NEWS ANALYSIS 1ST – 7TH FEB 2017 1. NATION CELEBRATES ITS 68TH REPUBLIC DAY: India celebrates its 68th Republic Day on 26th January 2017. On January 26, 1950, the Constitution of India came into force. President Pranab Mukherjee has started the ceremony by hoisting the Indian flag, following which the Republic Day Parade from Rajpath. The Theme of 2017 Republic Day is: Skill India and Beti Bachao Beti Padhao. The Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and the Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan was the Chief Guest at the ceremony. 2. LIST OF PADMA AWARDEES 2017: The Padma awards announced every year on India's Republic Day. NATIONAL VOTERS' DAY BEING OBSERVED 25 JANUARY 2017: The Election Commission of India will celebrate the 7th National Voters' Day across the country on 25 January for enhanced participation of citizens in the electoral process. President Pranab Mukherjee will give awards for best electoral practices to Superintendents of Police, District Collectors and other functionaries involved in election management. The Day is also utilized to spread awareness among voters regarding effective participation in the electoral process. 4. UN APPOINTS DIRECTOR OF UNIC IN NEW DELHI: Derk Segaar has been appointed as the Director of the New Delhi based United Nations Information Centre covering the Kingdom of Bhutan and India by the UN Secretary-General António Guterres. He was the Head of Communications of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in New York. 5. RUBBER SOIL INFORMATION SYSTEM LAUNCHED BY THE MINISTRY OF COMMERCE & INDUSTRY FOR RUBBER GROWERS: The Minister of Commerce & Industry, Smt Nirmala Sitharaman launched Rubber Soil Information System in New Delhi to provide the detail about the soil quality to the rubber growers to enhance productivity besides reducing the cost of production. RubSIS is an online platform developed to recommend application of appropriate mix of fertilizers to the specific plantations of rubber growers depending upon their soil nature. 6. KREMLIN TO HOST 2018 FIFA WORLD CUP FINALS: The country's Football Union chief Vitaly Mutko stated that the draw for the 2018 FIFA World Cup finals hosted by Russia will take place in the Kremlin.Mutko,the deputy prime minister of Russia stated FIFA had approved the plan, which world football's ruling body later confirmed. The World Cup finals draw ceremony will take place. 7. MADHYA PRADESH CM ANNOUNCES TOTAL BAN ON POLYTHENE BAGS: Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan has announced a total ban on polythene carry bags from May 1, 2017. "Use of polythene carry bags and their littering was affecting environment and cleanliness. He stated that cows were dying eating such bags. Chouhan also said that 3 months are being given to polythene manufacturers before the ban. 8. BURJ KHALIFA LIGHTS UP IN 'TRICOLOUR' TO MARK 68TH INDIAN REPUBLIC DAY: Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building located in Dubai, has lit up in the colours of the Indian National flag on 25th January and 26th January to celebrate India's 68th Republic Day. The LED shows were to be held on both days along with complimenting Dubai Fountain shows. The Indian Consulate in Dubai has a flag-hoisting ceremony at the consulate premises by Consul General Anurag Bhushan, followed by flag-hoisting at the Indian High School grounds in Oud Metha, Dubai. 9. MAKE MY TRIP LAUNCHES INDIA'S 1ST SOCIAL LUXURY TRAVEL MAGAZINE: India's largest online travel portal MakeMyTrip has launched the 1st ever social luxury travel magazine called 'Luxury Travel Times'. The mobile-only magazine is released through innovative ad platforms like Facebook Canvas & Instagram-Stories 'Spa-cation', 'Heaven on Earth' & 'Heritage' was first few themes of the magazine presenting exotic choices to explore fine living. 10. 68TH REPUBLIC DAY: ASHOK CHAKRA TO HAVALDAR HANGPAN DADA FOR SACRIFICING HIS LIFE FOR NATION: Havaldar Hangpan Dada, who killed 4 terrorists before laying down his life in Kupwara has been awarded Ashok Chakra, the highest peace time gallantry award. His wife Changsen received the award from the President Pranab Mukherjee during the 68th Republic Day Parade in New Delhi. Havaldar Hangpan Dada of Assam Regiment killed 4 intruding terrorists at the height of 13,000 feet in the harsh and icy Himalayan range of North Kashmir. 11. INDIA RANKS 6TH ON EIGHT GREAT POWERS IN 2017: AMERICAN FOREIGN POLICY MAGAZINE: India is ranked at the 6th spot behind China and Japan in a list of 8 great powers for the year 2017 by a leading American foreign policy magazine. The list is topped by the US, whereas China and Japan are at tie for being on the second spot. Russia and Germany are the other 2 countries ahead of India. Iran is ranked 7th and Israel is on the 8th spot. 12. TELANGANA RANKS 2ND IN WALNUT'S CASHLESS SCORE CARD: Telangana ranked 2nd in the `Cashless India Scorecard' prepared by Walnut app to track the growth of digital payments in the country. The scorecard is meant for comparing how each state is moving towards a cashless economy post- demonetization based on an aggregate and anonymised analysis of Walnut's over five million user data. KERALA CM INAUGURATES E-HEALTH KERALA SCHEME AT PEROORKADA HOSPITAL: The CM of Kerala Pinarayi Vijayan launched the IT Project, e-Health Kerala which is named Jeevan Rekha at Peroorkada Model Government Hospital. The project has been developed by the Health Department in association with the state IT Mission. The project aims to create a centralized database that will have the complete healthcare records of all the citizens in the state through the digitization of government hospitals. MYSURU GETS INDIA'S 1ST POST OFFICE PASSPORT KENDRA: The Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers Ananth Kumar inaugurated India's first Post Office Passport Seva Kendras at Metagalli post office in Mysuru. The second POPSK simultaneously opened in Gujarat. The POPSK has been launched to expand the passport services over a wide area and simplify the process to travel abroad. ARUNACHAL LAUNCHES 'DULARI KANYA' SCHEME TO CHECK INFANT MORTALITY: Arunachal Pradesh launched 'Dulari Kanya', a special scheme to check infant mortality in the state. Governor V Shanmuganathan launched this scheme, under the scheme government will deposit Rs 20,000 in the bank account of a girl child, born in any government hospital. It will be paid along with the accrued interest after she attains 18 years of her age. SUMO WRESTLER BECOMES FIRST JAPANESE ATHLETE TO RECEIVE HIGHEST HONOUR IN 19 YEARS: Japan's sumo wrestler Kisenosato was promoted to the highest rank of the wresting, Yokozuna after winning his first title at the New Year Grand Sumo Japan Wrestler Tournament. Kisenosato, whose real name is Yutaka Hagiwara is the 1st Japanese born and bred wrestler to earn the coveted rank of “grand champion since 1998. TRUMP APPOINTS INDIAN-AMERICAN ATTORNEY TO KEY WHITE HOUSE POST: US President Donald Trump has appointed prominent Indian-American attorney Uttam Dhillon to a key White House position. Dhillon, who worked as chief oversight counsel for the House of Representatives Financial Services Committee has been appointed as special assistant to the President on ethics and compliance matters. ANDHRA PRADESH ANNOUNCED RS 100 CRORE FUND OF FUNDS TO DEVELOP FIN TECH STARTUPS: The Government of Andhra Pradesh announced an Rs 100 crore fund of funds to develop financial technology startup ecosystem in the State. The announcement was made by State's special Chief Secretary JA Chowdary. The fund looks for strengthen the industry-academia-government partnership in order to develop skilled human resources in the Fin Tech sector. The objective of this fund of funds is to develop Vishakapatnam as a global FinTech hub. A high-level advisory board will be set up to advice the CM N Chandrababu Naidu on the policies related to Fin Tech sector. UNION GOVERNMENT RECONSTITUTED COMMITTEE TO IDENTIFY ATHLETES UNDER TOP SCHEME: The Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Vijay Goel reconstituted Target Olympic Podium Committee. The main objective of the reconstituted TOP Committee is to identify and support potential medal prospects for 2020 and 2024 Olympic games under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme. Abhinav Bindra was appointed as the chairman of committee. Inder Dhamija will act as the Member Secretary of the reconstituted committee. NATIONAL IMMUNIZATION DAY: 29TH JANUARY 2017: 29th January 2017 is observed as the National Immunization Day. President Pranab Mukherjee has launched the countrywide programme for 2017 by administering polio drops to children aged below five years at a function in Rashtrapati Bhavan. The programme will cover around 17 crore children aged under five years in an effort to maintain the country's polio-free status. DENMARK TO APPOINT WORLD'S FIRST 'DIGITAL AMBASSADOR': Denmark has announced a 'digital ambassador' to manage its relationship with technology giants like Apple and Google, becoming the first country to do so. Denmark's Foreign Minister Anders Samuelsen stated that “Such companies have become a type of new nations and we need to confront that”. He also said that “The companies' market values are large enough to enter G20”. 2017 AUSTRALIAN OPEN: ROGER FEDERER WINS MEN'S TITLE: Roger Federer has won the Australian Open, beating long-time rival Rafael Nadal in the finals in Melbourne, Australia. IMD TO SET UP WEATHER STATIONS IN 660 DISTRICTS BY 2019: The India Meteorological Department has decided to set up weather stations in 660 districts of the country for better and prompt weather forecasting with major focus on non-rain-fed and rain-fed areas to give crop specific advisories. INHERITANCE COURT FOR NON-MUSLIMS TO BE SET UP IN ABU DHABI: The Deputy PM and Minister of Presidential Affairs and Chairman of Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has issued a resolution to set up a Personal Status and Inheritance Court for non Muslims in Abu Dhabi. The objective of setting up the Court is to ensure access to services for all segment of the society and promote the culture of tolerance and acceptance of other communities values at the judiciary level. The aim of the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department is to enhance the sustainability and effectiveness of the judicial procedures in harmony with the prevailing norms in the community. 3

INDIA'S FOREIGN EXCHANGE RESERVES RISES BY $ 932.4 MILLION TO $ 360.775 BILLION: The Reserve Bank of India informed that the Foreign Exchange Reserves of India rose by $ 932.4 million to $360.775 billion for the second consecutive week. 27. INDIA'S LARGEST STARTUP INCUBATOR TO BE BUILT AT HUBBALLI: Indian-American entrepreneur, venture capitalist and philanthropist Gururaj Deshpande has decided to launch India's largest startup incubation centre at Hubballi in Karnataka. The decision was based on the idea of expansion of the Deshpande Foundation's initial incubation center, Sandbox, which was founded by Deshpande and his wife Jaishree. 28. ABUL HOSSAIN WINS 2017 KOLKATA MARATHON: Siliguri based Abul Hossain won the Kolkata Full Marathon by completing the race in 02:34:02. Hossain defeated Kolkata lad Biswanath Pal. WORLD LEPROSY DAY-JANUARY 29: The World Leprosy Day was celebrated on January 29 all over the world. The World Leprosy Day is celebrated worldwide on January 30 annually or its nearest Sunday, as the day coincide with the anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi's death on 30 January. The Objective of the day is to increase the public awareness of the Leprosy also known as Hansen's disease. Leprosy is one of the oldest recorded diseases in the world. It is an infectious chronic disease that targets the nervous system. 30. FIRST EDITION OF THE NORTH EAST INVESTORS SUMMIT HELD IN SHILLONG: The 1st edition of the North East Investors Summit was inaugurated by the Union Textiles Minister, Smt. Smriti Zubin Irani in Shillong, Meghalaya. The North East Investors Summit 2017 was jointly organized by the Union Ministry of Textiles and the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region of the Government of India in collaboration with industry associations Confederation of Indian Industry and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry. The theme of the summit was “Exploring Opportunities in North East Region”. Its aim to launch North East Region as a Global destination for investment by exploring possibilities of attracting the investment especially in textile manufacturing. The summit also aims to attract new skills and advanced production technology. 31. INDIA'S FIRST MULTI-SPORTS MUSEUM INAUGURATED IN KOLKATA: India's first multi-sports museum, Fanatic Sports Museum was inaugurated at the Ecospace in New Town, Rajarhat, Kolkata jointly by Abhinav Bindra, Sachin Tendulkar, Deepa Malik, Sourav Ganguly and Devendra Jhajaria. 32. KARNATAKA GOVT. APPROVES AMENDING LAWS TO LIFT BAN ON KAMBALA & BULLOCK CART RACE: The Karnataka state cabinet approved amending Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Bill, 1960 Act to legalize the Bullock Cart Race Kambala which is a traditional festival held annually in Karnataka. The amendment Bill will be introduced by the state cabinet in the legislature session. The Karnataka High Court banned the Kambala after animal rights group filed a petition to ban the sport as it showed cruelty against animals in sports like bull-taming and buffalo-racing. The Kambala is a buffalo race held annually in the districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada between November and February. 33. IRIS MITTENAERE OF FRANCE CROWNED MISS UNIVERSE 2017: Iris Mittenaere of France was crowned as the Miss Universe 2017 in the international beauty pageant event which was held at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines. Mittenaere is the first European to win the Miss Universe title since 1990. Iris Mittenaere has the resolution to set up dental and oral care campaigns worldwide. The first runner-up was Raquel Pelissier from Haiti and second runner-up was Andrea Tovar of Colombia. 34. TEXTILE MINISTRY INAUGURATES MEGHALAYA'S FIRST EVER APPAREL AND GARMENT CENTRE AT AMPATI: Meghalaya's 1st ever Apparel and Garment Making Centre was inaugurated jointly by CM of Meghalaya Dr. Mukul Sangma and Union Textiles Minister Smriti Zubin Irani at Ampati in South West Garo Hills. The centre would capacitate to create job opportunity for both women and men of the region and make them economically empowered. 35. E-PAATHSALA LAUNCHES UNIQUE TECHNOLOGY-BACKED SERVICES FOR EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS IN INDIA: Bangalore based Start-up firm E-paathsala has launched an integrated accreditation and ERP technology solution for the universities and colleges to enable them better manage their multiple accreditation standards in an easy, fast and efficient manner and bridge the gap identified for specific accreditations. Every college and University has multiple accreditations for standards such as National Assessment and Accreditation Council, National Board of Accreditation among others. E-paathsala would provide a software and consultancy solutions that would help the institutions to improve their management system with emphasis on improving accreditation standards. 36. INCOME TAX DEPARTMENT LAUNCHES OPERATION CLEAN MONEY: Income Tax Department lead by S ‎ ushil Chandra has launched Operation Clean Money to verify the cash deposited in the banks during November 9th to December 30th 2016. An online Verification process will be carried out by comparing the demonetization data CBDT with information in ITD databases. This information will be available at the portal https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in. The PAN holder can view the information using the link 'Cash Transactions 2016' under 'Compliance' section of the portal. The verification will be closed if the cash deposit is declared under Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojna. 37. RELIANCE DEFENCE SIGNS CONTRACT WITH MINISTRY OF DEFENCE TO CONSTRUCT 14 FAST PATROL VESSELS FOR INDIAN COAST GUARD: Reliance Defence and Engineering Ltd, a wholly owned arm of Reliance Infrastructure Ltd, has signed a contract worth Rs. 916 cr with the Ministry of Defence to design and construct 14 Fast Patrol Vessels for the Indian Coast Guard. The medium range, high speed vessels would be deployed for patrolling within the exclusive economic zone, anti-smuggling, costal surveillance, anti-piracy, search and rescue 4

RDEL is the first private sector shipyard which has been awarded a contract of designing and building such ships for Indian Armed Forces. 38. UNION BUDGET 2017: Finance Minister Arun Jaitley presented the Union budget 2017-2018 in Lok Sabha on 01 February 2017. This is the 4th budget by the Narendra Modi government. It was broadly focused on 10 issues rural population, farming sector, infrastructure, youth, poor and health care for the underprivileged, financial sector for stronger institutions, public services, speedy accountability, tax administration for the honest and prudent fiscal management.

39. FISCAL DEFICIT REACHES 94% OF THE BUDGET ESTIMATE: Fiscal deficit in the first 9 months of 2016-17 touched 93.9 % of the Budget estimate. The fiscal deficit had stood at 87.9% in the corresponding 9 months a year ago. The fiscal deficit is the gap between revenue and expenditure. According to data released by the Controller General of Accounts, tax revenue was 71.4% of the full-year budget estimate. Total expenditure, Plan and Non-Plan, was 74.3% of the government's full-year estimate. 40. RAJASTHAN, TELANGANA BAG EGOV AWARDS: This year, under the State category, Telangana and Rajasthan emerged Winners of Excellence while the Award of Recognition went to Nagaland and Odisha. USD 3.3 BILLION ASSISTANCE LAUNCHED BY UNICEF: The UN Children's Fund launched an appeal for the year 2017 for USD 3.3 billion to help over 48 million children across the globe who are driven from their homes due to disasters, conflict, and climate change.

The index would consider Global Innovation Index indicators and other India–centric data from various states to determine the ranking which will be updated periodically. The Indian Government would provide a grant of SLR 300 million for the island school to be constructed in Polonnaruwa district. HSBC ESTIMATES INDIA'S GDP GROWTH AT 7.1%: HSBC has estimated the GDP growth rate of India at 7.1 % for the year 2017-18 which is up from the 6.3 % in the year 2016-17. RBI has decided that customers would not be levied any charges by banks and prepaid payment instrument issuers for transactions up to Rs. 1,000 settled on Immediate Payment Service, Unstructured Supplementary Service Data and Unified Payments Interface till March 3, 2017. It has directed banks to lower the interest on credit card dues. 8. GROSS NPA OF PSBS STRIKES 9.83% IN FY16 AND 11.82% BY SEPTEMBER 2016: As per the data released by the Minister of State for Finance Santosh Gangwar in the Lok Sabha, Public Sector Banks witnessed a bad loan at 9.83 % of the gross advances in the financial year 2015-16, while the bad loans for Private sector banks were capped at 2.70 % of the advances. For the FY16, PSBs had gross advances of Rs. 51, 04, 915 cr. Out of this Rs 5,02,068 cr was categorized as gross non-performing assets which accounts for 9.83%. In case of the Private sector bank of the total Rs 17,91,681 cr gross advances made in FY16, only Rs 48,380 cr were gross NPA means only 2.70 %. 9. CAG SUMAN SAXENA AND TWO OTHERS APPOINTED AS WHOLE-TIME MEMBERS IN IBBI: Former Deputy CAG Suman Saxena, Navrang Saini and Mukulita Vijaywargiya have been appointed as whole-time members for 5 years or till completion of 65 years in Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India. IBBI is mandated to regulate the functioning of insolvency professionals agencies, insolvency professional and information utilities under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code. The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016 is the bankruptcy law of India which seeks to consolidate the existing framework by creating a single law for insolvency and bankruptcy. 10. VIRAT KOHLI TOPS T20 BATSMAN LIST IN THE LATEST ICC RANKINGS: As per the latest ICC Ranking, Virat Kohli is still on the top spot with 799 points. INTEGRATED UNDERWATER HARBOUR DEFENCE & SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM LAUNCHED IN MUMBAI: Vice Admiral Girish Luthra, Flag Officer Commanding- in-Chief, Western Naval Command inaugurated the Integrated Underwater Harbour Defence and Surveillance System in Mumbai. It has been developed to strengthen Harbour Defence and Security at Mumbai. It will enhance the security of the valuable assets against surface and underwater threat. IUHDSS has been designed and developed by Israeli Aerospace Industries ELTA. It consists of integrated radars, sonars and electro-optic cameras. KIREN RIJIJU INAUGURATES PROGRAMME ON 'INNER STRENGTH AND DISASTER RESILIENCE': Kiren Rijiju, Minister of State for Home Affairs inaugurated the programme on 'Inner Strength and Disaster Resilience' in New Delhi. The programme was organised by National Disaster Response Force. The Minister stressed NDRF force to focus on mental fitness along with physical fitness. The Ayush Minister Shri Shripad Yesso Naik said that regular yoga practice can help reduce the level of sugar in the blood, along with lowering blood pressure, keeping a weight check, reducing the symptoms and slowing the rate of progression of diabetes, as well as lessening the severity of further complications. The Ministry has also launched a programme to integrate Ayurveda, Homoeopathy and Unani with National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke. Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy has opened 8 OPDs in various Govt. Hospitals to integrate Yoga & Naturopathy to cure diabetes. 19. QATAR AIRWAYS LAUNCHES WORLD'S LONGEST FLIGHT: The Qatar Airways has launched the World's longest scheduled commercial service to ply between Doha to Auckland. The inaugural service of Flight QR920 took off from Doha and will take 16 hours and 20 minutes to travel 14,535 kms to reach Auckland in New Zealand. However, during the return flight, the Boeing 777 flight would take 17 hrs and 30 mins due to high-altitude winds. This makes Qatar Airways to launch the World's fastest and longest passenger service in terms of flying time. Prior to this, emirates launched the world's longest non-stop scheduled commercial flight with a service from Dubai to Auckland, spanning 14,200 kilometres.

20. SASIKALA SWORN IN AS AIADMK LEGISLATURE PARTY LEADER: Sasikala Natarajan has elected as the Legislative Party leader of Tamil Nadu's political party AIADMK. Sasikala, the general secretary of AIADMK was unanimously elected by the AIADMK MLAs at a party meeting in Chennai. Now she is set to become the CM of the state as O. Panneerselvam stepped down from the post. Ms. Sasikala will be sworn in as the CM of Tamil Nadu on February 9 after which Panneerselvam will hand over his resignation letter to the governor. 21. INDIAN TEAM DEFEATS MALAYSIA TO WIN GOLD IN ASIAN JUNIOR SQUASH: India's boy team defeated Malaysia 2-0 in Hong Kong to clinch the gold medal at the Asian Junior Squash championship. CHIEF MINISTER SARBANANDA SONOWAL LAUNCHES CHIEF MINISTER SAMAGRA GRAMYA UNNAYAN YOJANA IN ASSAM: CM of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal, launched Chief Minister Samagra Gramya Unnayan Yojana in a function held at Sri Sri Madhavdev International Auditorium of Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati with an aim to develop all the villages to Assam in the next 5 years. Its objective is to bring a revolutionary change in the state by doubling the farm income by 2022. The financial outlay of the CMSGUY scheme is Rs. 30,000 cr. It will be implemented in phased manner in the villages of Assam till 2021-22. For the proper implementation of the scheme a Mega Mission Society has been constituted under the chairmanship of Sarbananda Sonowal. 23. HRD MINISTRY TO SET UP NTA TO CONDUCT EXAMS FOR HIGHER & SECONDARY EDUCATION: The Union Human Resource Development Ministry led by u‎ nder Prakash Javadekar is set to constitute a National Testing Agency which will be responsible for conducting examinations for higher and secondary education. The announcement was made in the Union Budget 2017-18 to set up NTA as an autonomous and selfsustained premier testing agency to conduct all entrance exams to higher education. The aim of setting NTA is to ease the work of the bodies like AICTE, CBSE, from the responsibilities of conducting exams, and eventually enable them to focus more on academics. The Agency will have its own independent experts, preparing their own question papers, and conducting exams. 24. ANDHRA PRADESH GETS ITS FIRST SMART POLICE STATION: Andhra Pradesh CM N Chandrababu Naidu inaugurates the State's 1st Smart Police Station at Nagarampalem in Guntur city in Amaravati. The Smart station has been built within 2 months at a cost of Rs 91 lakh as a pilot project. The Andhra Police administration has formulated plans to build another 100 Smart Police Stations across the state. The main motive behind such smart police station is to bring a sense of pride among the officers and satisfaction among the public. ARUNACHAL PRADESH LAUNCHES 'ARUNACHAL CIVIL SERVICE AWARDS': The state government of Arunachal Pradesh launched the Arunachal Civil Service Awards in a bid to encourage good governance in the state. Through this award, the government aims to improve the work culture and boost the morale of government employees by recognising their hard work and innovation. The award consists of a medal, a scroll and cash awards of Rs 5 lakh for an organization or a group and Rs 1 lakh for an individual. 32. IAAF BANS RUSSIA FROM 2017 LONDON WORLD ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS: The International Association of Athletics Federations, the World Governing Body for Track and Field events, informed that Russia has been banned from the 2017 summer World Athletics Championships in London. Russia has been banned from international competition since November 2015 following a damaging report alleging that state-sponsored doping was prevailing in the country. The ban was extended in March 2016 and again in June 2016, preventing Russia's athletes from competing at the Rio Olympics. The country again has been banned until November 2017, after recommendations made by the IAAF task force investigating Russia's efforts at reform following a series of doping scandals recommended.

CHINA BECOMES WORLD'S LARGEST PRODUCER OF SOLAR POWER: China became the world's largest producer of solar energy after nearly doubling its installed photovoltaic capacity in 2016.China has surpassed Germany. With the increased capacity, China generated 66.2 billion kw-hours of energy last year, which however accounted for only 1% of its electrical output. The country further plans to double its current solar energy capacity by 2020. 34. RBI'S MONETORY POLICY FEBRUARY 2017: KEEPS REPO RATE UNCHANGED AT 6.25%: RBI governor Urjit Patel led Monetary Policy Committee kept the key repo rate unchanged at 6.25% in the 1st monetary policy review of 2017 and after Budget 2017. Limit on cash withdrawal from savings banks accounts to be relaxed in 2 stages. From 20 February, 2017 limit to be increased from Rs 24k to Rs 50K. From 13 March, 2017 there will be no limit on cash withdrawal from savings bank accounts. 9.92 lakh cr new notes infused into market as on January 27. Inflation seen at 4-4.5% for April-September, 2017. For January-March, 2017 CPI stays below 5%. 35. 3-DAY GLOBAL CONFERENCE ON NUCLEAR TERRORISM TO BEGIN IN NEW DELHI: The Ministry of External Affairs in coordination with the Department of Atomic Energy is hosting the Implementation and Assessment Group Meeting of the Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism at the Pravasi Bhartiya Kendra, New Delhi. Nearly 150 delegates from various partner countries and international organisations will take part in the 3-day event. Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar inaugurated the meeting organised by the Ministry of External Affairs and the Department of Atomic Energy. The meeting highlights India's commitment to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and technology and promote cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and global nuclear non-proliferation. UNION CABINET APPRISED OF MOU BETWEEN INDIA AND FRANCE IN INNOVATION, SCIENCE ANDTECHNOLOGY: The Union Cabinet chaired by the PM Narendra Modi was apprised of the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between India and France. The MoU seeks to augment bilateral cooperation in the fields of innovation, science and technology. The MoU was signed between the Technology Development Board and Bpifrance. While the TDB works under the Department of Science and Technology of the Union Ministry of Sceience and Technology. The main aim of the agreement is to carry out activities related to exchange of best practices in the fields of science, technology and innovation through the TDB and Bpifrance.

CENTRE SETS UP INTER-DEPARTMENTAL TASK FORCE TO CRACK DOWN BENAMI FIRMS: In an effort to pull out black money from shell companies, PM Narendra Modi has constituted a task force comprising members of various regulatory Ministries and enforcement agencies. The task force would work under the co-chairmanship of the Corporate Affairs Secretary Tapan Ray and Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia to monitor the actions taken by various agencies. The task force would review the functioning of shell companies to prevent their misuse for money laundering and tax-evasion.

INDIA RANKS 43 AMONG 45 NATIONS IN INTERNATIONAL INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY INDEX: In the 5th Annual International Intellectual Property Index released by US Chambers of Commerce's Global Intellectual Property Center, India has been ranked very poor at 43rd position out of 45 countries. The 2017 International Intellectual Property Index titled 'The Roots of Innovation' revealed that though India showed slight improvement its performance, still it continued to lag behind the rest of the world in IP protections. 4. This is for the 1st time that such atlas has been prepared for physically challenged with such minute details. The Braille Atlas has been prepared by National Atlas and Thematic Mapping Organisation under Department of Science & Technology. Aniruddha Bhattacharya, scientific officer with NATMO and Amitava Chakraborty and Devnath Sengupta, research officers, played a key role in preparing the atlas. 9. 2ND EDITION OF “HUNAR HAAT” INAUGURATED IN NEW DELHI: Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs (I/C) and Parliamentary Affairs Shri Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi was inaugurated the 2nd edition of the Hunar Haat at State Emporia Complex, Baba Kharak Singh Marg, Connaught Place in New Delhi. The theme of the 2nd Hunar Haat was Craft Aur Cuisine Ka Sangam. The festival will take place from February 11-February 26. The exhibition is being organized by the Minority Affairs Ministry through National Minorities Development & Finance Corporation under Upgrading the Skills & Training in Traditional Arts/Crafts for Development scheme. MULTINATIONAL NAVAL DRILL AMAN-17 BEGINS IN KARACHI: The 5 days multinational Aman-17 naval exercise kicked off in Karachi where 37 countries took part. The objective of this multi-national exercise is to display united resolve of the countries against terrorism and crimes in maritime domain. The exercise will also help in enhancing Pakistan Navy's interoperability with regional and extra-regional navies. This year theme was “Together for peace”. Aman-17 was inaugurated by Commander of the Pakistani naval fleet Vice Admiral Arifullah Hussaini. Out of 37 countries participating in 'Aman 17', 9 countries are participating with naval assets including Australia, China, Indonesia, Turkey, Sri Lanka, UK, USA, Japan and Russia.Aman 17. The Aman-17 is the 5th such exercise hosted by Pakistan every alternate year since 2007. 11. AJAY TYAGI TO SUCCEED UK SINHA AS SEBI CHAIRMAN: According to a government notification, senior IAS officer Ajay Tyagi has been selected to take over as the next Chairman of Securities and Exchange Board of India. He will replace incumbent Chief UK Sinha. Tyagi, a 1984batch IAS officer of the HP cadre is currently serving as an additional secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs in the Ministry of Finance and served as a Joint Secretary in Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change before joining Finance Ministry. 12. INTERNATIONAL DAY OF WOMEN AND GIRLS IN SCIENCE: FEBRUARY 11: The International Day of Women and Girls in Science was observed on February 11 to recognize the achievements of women in science and inspire and engage women and girls in science. “Gender, Science and Sustainable Development: The Impact of Media” was the theme of 2017 IDWGS. 13. 2017 NATIONAL WOMEN'S PARLIAMENT HELD IN ANDHRA PRADESH: National Women's Parliament was organized by the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly in association with MAEER's MIT School of Governance at Pavithra Sangamam in Amravati, Andhra Pradesh and aims to empower women. The 3 day conclave was based on the theme: 'Empowering Women — Strengthening Democracy'. The conclave was inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi via video conference in the presence of AP CM N Chandrababu Naidu and Speaker of Bangladesh Parliament, Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury. The goal of the conclave is to provide a platform to enable and encourage social, political and economic empowerment of women in all strata of the society. INDIA DECIDES TO HOST COUNTER-RADICALISATION CONFERENCE WITH ASEAN: India has decided to conduct Conference with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations to share experiences and ideas from the member countries on IIT Kharagpur preventing, radicalization and promoting deradicalisation. The event will deal with the growing IS threat and make effort to counter radicalization and misuse of religion by groups and countries for inciting hatred and terrorism. With this conference, India plan's to share experience and benefit from that of ASEAN countries. 15. GOVERNMENT APPROVES SETTING RS. 6,831 CR ELECTRONICS DEVELOPMENT FUND: The centre approved setting up the Electronic Development Fund with a total corpus of Rs. 6,831 cr to support entrepreneurship and innovation in electronics and IT. The Minister of Law and IT, Ravi Shankar Prasad approved a seed capital of Rs 681 cr on the basis of which more venture capital will be raised. The EDF will help to contribute to various other funds under it for those who invest the money in companies for creation of intellectual property rights in the field of electronics and IT. 16. NARINDER CHAUHAN APPOINTED AS AMBASSADOR OF INDIA TO THE REPUBLIC OF PHILIPPINES: Former IFS officer Narinder Chauhan has been appointed as the next Ambassador of lndia to the Republic of the Philippines. Currently Narinder is working as the Ambassador of lndia to the Republic of Serbia. 17. US AND JAPAN SUCCESSFULLY CONDUCTS TEST FLIGHT OF NEW BALLISTIC MISSILE DEFENCE SYSTEM: The United States and Japan successfully conducted a flight test of a Standard Missile-3 Block IIA from the Pacific Missile Range Facility at Kauai, off coast Hawaii. The nextgeneration SM-3 Block IIA Interceptor has been jointly developed by the U.S. defense firm Raytheon and Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to destroy an incoming ballistic missile target and is launched from US warship. The 2 nations have been working together since 2006 and America has so far spent about $2.2 billion on the system and Japan about $1 billion. The SM-3 Block IIA interceptor is designed to destroy short-to intermediate-range ballistic missile threats and can be deployed at land-based Aegis Ashore sites and Aegis-equipped warships. This was the 3rd flight test and the 1st intercept test of a SM-3 Block IIA, the most advanced version of the SM-3 “hit-to-kill” interceptor. 18. INDIA BEAT PAKISTAN TO WIN T20 WORLD CUP FOR BLIND: India defeated Pakistan to clinch the T20 World Cup for Blind tournament at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. Pakistan was defeated by India by 9 wickets. India's opening batsman Prakash Jayaramaiah was named as the Man of the Match. This was the 2nd edition of the tournament. The 1st edition was played in 2012 in which India beat Pakistan by 29 runs. 19. INDIA'S FIRST FLOATING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL INAUGURATED ON MANIPUR'S LOKTAK LAKE: India's 1st floating elementary school particularly for drop outs has been inaugurated on Loktak lake at Langolsabi Leikai of Champu Khangpok floating village in Manipur on the occasion of World Wetlands Day. The school named as Loktak Elementary Floating School has been opened under a floating elementary school initiative of All Loktak Lake Fishermen's Union, Manipur with the support of NGO, People's Resources Development Association under a programme of Action Aid India. The school will not only cater to the need of the children but for the illiterate adults as well. The newlyinaugurated school in the floating village is currently providing education to around 40 children from Class I-III by engaging two local teachers. PRDA will pay the volunteers under the project called 'Empowering vulnerable local communities for sustainable development', which is funded by Action Aid India. 21. GOVERNMENT TO LAUNCH INDRADHANUSH 2.0 FOR RECAPITALIZATION OF PSBS: Union Government has decided to launch 'Indradhanush 2.0' for recapitalization of public sector lenders so that the banks remain solvent and fully comply with the global capital adequacy norms namely Basel-III. Indradhanush 2.0 programme will be finalised by Reserve Bank of India after completion of Asset Quality Review being undertaken and is likely to be completed by end of March 2017. AQR (Asset Quality Review) is being undertaken to recognize the top defaulting accounts as Non-Performing Assets and make adequate provisions for them as they have negative impact on banks and their stocks. 22. FRANK WALTER STEINMEIER ELECTED NEW PRESIDENT OF GERMANY: Germany's former Foreign Minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier has been elected as the new President of Germany. Steinmeier won by 931 votes out of 1,239 valid votes cast by the members of the Federal Assembly. Steinmeier will succeed incumbent President Joachim Gauck who will step down on March 18. 23. SANDEEP JAJODIA APPOINTED NEW PRESIDENT OF ASSOCHAM: The CMD of Monnet Ispat & Energy Ltd Sandeep Jajodia, has been appointed as the new president of industry chamber Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India. Sandeep Jajodia has replaced Sunil Kanoria, the vice-chairman, Srei Infrastructure Finance Limited. Assocham will continue to play a transformational role both nationally and globally and the chamber will empower Indian enterprises by focusing on the most critical and relevant issues in a highly impact-oriented manner. 24. INS SARVEKSHAK BECOMES INDIA'S 1ST SHIP TO BE INSTALLED WITH SOLAR POWER SYSTEM: Indian Navy's survey class vessel INS Sarvekshak has become the 1st ship in India to be fitted with solar power system on board. The ship has been equipped with 18 sheets of solar panel of 300 Watt which is capable of generating 5.4 kW power. The estimated profit generated by the system during the ship service life of 25 years is Rs. 2.7 cr. It took about 6 months to install the entire system. The Indian warship is now 100% reliable for power source using sunlight that can be used for charging battery, communication equipment and general lightings onboard round the clock with battery outputs during the night. 25. WORLD RADIO DAY: FEBRUARY 13: World Radio Day is observed annually on February 13th across the world. The theme of this year was Radio is You which puts the spotlight on audiences, ensuring their views and diversity are represented on the airwaves. 26. AERO INDIA 2017 BEGINS AT AIR FORCE STATION, BANGALORE: The 11th biennial edition of International Aerospace and Defence Exhibition – Aero India 2017 kicked off at the Air Force Station, Yelahanka in Bengaluru, Karnataka.The 5 day event was inaugurated by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar. It has been organized and conducted by the Defence Exhibition Organisation.For the 1st time in the Aero India event, China will also participate with a 5 member team. CRICKETER SACHIN TENDULKAR ADOPTS DONJA VILLAGE IN MAHARASHTRA: Indian Cricket Icon Sachin Tendulkar is set to adopt his 2nd village in Maharashtra for transformation after successfully transforming the lives of villagers in Puttamraju Kandriga in Andhra Pradesh which he adopted in 2016 at an investment of about Rs. 6 cr. The Rajya Sabha MP Sachin Tendulkar is adopting Donja village in Osmanabad, Maharashtra under the Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojna to transform the undeveloped village into a model one. INTERNATIONAL COIN FAIR BEGINS IN KERALA: The International Coin Fair was inaugurated at Kanakakunnu Palace in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala by the Kerala state Minister for Tourism, Cooperation and Devaswoms Kadakampally Surendran. The 3 day exhibiton has been organized by the District Tourism Promotion Council. The exhibition has been organized to showcase more than 2,500 coins from around 500 regions including those from the time of empires and princely states. The SARTTAC was inaugurated by Shaktikanta Das, Secretary of India's Ministry of IMF's SARTTAC Finance. The main objective of SARTTAC is to help its member countries strengthen their institutional and human capacity to design and implement macroeconomic and financial policies that promote growth and reduce poverty. SARTTAC will help to assist the local member countries of South Asia including Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. SARTTAC will enable IMF to meet the growing demand for technical assistance and training from the South Asian region. 31. JAMMU & KASHMIR GOVERNMENT LAUNCHES E-PRISON PROJECT: The Jammu & Kashmir government launched an E-Prison project at NIC Centre Civil Secretariat Jammu to digitalize the record about the jail inmates. The project was inaugurated by the state Minister for Information Technology, Technical Education and Youth Service & Sports, Molvi Imran Raza Ansari. The e-prison project will enable to provide a centralized platform to avoid any data redundancy, avoid delay in processing the information and manage all the jails efficiently and thus reduce the time and cost of the process. The e-Prison Project will digitize 25 district jails, 2 central jails and 1 sub-Jail across the State. The jail will also be equipped with Router, Laser Printer, Switch, Desktops, Scanner, Finger Print scanner, UPS and Web camera.

ISRO SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCHES RECORD 104 SATELLITES IN ONE GO FROM THE SATISH DHAWAN SPACE CENTRE IN SRIHARIKOTA: Setting a new record in the space mission, the Indian Space Research Organization successfully launched 104 satellites in one go from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. The satellites were launched on Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle PSLV-C37 which marked its 39th flight. The 104 satellite included a 714 kg Cartosat-2 Series satellite for earth observation, two Indian nano satellites INS-1A and INS-1B and 101 international nano satellites. Of the 101 satellites, 96 of these belong to USA and 1 each belongs to Israel, Kazakhstan, Netherlands, Switzerland and United Arab Emirates. The 2 Indian nano satellites INS-1A and INS-1B were developed as co-passenger satellites to accompany bigger satellites on PSLV. The 101 international customer nano-satellites are being launched as part of the commercial arrangements between Antrix Corporation Limited, the commercial arm of ISRO and the international customers. 35. 2017 COBRA GOLD EXERCISE BEGINS IN THAILAND: The 2017 Cobra Gold Military Exercise kicked off at the Sattahip Royal Thai Marine Corps Base in Chonburi Province, Thailand. THis is the 36th edition of the multinational drill and is co-organized by Cobra Gold United States and Thailand. 30 nations are participating in the drill including China, Singapore, India, Malaysia and South Korea who are either involved in or are observing the exercises. The exercise would comprise of a staff exercise, a field training exercise and enhance interoperability and humanitarian civic assistance projects in Thai communities. 36. INDIAN PANAROMA FILM FESTIVAL BEGINS IN PORT BLAIR: The Indian Panorama Film Festival started in Port Blair. About 15 films of different languages and different genre will be screened at two different venues. The 5 day film festival has been organised by the Directorate of Information, Publicity & Tourism, Andaman& Nicobar Administration in association with the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting and Directorate of Film Festivals/IFFI, New Delhi, Govt of India and inaugurated by the Chief Secretary, Andaman & Nicobar Administration, Shri Anindo Majumdar at DBRAIT Auditorium, Dollygunj, Port Blair. 37. KERALA CABINET GIVES IN-PRINCIPLE APPROVAL FOR GREENFIELD AIRPORT AT SABARIMALA: The Kerala cabinet gave its in-principle approval for setting up a Greenfield Airport at pilgrim centre Sabarimala located at the Periyar Tiger Reserve in the Western Ghat mountain ranges of Pathanamthitta District, Kerala. The state government has also directed Kerala State Industrial Development Corp to conduct a study on the proposed airport. The airport will cater to the needs of lakhs of devotees who visit the famous Lord Ayyappa hill shrine every year by reducing the traffic congestion.

INDIA RANKED 143 IN THE 2017 INDEX OF ECONOMIC FREEDOM INDEX: India has been ranked 143 out of 186 countries in the annual Index of Economic Freedom 2017 released by top US based Think Tank, The Heritage Foundation. Hong Kong, Singapore and New Zealand are the top three nations in the Index respectively. India has been placed in the category of “Mostly Unfree” Economies. Among South Asian countries, only Maldives (157) and Afghanistan (163) were ranked below India. Sri Lanka (112), Nepal (125), Pakistan (141), Bangladesh (128) and Bhutan (107) surpassed India in economic freedom. 39. Merchant Discount Rate charges on debit cards used by citizens for payment with effect from January 1, 2017. In December 2016, the government had decided to absorb the merchant discount rate charges in respect of debit card transactions for making payments to it to encourage people to use digital payments. RBI has directed the banks to forward their claim for reimbursement of MDR along with statutory auditor's certificate to RBI's Nagpur office on a quarterly basis. The banks will have to certify that MDR charges for transaction amounts up to Rs 1 lakh have not been collected from the payer. 40. RBI DOUBLES GOLD LOAN LIMIT FOR REGIONAL RURAL BANKS TO RS. 2 LAKHS: The Reserve Bank of India increased the gold loan limit for RRBs to Rs 2 lakh from the current Rs 1 lakh to help the farmers and artisans have access to credit who are willing to pledge gold as collateral. The limit has been twice for the loans not exceeding 12 months from the date of sanction. The facility will be available with bullet repayment scheme. Under the scheme, while interest will be charged on a monthly basis on the total outstanding, it will become due for payment along with principal only at the end of 12 months from the date of sanction. However, RBI has also directed that the gold loans should not exceed 75% of the value of the gold pledged for taking the loan. 41.EDAPPADI K PALANISWAMI APPOINTED AS THE NEW CM OF TAMIL NADU: The TamilNadu Governor C Vidyasagar Rao appointed Edappadi K Palaniswami as 13th CM of the state. His appointment is in acceptance of the letter submitted by Palaniswami that he was elected as the leader of the AIADMK legislature party at a meeting of the party MLAs. O Panneerselvam was appointed as the CM within hours of death of AIDMK supremo and CM J Jayalalithaa. Later Panneerselvam stepped down paving the way for Sasikala to be elected its legislature party leader who was already chosen AIADMK general secretary.

SC INTRODUCES MIDDLE INCOME GROUP SCHEME TO PROVIDE LEGAL SERVICES AT AFFORDABLE RATE: The Supreme Court has introduced the Middle Income Group Scheme for the middle income group people whose gross income is not exceeding Rs. 60,000 per month or Rs. 7.5 lakh per annum. The MIG Legal Aid Scheme is a self-supporting scheme whose objective is to provide legal services to the middle income group who cannot afford the expensive litigation in the Supreme Court. Under this scheme, middle class people who have the desire to avail the benefit of the Scheme shall have to fill up the form prescribed and accept all the terms and conditions contained within and thus can avail the services of the society for a nominal amount. Under this scheme a Supreme Court Middle Income Group Legal Aid Society would be set up as a governing body. 2. TWO DAY 'MOMENTUM JHARKHAND' GLOBAL INVESTOR SUMMIT 2017 CONCLUDED IN RANCHI: The 2 day Global Investors' Summit 2017 was held at Khelgaon in Ranchi, Jharkhand from Feb 16-17, 2017 with the brand name 'Momentum Jharkhand'.Its main aim is to promote industrial activity in Jharkhand and establish the state as one of the prime investment destination of Eastern India. Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley inaugurated the Summit while PM Narendra Modi addressed the summit through video-conferencing. A Flying Red Elephant was the mascot for the Jharkhand's Global Investors Summit 2017. On the concluding day of the 2017 Global Investors Summit 209 MoUs were signed between nine departments of the Jharkhand government worth Rs 3,03,987 cr with different companies. 3. GOVERNMENT INCREASES THE CASH CREDIT LIMIT FOR MSMES TO 30 %: The Union government has increased the Cash Credit limit for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises to 30% of turnover from the existing 20% to encourage them to conduct businesses digitally. Through digital means of conducting the business, the balance sheet of companies would be clean and this would help MSMEs to get loans from banks and promote Ease of Doing Business. Presently the taxes for MSMEs are calculated at 8% for revenue of up to Rs 2 cr. With digital transaction, tax liability will be reduced from 8% to 6%. 4. CANARA BANK INKS MOU WITH HRD MINISTRY TO START HIGHER EDUCATION FINANCING AGENCY: Bangalore based Public sector Canara Bank has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Human Resource Development Ministry to operationalize the Higher Education Financing Agency. The establishment of the Higher Education Financing Agency was approved by the Union Cabinet in September 2016. 5. KARNATAKA BANK LAUNCHES NATIONAL PENSION SYSTEM IN MANGALURU: Mangaluru based private sector lender Karnataka Bank Ltd launched National Pension System at its corporate office in Mangaluru. Its aim is to provide financial security at old age by giving regular income in the form of pension. Under the scheme, one can contribute to NPS while earning and eventually start receiving pension on his/her attaining the age of 60 years to meet their financial needs. To avail the benefit, any individual between the ages 18-60 years can register their name with the bank branch to contribute and to get pension benefit. The investor can avail of the exemption to the extent of Rs 50,000 under section 80 CCD 1 even though they are contributing towards any other pension schemes. 6. As per the RBI notification the move will enable the Indian entities issuing rupee denominated bonds abroad to have wider choice of investors. The Multilateral and Regional Financial Institutions where India is a member country can only invest in the rupee denominated bonds for example BRICS led New Development Bank, Asian Development Bank etc. 11. ISRO SUCCESSFULLY TESTS C25 ENGINE FOR GSLV MARK III ROCKET: The Indian Space Research Organization successfully conducted the final ground testing of its indigenously developed Cryogenic Upper Stage engine for GSLV Mark III rocket at ISRO's Liquid Propulsion Complex at Mahendragiri in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu. The ISRO Chairman AS Kiran Kumar informed that the test was last in the series before going for an actual rocket launch. The C25 stage is the most powerful upper stage developed by ISRO and uses Liquid Hydrogen and Liquid Oxygen propellant combination. It will better serve the next generation GSLV rocket to launch 4-tonne class satellite in the Geostationary Transfer Orbit. The completed rocket will take on board the GSAT-19 satellite, which is an experimental communication satellite. 13. MAHARASHTRA APPROVES RS. 250 CR CLOUD SEEDING PROGRAMME: The state government of Maharashtra has approved a Rs. 250 cr Cloud Seeding Programme to experiment whether cloud seeding produces sufficient rain. Under this programme, the weather scientists will fly airplanes loaded with silver iodide Maharashtra Approves Rs. 250 cr Cloud Seeding Programme over clouds above Solapur, Maharashtra during the monsoon 2017 beginning with a 3 year initial investigation. INDIA APPROVES USD 340 MILLION LOAN TO NEPAL FOR DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES: India has sanctioned a soft loan of US dollar 340 million to Nepal for various infrastructure development programmes. INDIA TO HOST NEXT DAVIS CUP TIE IN BANGALORE IN APRIL: Bangalore will host the next Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Zone group-1 tie against Uzbekistan. As per the All India Tennis Association the tie clash will be held on the hard courts of Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association in Bangalore. The winner of the tie will make way to the World Group Play-offs to be held in September, 2017. 19. BIHAR GOVERNMENT PROHIBITS STATE OFFICIALS FROM CONSUMING LIQUOR ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD: The Bihar Cabinet under the chairmanship of CM Nitish Kumar has ruled out a new rule under which no officials of the state government would be allowed to consume liquor either in the state or outside the state and not even abroad. This makes Bihar the 1st state to have such restrictions for officials and judges. The cabinet amended the Bihar Government Servants' Conduct Rules 1976 and approved the Bihar Judicial Officers Conduct Rules, 2017. Any officer found guilty would be liable to face dismissal, suspension or even salary cuts. 20. KHAJURAHO DANCE FESTIVAL STARTS IN MADHYA PRADESH: The Khajuraho Dance Festival kicked off at Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh. The dance festival is conducted every year by the Madhya Pradesh Kala Parishad. This cultural festival showcases various Indian classical dance styles such as Bharathanatyam, Kathak, Odissi, Kathakali, Kuchipudi and Manipuri with performances of some of the best exponents in the field. 21. SBI REBRANDS CORPORATE WEBSITE AS BANK.SBI: The country's largest lender State Bank of India rebranded its corporate website as “bank.sbi” from the earlier “sbi.co.in”. Now bank.sbi is the highest domain protocol commonly known as generic top level domain. With this, SBI has become the 1st banking organization in India to adopt gTLD for its internet presence. The adoption of gTLD will enable SBI to use its corporate name .sbi as their website's top-level identifier instead of using “.com” or “.co.in” as domains. 22. SEBI APPROVES IRB INVIT FUND TO RAISE FUND THROUGH IPO: Market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India has given its approval to IRB InvIT Fund to raise Rs 4,300 cr through an initial public offering. IRB InvIT Fund is an investment trust sponsored by IRB Infrastructure Developers Limited. Infrastructure Investment Trusts are like mutual fund schemes which pool in money from individual investors for investing in infrastructure initiatives. APPLE ACQUIRES ISRAELI START-UP REAL FACE: An American multinational technology company Apple has announced to acquire Israelbased start-up “RealFace” for an undisclosed amount. IRAN LAUNCHES ADVANCED ROCKETS DURING MILITARY EXERCISES IN DESERT: The Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard launched sophisticated rockets during a military exercise in Iran's central desert. PAKISTAN CRICKET LEGEND SHAHID AFRIDI ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT FROM INTERNATIONAL CRICKET: Legendary Pakistani cricket Shahid Afridi announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket putting an end to 21-year career. Afridi had already quit the Test and ODI cricket earlier but still continued with T20. The 36-year-old star played for Pakistan Twenty20 team at the 2016 world championships in India. After that he stepped down as the captain and continued to play as a player. 30. RAVI SHANKAR PRASAD LAUNCHES CYBER SWACHHTA KENDRA IN NEW DELHI Union Minister of Electronics and IT Ravi Shankar Prasad launched Cyber Swachhta Kendra in New Delhi for Botnet cleaning and Malware analysis as a psrt of digital India initiative. He also launched two mobile apps: Mkavach to protect smart phones and tablets from hackers and Samvid to protect Desktops from suspicious applications from running. Its aim is to create a secure cyber space by detecting botnet infections. Cyber Swachhta Kendra will operate in close coordination and collaboration with Antivirus companies and Internet Service Providers. 31. N CHANDRASEKARAN APPOINTED AS TCS CHAIRMAN: Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran has been appointed as the non-executive Chairman of Tata Consultancy Services. Rajesh Gopinathan is appointed as CEO and MD, V. Ramakrishnan as Chief Financial Officer and N. Ganapathy Subramaniam as Chief Operating Officer of TCS. BSR & Co LLP Chartered Accountants as its statutory auditors for five years till 2022, subject to the approval of shareholders. KPMG India Chartered Accountants to audit its financial statements under the International Financial Reporting Standards from fiscal 2017-18 to fiscal 2021-22. 32. HEALTH MINISTRY LAUNCHES 'SAATHIYA KITS' TO IMPROVE ADOLESCENT HEALTH: C.K. Mishra, Union Health Secretary has launched “Saathiya Resource Kits” that will provide information on adolescent related issues such as puberty and mental health among others. The resource kit comprises of Bhranti-Kranti Game, an Activity Book, a Question-Answer Saathiya Kits Book and a Peer Educator Diary. Mishra also launched the mobile app 'Saathiya Salah' for adolescents. The initiative launched as part of the Rashtriya Kishor Swasthya Karyakram program which was launched in January 2014 and also aims to bring down the apprehensions and doubts among growing adolescents about the body related changes that they undergo during puberty. 33. NATIONAL BIODIVERSITY CONGRESS 2017 HELD IN KERALA: 3rd National Biodiversity Congress 2017 held Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Its aim is to identify practical evidence based case studies at regional level to support the plan of action. Theme of the event was “Mainstreaming Biodiversity for Sustainable Development” with 4 sub-themes. This year event is comprises of programmes including exhibition, conference, capacity building workshops and Childrens Biodiversity Congress. 34. INDIA, CHINA TO HOLD STRATEGIC DIALOGUE TO BOOST BILATERAL TIES: Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar attended the 1st India-China Strategic Dialogue to be held in Beijing to reinforce bilateral ties amid hectic meetings to resolve differences over Beijing's reluctance to support India's NSG bid as well as a UN ban on JeM chief Masood Azhar. The two sides discussed all issues of mutual concern and interest including friction point and expressed strong commitment to develop positive relations despite differences. India & Chinaiii. Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar along with China's Executive Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Yesui held the strategic dialogue and also held talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. 35. BHARAT FINANCIAL LAUNCHES INSTANT MICROLOAN FACILITY: Hyderabad based non-banking finance company Microfinance institution Bharat Financial Inclusion Ltd launched an instant loan approval at a village near Bassi in Jaipur district, Rajasthan. The objective of this initiative to help rural areas embrace cashless transactions. The loan amount will be deposited directly to the loanee bank account. The loan facility based on a 3-step verification process of Aadhar-based e-KYC, credit bureau authentication and e-Sign and non collateral loans up to Rs 60,000 for one year to rural women. It will be rolled out by June 2017 in all microfinance companys nationwide network with several being in Rajasthan, Bihar and Delhi. 36. SIDBI, VIJAYA BANK COMBINES TO PROVIDE CONCESSIONAL LOANS TO MICRO, SMALL UNITS: Lucknow based Small Industries Development Bank of India has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Bengaluru based Vijaya Bank for providing concessional finance to micro and small enterprises. Aim: To promote and strengthen the units in the MSE segment. The MoU also expect joint financing/cofinancing of MSMEs for meeting capital expenditure under the 'SIDBI Make in India Soft Loan Fund for Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises' scheme at concessional rate of 9.60 per cent, along with working capital from Vijaya Bank.SIDBI, Vijaya Bank. The resources and expertise of SIDBI in MSME financing and the outreach of Vijaya Bank are proposed to be leveraged. 37. ICRA SAYS GVA GROWTH TO DECLINE BY 70 BPS TO 6.2% IN Q3: Guragon based Domestic rating agency ICRA reported that the gross value added is set to slip to 6.2% in the third quarter from 6.9% and GDP growth will decline to 6.5% from 7.2%. Services sector is expected to ease to 8% from 9.1% in line with moderation in fuel demand following the note ban. Industrial growth is set to more than halve to 4% from 8.6%, led by manufacturing, construction and mining and quarrying. The annual growth of systemic deposits improved to 15.2% as of December 23, 2016 from 10.2%. 38. AMARINDER SINGH'S BIOGRAPHY 'THE PEOPLE'S MAHARAJA' RELEASED: Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh's biography, 'The People's Maharaja', written by Khushwant Singh was released in Chandigarh. Captain Amarinder Singh is an Indian politician of the Indian National Congress. He was CM of Punjab from 2002 to 2007. Now, he is the sitting President of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. 39. Upon this decision Sikkim has inked MoU with the union government under the Scheme Ujwal Discom Assurance Yojana for operational improvement of the state's Power Distribution Department.UDAY. The MoU will help in improving operational efficiency of the power distribution and reduction in AT&C and transmission losses to 15% and 3.50% respectively, is possibly to bring in added revenue of around Rs 328 cr. 40. BRICS SUMMIT'S 1ST SHERPAS MEETING HELD IN CHINA: China is hosting the 1st official BRICS Sherpas Meeting in Nanjing -Jiangsu Province under its chairmanship. The meeting is focusing on the theme of “Stronger Partnership for a Brighter Future” upon considering the current international situation. This event will see a participation of 100 people including Sherpas, the New Development Bank representatives and diplomatic envoys in China. 41. INDIA'S GDP PROJECTED TO SLOW TO 6.6% POST-DEMONETIZATION IMF: International Monetary Fund come up with India's growth projection which predicted slow 6.6% in 2016-17 fiscal due to “temporary disruptions” caused by demonetization. The IMF has noted that demonetization would have only short term impact on the economy and it would bounce back to its expected growth of more than 8% in the next few IMF announces implementation of long due quota reform years. The IMF said in its annual country report on India mentioned that growth is projected to slow to 6.6% in FY2016/17, and then rebound to 7.2% in FY2017/18, due to temporary disruptions, primarily to private consumption as a result of cash shortage. 42. KARNATAKA BANK BAGS TWO AWARDS AT IBA BANKING TECHNOLOGY AWARDS: The commerical banking company Karnataka Bank has won two 'IBA-Banking Technology' awards in Mumbai. 'Best financial inclusion initiatives (small bank)' category and 'Best use of digital and channels technology (small bank)'. The award recognizes and rewards individuals, professionals and banks. Chief General Manager Mahabaleshwara MS and General Manager Raghavendra Bhat M, received the awards from Viral V Acharya, Deputy Governor of RBI. 42. NATIONAL FOLK FESTIVAL OF KERALA 2017 BEGINS IN THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The National Folk Festival of Kerala has been organized in the capital city Thiruvananthapuram. The NFFK 2017 has been organised by the state Youth Welfare Board, in association with Bharat Bhavan and the Vyloppilli Samskrithi Bhavan. Some of the major performances may feature performance by noted Bengal folk music band 'Sahajiya' and artists from Kashmir to showcase dance and music programmes.
