citizens of all countries to prevent and control this silent killer, the modern epidemic. 2017 theme for the Day was Know Your Numbers with a goal of increasing high blood pressure awareness in all populations around the world. The day is intended to increase awareness of the condition and issues surrounding it. 5. GST COUNCIL FINALISES TAX RATES ON 80-90% GOODS, SERVICES: The Goods and Services Tax Council headed by Union Finance Minister ArunJaitley and comprising representatives of all states has finalised tax rates on 80-90% of goods and services under 4 brackets (5%, 12%, 18% and 28%). Essential items of daily use have been kept in the lowest bracket of 5%. The GST Council also approved 7 set of rules for the Goods and Services Tax regime that will be rolled out from July 1, 2017. GST will replace 16 current levies (7 central taxes and 9 state taxes), consequentially. GST rates on 6 categories of products—gold, bio-diesel, footwear, beedi and cigarettes, textiles and agricultural implements—will be finalised in council's next meeting scheduled to be held in Delhi. 6. INDIA RANKS AT 154, BELOW SRI LANKA AND BANGLADESH, ON HEALTHCARE INDEX: India has ranked 154th among 195 countries on healthcare index in Lancet medical journal's report titled 'Global Burden of Disease'. Performance of countries was assessed for a period of 25 years from 1990-2015, based on death rates from 32 diseases that could be avoided by effective medical care. This study has been funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The Indian healthcare industry has been growing at a phenomenal rate. During 2008-20, it is expected to clock a Compound Annual Growth Rate of 16.5%.The industry size is expected to touch US$ 280 billion by year 2020. 7. ISRO RECEIVES 2014 INDIRA GANDHI PEACE PRIZE: Former PM Manmohan Singh presented the 2014 Indira Gandhi Peace Prize to the Indian Space Research Organisation at a function in New Delhi. The prize was announced in the year 2014 by the jury headed by the Vice President M. Hamid Ansari. The Prize was presented to AS Kiran Kumar – Chairman of ISRO, in presence of Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson of the Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust. 8. PRESIDENT PRANAB MUKHERJEE RECEIVES FIRST COPY OF BOOK 'METAPHYSICS, MORALS AND POLITICS': The President of India Pranab Mukherjee has received the 1st copy of book 'Metaphysics, Morals and Politics' in Kolkata, West Bengal. The book is authored by Professor Amal Kumar Mukhopadhyay. President Mukherjee thesis was published in a book titled The Ethics of Obedience. 9. WORLD AIDS VACCINE DAY: MAY 18, 2017: World AIDS Vaccine Day observed on May 18. The day also known as HIV Vaccine Awareness Day is observed annually. HIV vaccine marks the day by promoting the continued urgent need for a vaccine to prevent HIV infection and AIDS. It is observed to raise awareness for AIDS vaccines, educate communities about HIV prevention. 10.JOINT HADR EXERCISE COMMENCES AT NAVAL STATION KARWAR: The Annual Joint Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Exercise began on 18 May. The exercise is being conducted by Indian Navy's Western Naval Command. It is named as 'KaravaliKarunya'. It involves both professional exchange and actual disaster response mechanisms which is set on a Tsunami disaster scenario. It will help in providing relief in a post-tsunami scenario and work together with armed forces, central government agencies and state government departments. There will also be a demonstration using aircraft, a pollution control ship and survey ships. 11.G20 LABOUR & EMPLOYMENT MINISTERS' MEET HELD IN GERMANY: G20 Labour and Employment Ministers' Meet was held in Bad Neuenahr, Germany from 18-19 May 2017. Germany chaired the G20 Labour and Employment Ministers' Meet, as it currently holds the G20 presidency. The meeting focused on the theme “Towards an Inclusive Future – Shaping the World of Work”. The Indian delegation to G20 Labour and Employment Ministers' Meet in Germany was led by Union Labour Minister BandaruDattatreya. 12.FIRST FLIGHT OF HTT-40 PROTOTYPE-2 SUCCESSFUL: As per the HAL the 1st flight of prototype-two of India's indigenous basic trainer aircraft, Hindustan Turbo Trainer-40 (HTT-40) was successful. It is aimed at being used for the 1st stage training for all flying cadets of the three First flights of HTT-40 prototype-2 successful services. Theme for World Metrology Day 2017 was “Measurements for transport”. This theme was chosen because transport plays an instrumental role in the modern world. Jamsenpa set the world record becoming the first woman climber to make double ascent in five days' time. She is also the 1st Indian woman to scale Mt Everest for the 5th time. Brij Mohan Sharma, popularly known as Breeze Sharma has become the 1st civilian from the Indian Navy to summit Mount Everest. 19.DEVESHWAR, SOUMITRA CHATTERJEE CONFERRED BENGAL'S HIGHEST CIVILIAN AWARD: India's longest serving boss Y.C. Deveshwar and Thespian SoumitraChatterjee have been conferred with the BangaSamman by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. It is the West Bengal's highest civilian award. Two categories of awards are presented as part of BangaSamman – BangaBhushan and BangaBibhushan. This year recipients of BangaBhushan are Bangladeshi singer RezwanaChowdhuryBanya, folk singer Hidmat Fakir, ChapalBhaduri. 20.IN TRIBUTE TO APJ ABDUL KALAM, NASA NAMES NEW SPECIES AFTER HIM: A newly discovered organism found on the International Space Station has been named after APJ Abdul Kalam by NASA. The name of the bacterium is Solibacilluskalamii the species name is after Dr Abdul Kalam and genus name is Solibacillus which is a spore forming bacteria. The filter on which the new bug was found remained on board the International Space Station for 40 months. The new organism which is a form of bacteria has been found only on the International Space Station and has not been found on Earth. 21.INDIA'S FIRST UNDERWATER RAIL TUNNEL COMPLETED AHEAD OF SCHEDULEL: India's first underwater rail tunnel has completed ahead of schedule. Key Highlights: India's first underwater rail tunnel was being constructed under the Hooghly river. In the election which took place on the sidelines of the Sudirman Cup in Gold Coast, PV Sindhu topped the ballot with 129 votes. PV Sindhu, along with Marc Zweibler of Germany and Kristy Gilmour of Scotland will serve a four-year term in this role. 26.GOVERNMENT MAKES 129 'NON-PERFORMING' OFFICERS RETIRE IN PUBLIC INTEREST: According to Union Minister Jitendra Singh, the government has forced 129 government officers to retire for non-performance in the past few months. Key Points: In total 30 officers from Group A and 99 officers from Group B has been forced to retire in the past few months. The government analyzed the service records of over 24,000 Group A officers and 42,251 Group B officers for performance.As per the government sources, the government will further look into the service records of another 34,451 Group A officers and 42,521 Group B officers. The review has been done by the central government to check the performance of its officers. 27.EGYPTIAN OMAR BECOMES FIRST AMPUTEE TO SWIM ACROSS RED SEA'S GULF OF AQABA: Egyptian swimmer Omar Hegazy has become the first amputee to swim across Red Sea's 20 kilometer Aqaba Gulf from Egypt to Jordan. Key Points: Hegazy, a 26 year-old banker who lost his left leg in a motorcycle accident. Aqaba Gulf is a large gulf at the northern tip of the Red Sea.Egyptian Omar becomes first amputee to swim across Red Sea's Gulf of Aqaba. CENTRE BANS SALE OF COWS FOR SLAUGHTER AT ANIMAL MARKETS, BRINGS RESTRICTIONS ON CATTLE TRADE: As per new rules notified by the Environment Ministry, Government has banned the sale of all kinds of cattle for slaughter at animal markets across the country. This new rule has been notified under Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act of 1960. Now onwards only farmland owners will be allowed to trade at animal markets. As per the notification, cattle comprise bulls, bullocks, cows, buffaloes, steers, heifers, calves and camels. 32.2017 NORTH ATLANTIC TREATY ORGANIZATION (NATO) SUMMIT HELD IN BELGIUM: The 28th edition of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit has started in Brussels Belgium on May 24 and 25, 2017. Attracting $62.3 billion FDI inflows in 2016, India remained much ahead of China and the US. FDI inflows in India during 2016 increased by 2% to USD 62.3 billion, deployed across 809 projects. In 2016, global FDI flows gravitated to destinations experiencing the strongest economic growth, whereas destinations going through recession/ slow down saw major decline in FDI inflows. 34.CENTRE AMENDS DEFINITION OF A START-UP: The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) has amended the definition of a Startup. The new definition of Startup is: An entity will be considered as a Start-Up if its turnover is less than Rs 25 crore. Key Points: It is used to co-develop and launch a dual frequency synthetic aperture radar satellite. This earth monitoring satellite is scheduled to be launched in 2021. NASA Administrator Charles Bolden and K.Radhakrishnan, Chairman ISRO, signed two documents to launch the NASA-ISRO satellite mission. The meeting was held in Toronto. According to NASA the purpose of this mission is to observe Earth and establish a pathway for future joint missions for Mars exploration. About NISAR mission, NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) mission is a dual frequency (L and S Band) Radar Imaging Satellite. It is the first big collaboration between NASA and ISRO. This satellite will be the world's most expensive earth imaging satellite. PRESIDENT OF INDIA RECEIVE BOOKS 'MANN KI BAAT: A SOCIAL REVOLUTION ON RADIO' AND 'MARCHING WITH A BILLION – ANALYSING NARENDRA MODI'S GOVERNMENT AT MIDTERM': PM Mann Ki Baat' is a unique initiative of ShriNarendraModi to reach towards masses across the country through the Radio. PM Modi's Mann Ki Baatprogramme was first started on 3rd October 2014. President Pranab Mukherjee has received the first copy of two books 'Mann Ki Baat-A Social Revolution on Radio'. 'Marching with a BillionAnalysingNarendraModi's Government at RashtrapatiBhavan in New Delhi. Marching with a Billion- AnalysingNarendraModi's Government at Mid-term written by UdayMahurkar a journalist. The books have been released by the Speaker of LokSabha, SumitraMahajanat a function in RashtrapatiBhavan. The books subsume a comprehensive, qualitative and academic analysis of programme – the themes, the choice of topics, the salient features. It will describe how this programme has connected with the New India – the youth in particular. 38.MAHARASHTRA GOVT FORMS 'GOOD MORNING SQUAD' TO MONITOR OPEN DEFECATION: The Maharashtra government has decided to form 'good morning' squads to curb open defecation in all villages and districts across the State. The squads will comprise representatives of local bodies, NGOs, self-help groups, students and social workers working in the area of sanitation and cleanliness. 39.INDIA BECOMES 2ND LARGEST STEEL PRODUCER IN THE WORLD: According to the International Stainless Steel Forum in May 2017 India overtook Japan to become the 2nd-largest steel producer in the world in 2016. The data was released by the International Stainless Steel Forum at annual conference in Tokyo, Japan. The top producer of the steel of the world in the year 2016 is China. India's stainless steel production rose to 3.32 million tons for 2016. The data showed a growth of about 9% over 3.0 million tons achieved in 2015. 40.2ND INDIA-OPEC INSTITUTIONAL DIALOGUE HELD IN VIENNA AUSTRIA: DharmendraPradhan – Minister of State (I/C) for Petroleum and Natural Gas, co-chaired the 2nd India-OPEC Institutional Dialogue at the OPEC headquarters in Vienna, Austria. Bilateral issues of mutual interest were also discussed at a delegation level dialogue. 41.ISRO AND NASA COLLABORATE TO BUILD EARTH – IMAGING SATELLITE NISAR: ISRO and NASA will collaborate to build Earth – imaging satellite NISAR. It has launched the world's biggest and most expensive earth imaging satellite. The satellite has been named NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar. It is an L-band 24 centimetre RADAR and S-band 13 centimetre. The satellite will take weekly snapshots of earth, using the two radars. It will provide time lapse images of the motion of tectonic plates, ice sheets and changes in vegetation over land in agriculture and forests. 42.ISRAEL AEROSPACE INDUSTRIES HAS SIGNED A $630 MILLION DEAL WITH THE INDIA: Israel Aerospace Industries has signed a $ 630 million deal with the Indian State-owned aerospace and defense company Bharat Electronics Limited. Israel's Barak 8 long-range surface-to-air missile system was successfully tested aboard an Indian Navy ship. This deal was a part of the Make in India initiative, BEL will be used as the main contractor for the project. 43.UNION HOME MINISTER RELEASES THE BOOK 'INDIA 2017 YEARBOOK' AUTHORED BY RAJIVMEHRISHI: Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has released the book 'India 2017 Yearbook'. It is authored by the Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi. The book was published by the McGraw Hill Education India. The book will help for gaining comprehensive knowledge of Indian history, economy, social fabric and current affairs.
