Vigilance At All Times Following a number of recent incidents Club members are advised of the need to be vigilant at all times when attending matches or training sessions or just being on club property at any time. Activity in and around sports clubs can attract opportunists whose motives may be suspect. A number of local GAA Clubs have issued this same alert to their members in recent times. We know from experience that opportunists have targeted sports clubs in the past in search of easy pickings so our objective must be to be alert to the threat of any such attempts.

The best security protocol that is emerging for both day and particularly evening training/games activity is to close and lock the gates and dressing rooms and request some non-participant (parent, injured player etc) to keep an eye out on what is happening around the carpark area and arrange access for any legitimate arrivals. You are fully entitled to enquire as to what people are doing there—anybody legitimately attending the match etc will have no difficulty acknowledging their bona-fides; all others should be asked to leave after their vehicle details have been recorded for passing onto team manager, training organiser or Club executive committee member. You are also entitled to ring the Gardaí as needed, don’t leave it to someone else.

This protocol also applies to situations in or around any Club premises even outside of game time where members may suspect suspicious activity or individuals. And finally, please do not leave any valuables in cars.

Na Fianna Nuacht Senior Football – League Action Having overcome the first hurdle in Senior Football Championship two weeks ago against Thomas Davis, league action resumes in Mobhi Rd tomorrow night against Jude’s at 6.30pm. Summer evening football has now arrived so get down and support the lads. We’ve made a decent start to the season with 3 consecutive wins and then draw away to Kilmacud and a 2point defeat to Brigid’s, conceding a goal with just minutes to go, having led for the whole game. So a win against a Jude’s team, who have been a bit of a bogie team for us over the last few years, would be a nice return to winning ways in advance of the second round Championship match against UCD on June 4th. Come down and shout on the lads!

Cystic Fibrosis Research As previously covered in Na Fianna Nuacht, Club member Louise Rainford is involved in a research programme being conducted jointly between UCD and Crumlin Children’s Hospital into Cystic Fibrosis. This is fully supported by Na Fianna. If you would like your child to help, please have him/her pop along to Na Fianna Dressing Room 3 on Saturday 9.30-12noon. The study is funded by the Health Research Board, which is the government agency responsible for health research funding, and has ethical approval from all centres providing care for patients with CF.

Maintenance Update Following the Trojan work carried out by volunteers last weekend and also during this week, the Facilities Committee are asking for one last effort from Club members that will see the Collinstown pitch almost ready for seeding. A work programme is planned for tomorrow (Saturday 23rd) between 10am -12 noon and a good turnout would ensure that this project would be brought over the line successfully. So if you can spare any time at all tomorrow over these two hours it would be hugely appreciated.

Na Fianna Nuacht Day of Drama for Our Féile Boys Kieran Brennan tells the story of a memorable day for our U-14B footballers in last Saturday’s Féile. Hosted by St. Monica’s Club, we had no less than two venues to play out our ‘Group Games’ - Edenmore Park and Springdale Road. First up at Edenmore Park was the team everyone feared, Liffey Gaels. Having already lost heavily to this team in the League, we were expecting another difficult assignment, and so it proved. However the big exception this time out was that the lads never gave up, diving in for blocks, making runs into space and encouraging each other right up to the final whistle. Our second game saw us whisked off ‘Keystone-Cop-like’ to Springdale Road, courtesy of our dedicated and always reliable parents, to play our hosts, St. Monica’s. We fancied our chances here as we had surrendered a sizeable lead (twice!) in a previous encounter to end up with a draw, so we were full of optimism to claim our first points of the day. The game went end-to-end and from the first few minutes it was clear that this was going to be tight... very tight... and so it played out that we were on the losing side again, but this time only by a few points... The lads were justifyably completely deflated after the game and an air of disbelief descended over our group, as we were chauffeured back to Edenmore Park and our last game of day... OR WAS IT? ...

Na Fianna Nuacht Suddenly, a rumour spread through the camp... The statisticians, mathematicians, parents, coaches and coaches’ families - worked with pens, pencils and iPads, coming up with the headline news that IF we could manage to get a SIZEABLE victory in our last game (against a talented Beann Eadair), we just might qualify on points difference! But how many points? How would the other game go? How many points DID we score in the first game? Where did we write down the score? And was that despairing block on the line in Game One, or that point going in off the upright in Game Two going to come back and save us! Well, the game itself set off at a blistering pace and the Na Fianna lads, with the aid of a strong breeze, went on full offensive. Some brilliant scores, great teamwork and physical fitness moved us into a commanding lead by half time. We worried about the second half, the wind advantage now firmly with the Beann Eadair lads but our fears never materialised, the lads were having none of it and held out for a huge victory... but was it huge enough? A full 45 minutes after the full-time whistle, with nails bitten and tyres kicked, sandwiches eaten and tea swirled down, the team justifyably sitting proudly in second place of our group was... NA FIANNA!! Off we were again! And if you think the day was dramatic until now, well the fun was only starting. This time, our travels took us to the other side of the city, to play the mighty Kilmacud Crokes. After an injury on the Crokes pitch earlier in the day, our schedule was put back by an hour; Although throw in was now 4.00pm, the sun was still blazing and we knew things were going to get hot. But not THIS hot!... Na Fianna raced into top gear, scorching their way forward, picking off crucial scores and most importantly, working the ball forward with great teamwork and passion. At half time, we had a commanding lead, and could we believe it? Yes We Could! We were 20 minutes from... the FINAL!! The second half started as the first ended, in a full-throttle, full-blooded encounter. The standard of football was exceptionally high from both sides. And the crowds on both sides knew they were witnessing one of the games of the tournament. With the aid a strong breeze (which seemed to get so much stronger at half time, it really did) the Crokes lads used their home advantage and local knowledge of the bumps and hollows on the pitch to reel our lads back and get a few scores which just about took them past us in the end. We went to the mighty Crokes backyard, 8 hours after embarking on our football odyssey, and very nearly (grrrrrr) won.

Na Fianna Nuacht We had tears and more tears, sore backs, dodgy knees and light heads...but we also had PRIDE! A hugely enjoyable day had come to an end, and although in defeat, we all went home totally satisfied that everything we could have given, had gone into Féile 15. What more can you ask? Big thanks to our hosts St. Monica’s and Kilmacud Crokes. Big thanks also to the parents for their cooperation and help throughout a long day. But especially to the lads themselves who really ‘came of age’ when it mattered, showing us all that with a little hard work, a lot of progress can be made. A mention to the lads who missed out on Féile 2015 due to injury (but who still came along on the day!) and other commitments - we’re looking forward to having you back! Here’s to the future!
