NEWS ANALYSIS 1ST– 7TH APRIL 2017 1. HP CM VIRBHADRA SINGH LAUNCHED LED LIGHTS, ENERGY SAVING FANS DISTRIBUTION SCHEMESS: The CM of Himachal Pradesh Virbhadra Singh officially launched the LED Lights, Energy Saving Fans Distribution scheme. As the part of the scheme, LED tube lights and energy-efficient fans are distributed to promote energy saving.The distribution of LED tube lights and energy saving fans is carried out under Unnat Jeevan by Affordable LEDs and Appliances for All scheme. 2. CENTRE TO BUILD 1 CR HOUSES UNDER PMAY-G BY 2019: In a written reply to question raised in Lok Sabha, Ram Kripal Yadav – Minister of State for Rural Development mentioned that Central Govt. has approved the construction of 1 cr houses under Pradhan Mantri Awaas YojanaGrameen with the financial outlay of Rs 81,975 cr during the period of 2016-17 to 2018-19.This decision is a part of Govt. efforts to achieve 'Housing For All by 2022' mission set by PM Modi.This approval to build 1 cr houses under PMAY-G by 2019 constitutes the first phase of action plan. 3. IIT MADRAS SIGNS MOU WITH INDIAN ARMY TO ENHANCE CRITICAL TECHNOLOGICAL AREAS: The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Indian Army to address the technological gap in the armed forces.The MoU was signed between IITM Director Bhaskar Ramamurthi and Deputy Chief of Army Staff (P&S) Lt. Gen. Subrata Saha.The MoU provides a platform to institutions like IITs to closely work with the army officials to identify the critical gap in technological areas in army so as to enhance them.As per the MoU, Indian Army will sponsor 4 officers for doctoral programmes as well as 15 officers for 5-day Technology Development Programme on a biannual basis.' 4. INDIA PRIDE AWARD' – INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT WON BY AAI AND BEST PERFORMANCE WON BY NTPC: Airports Authority of India was awarded with Dainik Bhaskar's India Pride Awards 2016 -17 for “Excellence in Infrastructure Development” in the category of Public Sector Undertaking. In addition to that, National Thermal Power Corporation Limited also won the India Pride Awards 2016 -17 for “Excellence in Performance in the Power Sector” in the category of Public Sector Undertaking.Both the awards were presented by Union Minister of Communications (I/C) Manoj Sinha in New Delhi in the presence of Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways. 5. INDIA SIGNS FIRST LOAN AGREEMENT WITH NEW DEVELOPMENT BANK: The Loan Agreement for New Development Bank financing of US$ 350 Million for Development and Upgradation of Major District Roads Project in Madhya Pradesh was signed between Government of India and the New Development Bank.This is the 1st Loan Agreement for NDB assisted project in India. The objective of the Project is upgradation of major district roads in Madhya Pradesh to improve connectivity of the interior areas of the state with the national and state highway networks. The project implementation is 5 years. 6. RAIL MINISTER SURESH PRABHU RELEASES BOOK TITLED “INDIAN RAILWAY- THE WEAVING OF ANATIONAL TAPESTRY”: A book on the history of Indian Railways titled “Indian Railway-The weaving of a National Tapestry” was inaugurated by the Union Minister of Railways, Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu.The book has been jointly authored by Shri Bibek Debroy (Member, NITI Aayog), Shri Sanjay Chadha (Joint Secretary, Ministry of Commerce) & Ms. Vidya Krishnamurthi.The book has been written with the theme Historical Development of Railways in India.It covers the early Indian Railway life from 1830-1947. To make it interesting, the authors have written the book in story telling manner. 7. INDIA BECOMES ASSOCIATE MEMBER OF INTERNATIONAL ENERGY AGENCY: India, the world's 3rd-largest oil consumer has now joined International Energy Agency as an associate member. India's entry into this elite energy group was jointly announced by Mr. Fatih Birol, IEA executive director, Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Mr. Dharmendra Pradhan and Minister of State (I/C) for Power, Coal, New and Renewable Energy and Mines, Mr. Piyush Goyal.With India's inclusion, IEA now has 70% of world's energy consumption under its ambit. 8. CHHATTISGARH GOVERNMENT IMPLEMENTS 7TH PAY COMMISSION FOR STATE EMPLOYEES FROM APRIL 2017The state government of Chhattisgarh has announced to implement the 7th Central Pay Commission for the state government employees from April 1, 2017, the beginning of new financial year.The announcement of the 7th pay commission was made by Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Raman Singh.The implementation is expected to benefit 2.5 lakh state government employees with hiked payment.Haryana was the 1st state to implement the 7th Central Pay Commission to give the benefit of hiked pay to its employees with effect from January 1, 2016.The state government also announced to increase the salary of managers of Primary Minor Forest Produce Cooperative Societies by 25%. Thus it would become Rs 12,500 per month from existing Rs. 10,000 per month.Among other things, Prabandhak Kalyan Nidhi was also announced to be set up for them and their families. 9. TURKEY CONCLUDES MILITARY OPERATION “EUPHRATES SHIELD” IN NORTHERN SYRIA: The military operation under the name “Euphrates Shield” undertaken by the Turkish troops in northern Syria about 7 months ago for national security, finally concluded on March 29.The announcement regarding this was made by Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey's President.The PM of Turkey, Binali Yildirim, has said that, though the operations was completed but in future many more such operations are likely to be undertaken with different names. 10. GOVERNMENT LAUNCHED TWO MOBILE APPS- ECHALLAN AND MPARIVAHAN:The government has launched 2 mobile apps, echallan and mParivahan, that provide access to various services and information, and enable citizens to report any traffic violation or road accident. 'mParivahan' is an empowering app for the citizen which provides access to various services, information and utilities related to the transport sector.'eChallan' is an integrated enforcement solution to manage traffic violations. 11. FIRST RECYCLED ROCKET LAUNCHED AND RETRIEVED AFTER SUCCESSFUL MISSION BY SPACEX:Space Exploration Technologies Corporation successfully launched it Falcon 9 from space launch complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center, Florida and retrieved it on March 30. The rocket was used to launch SES communications satellite into space.Falcon 9 rocket used a booster that had previously flown cargo to the astronauts living at the International Space Station which makes it as the 1st ever recycled rocket sent by SpaceX. ' 13. RASHTRIYA VAYOSHRI YOJANA' LAUNCHED IN NELLORE, ANDHRA PRADESH:Mr. Thaawarchand Gehlot, Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment launched, 1st of its kind “Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana” in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh aimed to make life comfortable for senior citizens of India.The scheme has been launched for providing Physical Aids and Assisted-living Devices to Senior Citizens belonging to Below Poverty Line category who suffer from age related problems viz. hearing impairment, dental problems, low vision etc.This scheme was proposed in Union Budget 2015-16 and is fully funded by Central Government. Money required to run this scheme will be drawn from Senior Citizens' Welfare Fund. 14. GOVT LOWERS INTEREST RATES ON SMALL SAVING SCHEMES LIKE PPF, KVP AND SUKANYA SAMRIDDHI YOJANA BY 0.1% FOR APRILJUNE QUARTER:Finance Ministry has notified the reduction in interest rates on Small Saving Schemes for April-June 2017 quarter by 10 basis points (0.1%) as compared to Jan-Mar 2017 quarter.This move is in line with the Govt.'s practice of recalibrating the rates on quarterly basis, which is being followed since April 2016.While announcing this revision in interest rates, Finance Ministr y added that rates of small saving schemes would be aligned with government bond yields. 15. MYANMAR BECOMES THE 7TH FORMAL MEMBER OF SASEC:South Asia Sub-regional Economic Cooperation program of Asian Development Bank accepts Myanmar as its 7th member in 2017.The SASEC program of ADB was formed in response to the request made by Bhutan, Bangladesh, India and Nepal to assist their economic co-operations.Maldives and Sri Lanka joined the sub-regional group in 2014.The SASEC program was formed in 2001 to enhance project-based partnership and to promote regional prosperity by improving cross-border connectivity between the member countries.The member countries are Bangladesh, Maldives, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Nepal.Headquartered in Manila, Philippines, Asian Development Bank serves as the Secretariat for the SASEC member countries. 16. 82ND ESTABLISHMENT DAY OF RBI, 1ST APRIL 2017: Having commenced operations from 1st April 1935, India's central bank, Reserve Bank of India celebrated 82nd Establishment Day on 1st April 2017.Establishment of RBI was recommended by Hilton Young Commission. RBI functions in accordance with provisions laid out in Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934. 17. OPERATION OF KUDANKULAM NUCLEAR POWER PLANT 2ND UNIT STARTED SUCCESSFULLY: 1,000 MW Atomic Power Reactor has begun its 1 year period of warranty operation at Kundankulam Nuclear Power Project in Tamil Nadu. This was the 2nd unit to be successfully launched for commercial operation out of 4 units. The information was announced by the Russian builders.:As per the statement given by staterun nuclear energy corporation ASE Group, the Unit 2 of the KNPP is under the warranty of its general designer and the suppliers of equipment from Russia.Kundankulam Nuclear Power Project is the single largest nuclear power station in India, situated in Kundankulam in the Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu. 18. ANDHRA PRADESH CM SELECTED FOR US INDIA BUSINESS COUNCIL AWARD: N Chandrababu Naidu, CM of Andhra Pradesh has been selected for the US India Business Council award. The award is to be presented at the 2nd Annual West Coast Summit to be held in Menlo Park, California.The award is to be presented under the category, 'Transformative Chief Minister' of India by USIBC. Aruna Sundararajan would also receive 'Transformative Leadership' Award at the Summit. 19. RADHAMOHAN SINGH INAUGURATED INTERNATIONAL CENTER FOR FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE: India's 1st International Centre for Foot and Mouth Disease has been inaugurated by Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh at Argul near Bhubaneswar in Odisha.This centre will play a key role in protecting livestock from Foot-and-Mouth Disease Virus.Construction of ICFMD started in April 2014. The estimated cost has been Rs. 450 cr. Indian Council of Agricultural Research has funded the establishment cost. 100 acres of land for the centre has been provided by Odisha State Govt. 20. MIZORAM BECOMES 27TH STATE TO JOIN UDAY SCHEME: The Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Government of India and Mizoram under the scheme Ujwal DISCOM Assurance Yojana. The agreement was signed for operational improvement of the State's Power Distribution Department.By this agreement Mizoram would get an overall net benefit of approximately Rs.198 cr by participating in UDAY.This benefit is achieved in the way of cheaper funds, reduction in Aggregate Technical and Commercial and transmission losses and interventions in energy efficiency. 21. 19TH COMMONWEALTH FORESTRY CONFERENCE TO BEGIN IN UTTARAKHAND TODAYl: 19th Commonwealth Forestry Conference 2017 will begin today at Forest Research Institute in Dehradun, Uttarakhand.Dr. K.K. Paul, Uttarakhand Governor will inaugurate the 19th Commonwealth Forestry Conference at the FRI in Dehradun.The 5-day conference is being organized on the theme 'Forests for Prosperity and Posterity'. 3

RAJIV KUMAR CHANDER APPOINTED AS PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE TO GENEVA UN OFFICES FROM INDIA: Rajiv Kumar Chander, who is from 1983 batch Indian Foreign Service officer has been appointed the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of India to the UN offices in Geneva.Rajiv will succeed Ajit Kumar, who is from 1979 batch Indian Foreign Service at the Geneva office in May, 2017. Prior to this, Chander served as Deputy Permanent Representative in the Geneva office, Chander also served as India's Ambassador to Ukraine. At present he is the Consul General in Vancouver, Canada. 23. NDB INVESTS $1.5 BILLION IN 7 PROJECTS IN 2 YEARS OF OPERATION: The BRICS-backed New Development Bank has invested in seven projects totaling $1.5 billion in about 2 years of its operation. NDB began operations in July 2015. 7 projects have been done so far which aggregate around $1.5 billion. 6 of them are in the renewable energy sector and one in transport financing.The New Development Bank was created with an objective of financing infrastructure and sustainable development projects in BRICS and other emerging economies and developing countries. 24. WORLD AUTISM AWARENESS DAY: APRIL 2,2017: World autism Awareness Day is observed on 2nd April every year by United Nations member countries to raise awareness about autism and problems faced by people suffering from it.World Autism Awareness Day Theme for this year was 'Toward Autonomy and Self-Determination'The National Trust, a statutory body functioning under Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, has organised a National Conference on Autism on 3rd April 2017 in New Delhi. Mr. Thaawarchand Gehlot ,Minister of Social Justice & Empowerment, will inaugurate the conference. 25. FIRST BIO-GAS BUS WITH FLAT RE 1 FARE INAUGURATED IN KOLKATA: Phoenix India Research and Development Group in Kolkata have designed a bus that will run on biogas produced from cow dung.The company has tied-up with Ashok Leyland to manufacture the bus. The 1st bus will be flagged off on April 7 and will run between Ultadanga in the First bio-gas bus with flat Re 1 fare inaugurated in Kolkatanorth and Garia in the south in Kolkata. 26. MEGA-CONFERENCE OF WORLD PARLIAMENTARIANS HOSTED BY BANGLADESH: The 136th Mega-Conference of World Parliamentarians has begun in Dhaka. The conference was inaugurated by PM of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina. She will also release a commemorative postage stamp and launch Inter-Parliamentary Union web television.The main focus of this conference was to provide ways and means to end political and economic inequality for upholding democracy and human rights. The mega-conference was organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad.Nobel Peace Prize laureate Kailash Satyarthi was the keynote speaker during the opening session of the debates.The 137th conference is to be held at St. Petersburg, Russia on 14-18 October 2017. 27. TAX EVASION OVER RS 5 CR IS A NON-BAILABLE OFFENCE UNDER GST REGIME.: The Central government has decided to make tax evasion of over Rs 5 cr under the proposed Goods and Services Tax regime as a non-bailable offence.Earlier, the tax evasion of over Rs 2.5 cr was proposed by the Goods and Services Tax regime.This was mentioned in the Central GST Bill as, “if the offences relating to taxable goods and/or services where the amount of tax evaded exceeds Rs 5 cr, it shall be treated as cognizable and non-bailable”.Cognizable offence. 28. DAWIT ISAAK TO RECEIVE UNESCO/GUILLERMO CANO WORLD PRESS FREEDOM PRIZE, 2017: An imprisoned Eritrean-Swedish journalist, Dawit Isaak has been chosen for the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize 2017 dedicated to promoting press freedom. Dawit Isaak is a Swedish-Eritrean playwright, journalist and writer.In 2016 it was won by Khadija Ismayilova of Azerbaijan. 29. VIPUL TAKES CHARGE AS NEW CONSUL GENERAL OF DUBAI: Diplomat Vipul, a 1998 batch Indian Foreign Service officer succeeded Anurag Bhushan and took charge as the new Consul General of Dubai.Prior to this, he was working at the office of External Affairs Minister of India, Sushma Swaraj.He had also served at the India's diplomatic missions in Sri Lanka and Egypt to bring peace among two nations. 30. P V SINDHU WON WOMEN'S SINGLES CHAMPION OF INDIA SUPER SERIES TOURNAMENT: Rio Olympics silver medalist P V Sindhu won championship in India Super Series tournament.She defeated the Olympic champion Carolina Marin from Spain. This was her 2nd Super-series title win.The men's championship title was won by Viktor Axelsen from Denmark. He defeated Chou Tien-Chen from Taiwan. 31. GOVERNMENT SETS UP NATIONAL BOARD FOR ELECTRIC MOBILITY: To promote electric mobility and manufacturing of electric/hybrid vehicles and their components, Central Government constituted National Board for Electric Mobility.Its Chairperson is the Secretary of Department of Heavy Industry.Members are Senior Bureaucrats including Secretaries in the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Power and Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas. 32. SOUTH ASIA SUBREGIONAL ECONOMIC COOPERATION FINANCE MINISTERS' MEETING HELD IN NEW DELHI: South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation Finance Ministers' Meeting held in New Delhii. Mr. Arun Jaitley, Union Finance Minister chaired the South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation Finance Ministers' Meeting at Taj Palace Hotel, New Delhi. Along with Finance Ministers from Bangladesh, India, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Myanmar and Sri Lanka, officials from Asian Development Bank were also present.From this meeting, Myanmar has become the 7th nation to join SASEC as a member country. 33. MALAYSIAN PRIME MINISTER MOHD NAJIB TUN RAZAK'S 5 DAY VISIT TO INDIA: Mohd Najib Tun Razak, the PM of Malaysia was on an official visit to India for 5 days.Seven MoUs that were signed in presence of Malaysian PM Mohd Najib Tun Razak and Indian PM Narendra Modi in New Delhi.Out of the 7 MoUs signed between Malaysia and India, the most significant was the one between Andhra Pradesh Economic Development Board and MIGHT Technology Nurturing Sdn. Bhd for implementation of 4th Generation Technology Park in Andhra Pradesh. 34. INDIAN ARMY CHIEF CONFERRED WITH NEPAL ARMY HONORARY TITLE IN KATHMANDU: General Bipin Rawat, the Chief of Army Staff has visited Nepal and Bangladesh on his first foreign visit.On his visit to Nepal, the Army Chief was presented with Honorary General of the Indian Army Chief conferred with Nepal Army honorary title in KathmanduNepalese Army title by the President of Nepal.When General Rajendra Chettri, Chief of Army Staff of Nepalese Army visited India, he was presented with Honorary General of the Indian Army.The main aim of his visit is to strengthen India's defense cooperation. 36. NEW RS 200 DENOMINATED NOTES PROPOSAL CLEARED BY RBI: India's central bank, the Reserve Bank of India has cleared a proposal to introduce new currency notes of Rs 200.The proposal was cleared during the RBI board meeting held in March. The information was passed by officials from RBI.The process of producing the Rs 200 notes will begin after June, if the central government officially approves the new denomination.The move was made to reduce the cash crunch after demonetization and Rs 200 will be the 2nd new denomination after Rs 2000.As per RBI governor Urjit Patel, 9.2 lakh cr worth new notes were introduced into the economy after demonetization. 37. DGP GEETHA JOHRI: GUJARAT'S FIRST WOMAN POLICE CHIEF: Director General of Police Geetha Johri was appointed as Police Chief (incharge) of Gujarat. By this, Johari has become the 1st woman IPS officer to be appointed as the Police Chief in Gujarat.The minister of state for home Pradeepsinh Jadeja officially announced the appointment of Johri.Johri had replaced PP Pandey, who resigned as the DGP after his appointment was challenged by former Police Julio Riberio in the Supreme Court.Johri was posted as managing director, Gujarat Police Housing Corporation, Gandhinagar before this appointment. 38. INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR MINE AWARENESS AND ASSISTANCE IN MINE ACTION: APRIL 4, 2017: The International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action was celebrated on April 4.The theme of this year was “Needs driven. People Centered”The United Nations Mine Action Service has been serving for past 20 years to save lives, to facilitate deployment of UN missions and the delivery of humanitarian assistance and to protect civilians.The North Atlantic Treaty Organization marked the International Day for Mine Awareness to highlight the deadly threat that mines pose to civilians ' lives and nations' development. 39. GADKARI ANNOUNCES FIRST EXPRESS HIGHWAY PROJECT RS.40000 CR IN NORTHEAST: Shri Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways and Shipping, has announced the first North East Express Highway project at the closing ceremony of the 'Namami Brahmaputra' festival.This 1300 Km highway project will be implemented with an outlay of Rs 40,000 cr in Assam.The National Highways Authority of India, Assam government and the Inland Waterways of India have signed a tripartite agreement to construct the highway in Assam along the banks of Brahmaputra. 40. INDIA'S IS THE WORLD'S 7TH LARGEST TOURISM ECONOMY IN TERMS OF GDP: WTTC: According to a new report released by World Travel and Tourism Council, India's travel and tourism sector ranks 7th in the world in terms of its total contribution to the country's Gross Domestic Product.WTTC has forecasted 7% growth for the sector in 2017. Visitor exports are expected to grow by 5.4% in 2017. 41. JAPAN OFFICIALLY RECOGNISES BITCOIN AS CURRENCY FROM APRIL 2017: The currency of the Internet, Biticoin and other digital currencies have recognised as a payment method by Japan with effect from its new fiscal year.It was recognised under new banking law of Japan but it is not a legally-recognized currency.Bitcoin exchanges will come under additional regulatory scrutiny. They will be required to comply with strict anti-money laundering and Know Your Customer requirements, along with annual audits. Use of Bitcoin, other virtual currencies not authorised by RBI, says Govt.Financial institution can make Bitcoin exchange after registered with the government with the minimum capital of 10 million yen. 42. The 1st bench, comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana, also directed TNUSRB to include trans genders as a “third category” by the next recruitment process is carried out. 43. PM MODI LAYS THE FOUNDATION STONE OF A MULTI-MODAL TERMINAL ON RIVER GANGA AT SAHIBGANJ IN JHARKHAND: PM Narendra Modi is on an official visit to Jharkhand to lays the Foundation Stone of a Multi-Modal Terminal on River Ganga at Sahibganj district in Jharkhand. In a series of tweets, PM Modi mentioned that construction of Sahibganj multi-modal terminal at Sahibganj will create business and job opportunities in Jharkhand and will particularly benefit people in rural areas. PM Modi also laid the foundation stone of one of the longest river bridges on River Ganga that will connect Sahibganj to Katihar district of Bihar. This 5.8 km long 4-lane bridge will be built by National Highways Authority of India at an estimated cost of Rs 2,266 cr. PM Modi also inaugurate the Govindpur-Jamtara-Dumka-Sahebganj Highway, during his visit to Jharkhand. JHARGRAM BLOOMS AS 22ND DISTRICT IN WEST BENGAL: West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee declared Jhargram as the 22nd district of Bengal and it has been bifurcated from West Midnapore. Jhargram, a part of the Jangalmahal area, Blooms as 22nd District in West Bengal. Jhargram has a population of more than 11.37 lakh. It has 4 Assembly constituencies such as Jhargram, Nayagram, Gopiballavpur and Binpur. Arjun was appointed as Jhargram district magistrate. RBI MONETARY POLICY REVIEW: RBI KEEPS REPO RATE UNCHANGED AT 6.25%, RAISES REVERSE REPO RATE TO 6%: On 6th April, Reserve Bank of India has announced 1st Bi-Monthly Monetary Policy Statement for financial year 2017-18. This is the 3rd straight meeting wherein the Policy Repo Rate has been kept unchanged. The policy rates and reserve ratios are as follows: Repo Rate 6 . 2 5 % Unchanged – since 4th October 2016, Reverse Repo Rate - 6.00% Hiked by 25 basis points. MSF Rate - 6.50% Reduced by 25 basis points. Bank Rate - 6.50% Reduced by 25 basis points. Cash Reserve Ratio 4.00% Unchanged – since 9th February 2013. Statutory Liquidity Ratio - 20.50% effective from 1st January 2017. YOKOYAMA REPLACES M TERESA AS DIRECTOR OF INDIA RESIDENT MISSION OF ASIAN DEVELOPMENT BANK: Kenichi Yokoyama appointed as the new Country Director of India Resident Mission of the Asian Development Bank. Yokoyama replaces M Teresa Kho and now appointed as Deputy Director General of ADB's East Asia Department in Manila. Yokoyama has good working experience with the government of Japan in the fields of agriculture, forestry and fisheries. Yokoyama joined ADB in 1999 and also worked for its operations in South Asia. He contributed to the expansion of relevant program in the sector in India, Bangladesh and Nepal and is considered as one of the most trusted experts in water resources management and project implementation in ADB. INTERNATIONAL DAY OF SPORT FOR DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE: APRIL 7 2017: The United Nation proclaimed 6th April as International Day of Sport for Development and Peace. The day also coincide with the 1st modern Olympic Games in International Day of Sport for Development and PeaceAthens in 1896. Its objective is to recognize the power of sport in promoting peace and its ability to inspire. On the occasion of the IDSDP, FIBA's Foundation launched a campaign to raise awareness about the role of sport in social development and peace building. DEENDAYAL RASOI YOJANA LAUNCHED IN 49 DISTRICTS OF MP: Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan has launched subsidized meal scheme at Rs.5 in Gwalior. This scheme helps people to get economical nutritious and good quality food under the Deendayal Rasoi Yojana at cheaper rates. The scheme includes 49 districts in 1st phase. Breakfast will be served at Rs 5 and lunch will be served at Rs.8. All these arrangements will be done by Level Coordination and Monitoring Commiittee in which they will monitor all aspects of scheme and at least 2000 people will serve every day. The budget of this scheme is Rs 10 cr and it will be funded by Corporate Sector under Corporate Social Responsibility. SECTION 139AA: AADHAAR TO BE MANDATORY FOR IT RETURNS, GETTING PAN FROM JULY 1: The government is making Aadhaar mandatory for filing income tax returns as well as to getting PAN card through amendments to the finance bill 2017. INDIA RANKED 40TH IN WEF'S GLOBAL TRAVEL AND TOURISM RANKING: India has ranked 40th out of 136 countries on Global Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2017 published by World Economic Forum. This marks a commendable jump of 12 spots as compared to previous year's rank. Spain is at 1st place followed by France and Germany. Japan and United Kingdom are at 4th and 5th place. 11. INDIA AND ADB SIGN $175 MILLION LOAN AGREEMENT TO HELP IMPROVE SOLAR TRANSMISSION SYSTEM: The Government of India and the Asian Development Bank has signed a $175 million loan agreement to support construction of high voltage transmission systems. The project will improve the capacity and efficiency of interstate transmission networks, ADB clears $ 300 million loan for upgradation of UP Roads 400 km particularly in transmitting the electricity generated from the new solar parks to the national grid. The loan will be given to the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited. Apart from the mass departure of 2,500 megawatts of power from solar parks in Bhadla, Rajasthan, and 700 MW from Banaskantha, Gujarat, POWERGRID is also including 2 additional subprojects that will increase solar power generation by 4.2 gigawatt and lessen carbon emissions by over 7 million tons every year. The project will enable transmission of surplus solar energy from States with surplus power to power deficit States.

12. INDIA'S GROWTH ACCELERATE TO 7.4% IN 2017-2018: India recorded a growth rate of 7.4% in this fiscal year and it expects to be 7.6% in the next financial year. Despite the effect demonization India's growth grew from 1% to 7.4%. India is the fastest growing economy ahead of China mentioned by the ASIAN DEVELOPMENT BANK. Over the last few years India has taken a very crucial initiative like GOODS AND SERVICE TAX and FDI regime to improve our business growth in an economy. ADB also expects India's Consumer Price Inflation to 5.2% in FY18 and to 5.4% in FY19.

PREM BAHADUR RESMI MAGAR POSTHUMOUSLY CONFERRED KIRTI CHAKRA: Lance Havildar Prem Bahadur Resmi Magar of Gorkha Rifles has been conferred with Kirti Chakra by President Pranab Mukherjee at the defence investiture ceremony in New Delhi. The second highest peacetime gallantry award presented to the late Lance Havildar for his action in Jammu and Kashmir operation on June 16. Other awards includes: 13 Shaurya Chakras (4 posthumous). 45 Distinguished Service medals include 15 Param Vishisht Seva Medals, 28 Ati Vishisht Seva Medals, 2 Uttam Yudh Seva Medals. 14. CENTRE KICKS OFF PROGRAMME ON CYBER PHYSICAL SYSTEMS: The Department of Science and Technology under Union Ministry of Science and Technology has initiated a Cyber Physical Systems programme. This programme has a financial outlay of Rs. 3000 cr, out of which Rs. 100 cr have been earmarked in the current financial year itself. K.R. Murli Mohan is the head of the CPS programme at DST. The initial action in this programme will take place at some of the Indian Institutes of Technology. 15. ISRO AND INDIAN AGRICULTURE MINISTRY TEAM UP TO GEO-TAG AGRICULTURAL ASSETS: The Government is going to geo-tag all the agricultural assets in the country for better land and crop management. Radha Mohan Singh, Union Agriculture Minister is going to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with National Remote Sensing Agency, ISRO, for geo-tagging the agriculture land created under Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojna in the country. Geo-tagging used to provide us a real time status of agricultural assets, which helps to monitoring, utilizing and also useful in formulating schemes for development in the agricultural sector. 16. NBA LAUNCHES INDIA'S FIRST BASKETBALL SCHOOL IN MUMBAI: US based National Basketball Associationhas launched its first basketball school in Mumbai, India. More schools will be opened in India and around the world in this year. The school was opened as part of a multi-year agreement with India on Track. 17. WORLD HEALTH DAY OBSERVED WITH THEME 'DEPRESSION: LET'S TALK': Every year World Health day is observed on 7th April since 1950 to celebrate the founding day of World Health Organization in 1948. 2017 campaign is based on depression. This year theme of World Health Day was 'Depression: Let's Talk'. Depression is one of the causes of ill health and disability. Nearly 86 million people are affected by depression in South-East Asian countries. One in 4 children in the age group of 13-15 years in India suffers from depression. 18. PRANAB MUKHERJEE INAUGURATES FIRST NIMCARE WORLD HEALTH DAY SUMMIT 2017: President Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated the first NIMCARE World Health Day Summit 2017 in New Delhi. 'Unite for a Healthy Mind' was chosen as the slogan of the summit. He also launched eCAP & SOL's Telepsychiatry application for the rural and urban population in need of mental health consultation. 19. CENTER DECLARES KERALA DROUGHT-HIT, ANNOUNCES RS. 24000 CR RELIEF TO 8 STATES: The union government declared Kerala as a drought hit state along with 7 other states and announced a drought relief package of Rs 24000 cr to drought affected areas as well. Government has allowed 50 additional working days under The NATIONAL RURAL EMPLOYMENT GURANTEE SCHEME. 7 states which are included along with Kerala are Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttarkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. 20. MALALA YOUSAFZAI TO BECOME THE YOUNGEST UN MESSENGER OF PEACE: Malala Yousafzai, Nobel Peace Prize winner from Pakistan, is set to become the United Nations' youngest-ever 'Messenger of Peace'. INDIA MONGOLIA MILITARY EXERCISE KICKS OFF IN MIZORAM: India- Mongolia military exercise training has started at Vairengte in Mizoram. Mangolian Army is represented by 9 officers and 36 soldiers of the elite 084 Special Forces Task Battalion while Indian contingent comprises 3 officers 4 Junior Commissioned officers and 39 soldiers of Jammu and Kashmir Rifles. It is a 14 day exercise which continues till 18th April. Christened “Exercise Nomadic Elephant- XII” aimed at training troops in operations like counter-terrorism and counter insurgency. The joint exercise will help in boosting defence co-operation and military relations between the two nations. Training includes important aspects like convoy protection, room intervention drills; ambush/counter-ambush drills terrorist operations. AJIT KUMAR SRIVASTAVA & SHABRI BHATTASALI NEW CBDT MEMBER: Shabri Bhattsali and Ajit Kumar Srivastava are appointed as members of Cental Board Of Direct Taxes. The role of CBDT is to provide inputs for policy and planning of direct taxes in the country. It functions like Financial Action Task Force which deals in Money laundering and Black money. CENTRE RELEASES NEARLY 23500 CR TO STATES UNDER MGNREGS: Ministry of Rural development has released nearly 23,500 cr rupees to the States under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. The Govt. of India emphasized solely on Water Conservation and Water Management works under MGNREGS. A list of 2264 water-stressed Blocks prepared by Ministry of Water resources. These blocks are located in 324 districts of 21 states. The ministry has suggested the states to ensure not less than 65% expenditure on Natural Resource Management Activities. It is to be ensured in drought regions and in districts, blocks where inadequate rainfall is there. LOK SABHA PASSES 123RD CONSTITUTION AMENDMENT BILL 2017: Lok Sabha passed 123rd Constitution Amendment Bill, 2017 with 360 members voting in favour and 2 members voting against it. This amendment bill seeks to grant constitutional status to National Commission for Socially and Educationally Backward Classes. The amendment bill was introduced in Lok Sabha by Thaawarchand Gehlot, Union Social Justice and Empowerment Minister. The amendment bill seeks to insert Article 338B in the Indian Constitution. This article will list out the structure and functions of the proposed National Commission for Socially and Educationally Backward Classes. GOVERNMENT SETS UP INTER-MINISTERIAL PANEL TO MONITOR UDAN: The Government has set up an inter-ministerial committee to monitor the regional air connectivity scheme UDAN which seeks to make flying affordable by connecting unserved and under-served airports. UDAN- Ude DeshKa Aam Nagrik. The Inter-Ministerial Monitoring-cum-coordination Committee would be responsible for Regional Connectivity Scheme overall monitoring of the schemes. The panel would be responsible for coordination among the stakeholders including state government. The panel members include Bureau of Civil aviation security, Airport Authority of India chairman and Representatives from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. In the flights operated under RCS around 50% of the seats would have afire cap Rs2500 per seat/hour. Other benefits include zero airport charges for the operators and 3 years restricted on the routes.

38. PARLIAMENT PASSES CONSTITUTION (SC) ORDER (AMENDMENT) BILL 2017: The Parliament has passed the Constitution (Schedule Castes) Order (Amendment) Bill 2017. It was already passed by LokSabha in March 2017. The Bill seeks to amends the constitution (Schedule Castes) order, 1950 and the constitution (Pondicherry) Scheduled Castes Order, 1964. The Bill seeks to modify the list of SCs for the state of Odisha. The castes Sualgiri, Swalgiri will be introduced to the Sabakhia caste in the list of the SCs for the state of Odisha. The name of the Union territory of Pondicherry was modified to Puducherry by the central act in 2006. 39. GOVERNMENT REDUCES NUMBER OF CENTRALLY SPONSORED SCHEMES TO 28l: The Government has reduced the number of Centrally Sponsored Schemes from 66 to 28 and effective from the financial year 2016-2017. The Govt. of India has rationalized Centrally Sponsored Schemes based on the recommendation of the sub group of chief ministers. The minister has mentioned that 6 Schemes have been categorized as Core of the Core 20 Schemes as Core Schemes and remaining 2 as Optional Schemes. The related Schemes could be merged and implemented as “Umbrella Schemes” to administer the satisfactory component in the line with state specific requirements. 40. G-7 FOREIGN MINISTERS MEETING HELD IN LUCCA, ITALY: Foreign Ministers from the G-7 countries gathered for the annual meeting in Lucca, Italy. United States and its allies believed that Syrian Govt. headed by Bashar al-Assad had used chemical weapons to attack a rebelcontrolled town last week in which 87 civilians were killed. G-7 countries have insisted that Russia should stop giving support to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Imposing further sanctions on Russia is also being considered as an option. 41. 100 YEARS OF GANDHI'S SABARMATI ASHRAM CELEBRATED IN LONDON: The 100th Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi's Sabarmati Ashram was celebrated in London to retell Gandhi's story with some interesting visual elements to the Internet generation. Sabarmati Ashram: The Home of Gandhi's Experiments with Truth was screened at Nehru centre. It is written and produced by senior NRI journalist Vijay Rana. The film was about how Gandhi set up this ashram in 1917 on the banks of Sabarmati River. PARLIAMENT PASSES HIV AND AIDS (PREVENTION AND CONTROL) BILL 2017: Parliament passed Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (Prevention and Control) Bill, 2017 to ensure equality for HIV positive persons in spheres of education, employment and treatment. The bill prohibits discrimination towards HIV positive persons in areas of education, healthcare treatment, jobs, availing insurance, holding public/private office and residing or renting a property. Affected person's informed consent has to be sought before disclosing his/her HIV status. 2. G20 MINISTERS ISSUE DECLARATION ON 'SHAPING DIGITALISATION FOR AN INTERCONNECTED WORLD': A ministerial conference of G20 ministers in charge of digitalisation was held in Dusseldorf, Germany. This was the 1st such meeting of G20 ministers responsible for digitalisation. They have issued a declaration on 'Shaping Digitalisation for an Interconnected World', which lays out priorities and course of action. The declaration acknowledged that digital economies have the potential to contribute to achieving the goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

BHEL AND INDIAN RAILWAYS TIE-UP FOR ROOFTOP SPV SYSTEMS: The agreement of 2 MWp Roof Top SPV Systems to be installed at Diesel loco Modernization Works, Patiala was signed between Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited BHEL & Indian Railways Organisation for Alternate Fuels in the presence of Mr. Amitabh Mathur, Director (IS &P), BHEL and Mr. Ravinder Gupta CAO (IROAF). PIYUSH GOYAL LAUNCHES 'URJA MITRA' MOBILE APP: Power Minister Piyush Goyal has launched the 'Urja Mitra' mobile application and Rural Feeder Monitoring Scheme in New Delhi. A committee of government and central bank officials in India is set to propose new regulations related to digital currencies or virtual currencies. It includes representatives from NITI Aayog a government think tank and the SBI the country's largest bank. Strong actions will be taken against “eve-teasers“. The state government had already established women police stations in all the districts to ensure women's safety. The campaign Operation Durga was launched after identifying places where such anti-social elements were indulging in eve teasing, stalking, vulgar comments, and other similar activities. Haryana govt to give free laptops to first 500 meritorious students 12. 33 YEARS OF OPERATION MEGHDOOT A SAGA OF UNMATCHED BRAVERY: After 33 years of Operation Meghdoot, the Indian Army's longest deployment on strategically located Siachen Glacier celebrating a saga for bravery, courage, heroism and sacrifice on the world's highest and coldest battle field. Two disputed boundaries with Pakistan and China. It lies in the Karakoram Range in the North West India. Siachen Glacier is 76.4 km long and covers about 10,000 sq km uninhabited terrain. On this day, a Platoon of 4 Kumaon led by then Captain Sanjay Kulkarni planted the 1st Indian Flag on Siachen Glacier at Bilafond La which began Operation Meghdoot. 13. SAUDI ARABIA RAISES $9 BILLION IN FIRST GLOBAL ISLAMIC BOND ISSUE: Saudi Arabia raised $9 billion in its 1st global Islamic bond issue. The sale of Islamic bonds known as Sukuks. The global debt market for the 1st time raised $17.5 billion in a bond issue. It is the biggest ever bond sale from an emerging-market nation. Investors submitted more than $33 billion in bids. Saudi Arabia is tapping international and domestic markets to help finance a budget deficit that may reach $53 billion this year. Saudi Arabia has been hit by a drop in oil prices that's why it is raising debt, cut spending and preparing the world's largest initial public offering of state-owned oil company Saudi Arabian Oil Co. 14. WORLD BANK APPROVES $375-MN LOAN FOR INDIA'S 1ST WATERWAY PROJECT: World Bank has approved a $375 million loan to India for developing its 1st waterway project: The National Waterway. Under this project, a navigable stretch of 1360 km will be developed on River Ganga from Varanasi to Haldia. The project will put in place the basic infrastructure required to develop water transportation in this prospective region. As a part of the project, the outdated Farakka barrage lock-gate will be modernised, thereby facilitating smoother passage of vessels. 15. JHARKHAND POLICE INITIATES TARA ZAMEEN PAR PROGRAMME FOR UNDERPRIVILIEGED CHILDREN: With a motive to enlighten children in naxal-affected areas of Jharkhand's Palamau district, Jharkhand Police has initiated Tare Zameen Par program to encourage children to lead happy lives. Deputy Inspector General of Police, Vipul Shukla appealed to locals to donate bags, shoes, books and clothes that will be distributed among poor children. 16. INCOME TAX DEPARTMENT LAUNCHES 'OPERATION CLEAN MONEY-II' TO PROBE 60,000 PEOPLE: The Income Tax department launched 2nd phase of 'Operation Clean Money' under which it will probe over 60000 individuals including 1300 'high risk' individuals. In this phase the identification was not based on any particular threshold transaction amount. Detailed investigation will be conducted for around 6000 high value property transactions and 6600 cases of outward remittances. 17. HIMACHAL PRADESH CELEBRATING 70TH HIMACHAL DAY: Himachal Pradesh celebrated its 70th Foundation Day. It came into existence in year 1948 post merger of 30 odd princely states. On the occasion of the 70th foundation day of Himachal Pradesh, CM Virbhadra Singh launched an 'Unemployment Allowance Scheme' at a state level function in Chamba. Under the scheme Himachal Pradesh State Government will provide unemployment allowance of Rs 1,000 per month to youth having intermediate or above qualification whereas the unemployed youth with disability would be provided allowance of Rs 1,500 per month. 18. RBI TIGHTENS SCREWS ON BANKS TO EASE BAD DEBT: The RBI has come out with a revised Prompt Corrective Action framework for banks which will be effective from April 1. This framework is based on certain risk thresholds, the breach of which could result into serious consequences such as merger with another bank or even closure of the bank. Financial reports of banks as on March 31 will be considered as reference to evaluate banks' condition vis-a-vis the thresholds. This new framework will be reviewed after 3 years. 19. MAHARASHTRA TO STAGE SPECIAL DRIVE FOR TRANSGENDERS TO REGISTER AS VOTERS: Maharashtra has become the 1st state to launch a special awareness drive to ensure that transgenders in the state register as voters in larger numbers. The state branch of the Election Commission of India launched a special drive for this purpose. It is to be noted that 15th April is celebrated as 'Third Gender Day' to commemorate Supreme Court judgement in 2014 to recognise transgenders as 'Third Gender'. 23. INDIAN ENGINEER TIRUPATI JAIN WINS 'CARTIER WOMEN'S INITIATIVE AWARD': Tirupati Jain is an environmental enginner who won a Cartier Women's Initiative Award. She has chosen by an Independent International Jury. Tirupati has given this award for providing innovative solutions of water management to the women those working on farms and small farmers against drought and flash floods. She is a government employee and works for the rural development. Her Gujrat based company has implemented 232 systems in India which benefitted 18000 small farmers and 100000 of the rural poor people. The ceremony was held in France. The event is held in association with International Business School Insead and Management consulting firm McKinsey & Company. US CONDUCTS SUCCESSFUL FIELD TEST OF NEW B61-12 NUCLEAR BOMB: The National Nuclear security Administration and US Air force have conducted a test of a modification of the B61 atomic bomb. SBI SURPASSES ONGC TO BECOME MOST VALUED PSU STOCK: State Bank of India surpassed ONGC to become the most valued public sector undertaking state-owned firm in terms of market valuation. 'Nyaya Mitra' Scheme aims to reduce pendency in lower courts of selected districts. Cases which have been pending for more than 10 years will be accorded priority. Tele Law litigants from marginalised communities can avail legal advice from expert panel of lawyers stationed at State Legal Services Centres by video conferencing through the common service centres. INDIA DEVELOPS NATIONAL ACTION PLAN TO COMBAT ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE: 'Inter-Ministerial Consultation on Antimicrobial Resistance Containment' was held in New Delhi. At this meeting, J P Nadda, Union Health Minister announced the finalization of India's comprehensive and multi-sectoral National Action Plan to combat Antimicrobial Resistance. AMR is the evolutionary ability of microbes such bacteria, virus and parasite to become resistant to medicines which treat the diseases caused by them. 'Delhi Declaration' for collectively strategizing to contain AMR was signed by all the ministers present at the meeting. NDMA CONDUCTED FIRST MOCK EXERCISE ON FOREST FIRE: The National Disaster Management Authority has conducted first-of-its-kind State-level mock exercise on forest fire in Uttarakhand. It was conducted on the basis of principle of Incident Response System. It identifies stakeholders and clearly attributes roles and responsibilities to each one of them. The exercise is significant as almost 70% State's geographical area is under forests and incidents of forest fires are commonplace. The exercises were conducted in coordination with various agencies, such as Army, fire, forest, health, police, National Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Response Force and civil defense. 16 2

PRESIDENT OF NEPAL, BIDYA DEVI BHANDARI'S VISIT TO INDIA: Bidya Devi Bhandari, the 1st female President of Nepal was on an official visit to India. INDIAN NAVY SUCCESSFULLY TESTS LAND-ATTACK BRAHMOS SUPERSONIC MISSILE: The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile has successfully test fired. It is a land-attack version with an extended range increased from 290 km to 450 km. It is a joint venture of India and Russia. The missile was test fired from a Mobile Autonomous Launcher from the Integrated Test Range at Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It is two-stage missile, the 1st one being solid and the 2nd one ramjet liquid propellant. It is capable of carrying a warhead of 300 kilogram, both conventional and nuclear. 20. UP GOVERNMENT TO SET UP 40 YOGA WELLNESS CENTERS IN 40 DISTRICTS: Uttar Pradesh has decided to set up 40 Yoga wellness centers in 40 districts across the state in this current year. The International Yoga Day is celebrated across the world on 21 June. The Centre is implementing National AYUSH Mission as a Centrally Sponsored Scheme. The state government has also planned to start post graduate courses at Unani College Allahabad, Government Ayurvedic College and hospital Varanasi, Government Homeopathy College Allahabad and TT College Lucknow. A 1st herbal garden of the state would be set up soon near the Government national Homeopathic college and hospital, Lucknow to encourage the farmers to cultivate herbal plants across the state. In December 2016, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization had formally inscribed Yoga in its representative list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. 21. INDIA TOPS GLOBAL REMITTANCES AT $62.7 BILLION IN 2016: WORLD BANK: As per 'Migration and Development Brief' released by World Bank, India is world's largest remittance recipient for the year 2016. Remittance inflows to India amounted to $62.7 billion in 2016. However, there has been a drop of 8.9% as compared to $68.9 billion received in 2015. In 2016, remittances accounted for 9% of India's Gross Domestic Products. State wise, remittances to Kerala accounted for 36.3% of the net state domestic product. 22. GOVT EXTENDS DATE FOR FILING TAX DECLARATIONS UNDER PMGKY TILL MAY 10: Filing of declarations about tax payment and deposits under Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojna has been extended up to May 10 for black money holders. The Central Board of Direct Taxes has extended to May 10 about filing of declaration where tax, surcharge and penalty under PMGKY has been paid on or before the 31st March and deposit under the Deposit Scheme has been made on or before April 30. The deposits can be made in the form of cash or in an account with bank or post office or specified entity, with a tax, surcharge and penalty totaling up to 49.90%. Mandatory deposit of 25% of the undisclosed income will be made in Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana. The deposits are interest free and have a lock-in period of 4 years. 23. 1ST DIGITAL VILLAGE INAUGURATED IN ARUNACHAL PRADESH: Nirjuli village-1 in Papum Pare district was declared as the 1st digital village of Arunachal Pradesh. It aims to improve connectivity to speed up socio-economic development of the masses. To benefit the masses and reduce their dependence on banks. It aims to give financial support to the villagers to improve their income level. Awareness programmes has been done and provide computers to schools and promote digitalization. Digital village aims at cashless transactions even in 'sabjimandis' to make payment through mobile. The state government assured support to promote V-set linked customer service point and urged the GoAP to offer incentives like Assam Government. 24. TAMIL NADU, MADHYA PRADESH, HIMACHAL PRADESH AND TRIPURA CHOSEN FOR KRISHI KARMAN AWARD: Madhya Pradesh has been selected for Krishi Karman Award 2015-16 for highest production of wheat. MP has been selected for this award 5th time in a row. Tamil Nadu has been chosen for Krishi Karman award 2015-16 in Category I – where food grains production is higher than 10 million tonnes. Tripura has been chosen for Krishi Karman award 2015-16 in Category III – where food grains production is lesser 1 million tonnes. Himachal Pradesh has been chosen for Krishi Karman award 2015-16 in Category II – where food grains production is between 1 – 10 million tonnes. Meghalaya has been selected for commendation award for total food grains production. 25. WORLD BOOK AND COPYRIGHT DAY: APRIL 23, 2017: The World Book and Copyright Day was celebrated on 23 April across the globe. Special events were organized to promote reading, publishing and copyright across the world including India. 2017 Theme was Quotes Wishes Slogans Greetings. This day is focused on to motivate the children and people. To mark the World Book and Copyright Day 2017, the UNESCO released 3 books: Rethinking Education in a Changing World, Reshaping Cultural Policies and Reading in a Mobile Era. This day is aimed to inspire the children to explore the books and to generate a sense of learning. BIHAR ASSEMBLY PASSES GST BILL: Bihar State Legislature has ratified the Constitution Amendment Bill on Goods and Services Tax. According to the constitutional provision the Bill has to be passed by at least 50% of the state Assemblies. The GST Bill is aimed at bringing a uniform tax regime in the country by subsuming state levies. The government intends to reach the golden number of 15 states in the coming month. 27. ONE OF ASIA'S LARGEST CHURCHES INAUGURATED IN NAGALAND: The Sumi Baptist Church Zunheboto is in the northeastern state of Nagaland, India. It is finally set for dedication after almost a decade since its construction began. It is the largest church building in Asia. It stands tall at 1864.9 m above the sea level and measures 23, 73,476 Sq.ft. Its budget is Rs 36 cr. Seating capacity is of 85,000 people. Its length is 203 feet breadth is 153 feet and height is 166 feet.

INDIA BECOMES WORLD'S 5TH LARGEST MILITARY SPENDER: As per figures revealed by Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, India has become world's 5th largest military spender in year 2016. India's military expenditure for 2016 was $55.9 billion, which marks 8.5% growth over 2015 figure. US is largest military spender with $611 billion followed by China with $215 billion and Russia with $69.2 billion. 29. INDIA REPLACES JAPAN AS NO 2 LPG IMPORTER: India has replaced Japan as the world's 2nd-largest importer of liquefied petroleum gas. China has retained its position as world's top LPG importer. 30. MRIDUL GEHLOT ELECTED AS PRESIDENT OF KABADDI FEDERATION: Mridul Gehlot and Dinesh Patel elected unanimously president and general secretary of Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India in Jaipur. The elections were held here under the supervision of justice I S Israni. International Kabaddi Federation, Indian Olympic Association and Asian Kabaddi Federation observers from the Sports Ministry were also attended for the elections. COMMEMORATION OF THE NATIONAL PANCHAYATI RAJ DAY: 24TH APRIL, 2017: National Panchayati Raj Diwas has observed on April 24 every year. It marks the passing of the Constitution (73rd Amendment) Act, 1992 that came into force with effect from 24 April 1993. Best performing Gram Panchayats are conferred with Rashtriya Gaurav Gram Sabha Purskar by the Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj. This year Shri Narendra Singh Tomar, Minister of Panchayati Raj, is commemorating “National Panchayati Raj Day” at Lucknow Uttar Pradesh. The CM of Uttar Pradesh, Shri Adityanath Yogi inaugurate the conference. MONTE CARLO MASTERS: NADAL WINS MEN'S SINGLES; BOPANNA AND CUEVAS LIFT MEN'S DOUBLES: Rafael Nadal has won the Men's Singles title of Monte Carlo Masters Tennis tournament 2017. He defeated Albert Vinolas at a summit clash in Monaco. Earlier, India's Rohan Bopanna and his Uruguayan partner Pablo Cuevas lifted the men's doubles crown at the Monte Carlo Masters after win over Spain's Feliciano Lopez and Marc Lopez in Monaco.

35. MAHARASTRA GOVT. SIGN MOU WITH RAILWAYS TO EXPAND GREEN COVER & RAILWAYS TO SET UP RS200 CR SOLAR POWER PLANT: The Indian Railways is looking to set up a solar power plant in Bhilai where it has spare land, through Railway Energy Management Company Limited. The project cost of the 50 MW plant is estimated at Rs 200 cr. Of the total cost 20% will be borne by the Railways, while the remaining 80% will be raised through debt. Maharashtra govt signs MoU with Railways to expand green cover. Under which trees will be planted on the land adjacent to the railway tracks in the state. 36. JOINT INDIAN-FRENCH NAVAL EXERCISE 'VARUNA' BEGINS: The Indian Navy began a joint maritime exercise Varuna with the French Navy at the Mediterranean Sea. The exercise was begun on 24th April 2017 and will be ended on 30th April. Its main aim is deepening combat coordination between the two navies. Guided missile destroyer INS Mumbai, stealth frigate INS Trishul and fleet tanker INS Aditya are taking part in the Varuna exercise. 37. LEGENDARY FILMMAKER AND ACTOR KASINATHUNI VISWANATH CONFERRED PRESTIGIOUS DADASAHEB PHALKE AWARD: Renowned film director and actor Kasinathuni Viswanath will be conferred the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India's highest award in cinema. The award will be conferred by President Pranab Mukherjee on May 3 in New Delhi. The Dadasaheb Phalke Award committee had recommended Kasinathuni Viswanath's name, which was approved by Union Information and Broadcasting Minister, M. Venkaiah Naidu. 38. NORTHEAST INDIA'S LARGEST IT HUB OPENS IN TRIPURA: Northeast India's largest Information Technology hub has been inaugurated in Tripura's capital city Agartala. It is the 6th IT hub in the Northeast region. The IT hub was inaugurated by Manik Sarkar, CM of Tripura, Tapan Chakraborty – IT and Education Minister of Tripura and Omkar Rai – Director General of Software Technology Parks of India. This IT hub has been set up at a cost of Rs. 50 cr and with the help of technical knowledge shared by STPI, under the union Ministry of Electronic and Information Technology. 39. 101-YEAR-OLD WINS SPRINTING GOLD MEDAL AT THE WORLD MASTERS GAMES IN AUCKLAND: 101-year-old Man Kaur has won Gold Medal for 100 meters sprint at the World Masters Games in Auckland. Man Kaur took up athletics 8 years ago, at the age of 93. She has participated in several masters athletics meets across the globe. She has won 17 Gold Medals so far. 40. SHOT PUTTER MANPREET WINS GOLD AT ASIAN GRAND PRIX, QUALIFIES FOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: Indian shot putter Manpreet Kaur has clinched gold in the Asian Grand Prix Athletics Meet. It was held in Jinhua, China. Manpreet also qualified for the IAAF World Championships to be held in August 2017 in London. India ended the 1-day event with 7 medals – 1Gold, 4 Silver and 2 Bronze. Tintu Luka (women's 800m), Neeraj Chopra (men's javelin), Jinson Johnson (men's 800m) and Neena Varakil (women's long jump) won a silver each while Dutee Chand (women's 100m) and Om Prakash Karhana (men's shot put) bagged a bronze each. 41. WORLD MALARIA DAY: MARCH 25, 2017: World Malaria Day 2017 was observed globally on 25 April 2017 with the theme “End Malaria for good”. 1st malaria vaccine to be tested in Kenya, Ghana and Malawi in 2018 announced by WHO. As per the World Malaria Report 2016, the rate of new malaria falls by 21% globally between 2010 and 2015. The WHO European Region was declared a malaria-free in 2016. 42. INDIA SUCCESSFULLY TEST-FIRES AGNI-III BALLISTIC MISSILE: India has successfully test-fired 3000 kilometre range Agni-III ballistic missile. It has launched from Abdul Kalam Island off Odisha coast. The test was carried by the Strategic Forces Command with logistics support from Defence Research Development Organisation. The test was aimed at re-establishing the operational effectiveness of the weapon system. This Surface-to-Surface nuclear capable intermediate-range ballistic missile can hit targets in the range of around 3000 km. It can carry a warhead of 1.5 tonne which is protected by carbon all composite heat shield. 46. INDIA WINS 16 MEDALS AT US OPEN KARATE CHAMPIONSHIP: India has won 16 medals at US Open karate Championship held in Las Vegas. India grabbed 3 gold 2 silver and 11 bronze medals. India also won a gold medal in the team event. Shaifali Agarwal, Abhishek Sengupta won a gold medal, silver in 2 different individual events. 47.
