Principal’s Report Kia ora, Talofa Lava, Kia Orana, Malo e Lelei, Fakaalofa Lahi atu, Bula Vinaka, Namaste, Ni Hao, Nei Ho, Selamat, Konnichiwa & greetings. Another snow day! It was very good that an announcement was made very early to close all Dunedin Primary Schools. Our 'Kiwi Kids' had a great adventure. They had been staying at the Otago Museum for their overnight camp and of course awoke to find the Museum surrounded by snow. With the help of our trusty minivan drivers Bruce and Tony H, we were able to collect the students from the Museum when the snow subsided and bring them back to school where they remained until they could be picked up. With the weather we have at the moment another snowfall could be on the way. The snow day was used by some classes as a topic for writing and poetry. I have been impressed with the students that have shared their great works of literacy with me. There is nothing better than seeing the pride of a student when they are sharing work that is of a high quality with me. Earlier this week a group of approximately 20 of our students sat a maths exam. The exam papers are sent to Australia where they are marked and graded. We look forward to seeing how well these students do. The exam is an international exam. The Museum overnight stays continue to be very popular with our younger students. They have such a great time at Discovery World and participating in the educational programmes there. Our Year 7 & 8 Ski Camp is rapidly approaching and our students are busy getting all their gear organised. We said farewell to our Otago Nugget Basketball player last Wednesday. Students have loved the basketball coaching sessions that Marques ran with each of the classes. Next week we have another Nugget start with us, Micah, who will continue with the coaching programme for the next two weeks. Next Tuesday four of our students fly to Auckland to spend the day at one of the High Tech Studios that is in operation there. They will learn about the studios and the types of projects that students will undertake there. Tomorrow is the last chance to return the road safety surveys (on yellow paper) that were sent out on Tuesday this week. A prize draw will happen next week and the results placed in next week’s newsletter. Regards Ben Sincock Principal
Computers in Homes
Computers in Homes offers you the opportunity to put a desktop computer in your home and trains you to use it and how to keep your children safe. A $3,500.00 package for $50.00. No catches, just ring Tony on 021 754 848 or phone the school office and register your interest. This is a government funded scheme to allow households to put computers into their homes and get an internet connection. Over 300 families in Dunedin have been involved in this programme and now have computers in their houses. There are still plenty of places left. These will be the last classes for the year so make sure you do not miss out on this great opportunity. Ring Now.

As children will be tired the following day they will need to be picked up from school at 10:00am. There is a fee of $25, if you think you will have difficulty paying please contact your site office. New Entrants over night camp is at school on Thursday 11 September, $5 charge, more information to follow closer to the time.

Room Pekapeka’s Baking and Loom Bands Sale Room Pekapeka are having a baking and loom bands sale for the children on Thursday 21st August at interval. All money raised will be used to buy petrol vouchers to allow Pape’s family to travel to Christchurch to visit him while he undergoes his treatment.
Uniforms
Please make sure your child’s school uniform is named, especially their polar fleece. Also please check that the polar fleece your child brings home at the end of the day is theirs and that they haven’t picked up some else's by mistake.

Feel Safe and Secure - When children feel safe and secure, they learn to trust other people. Children who don’t feel safe can be anxious and unhappy. This can affect their health and learning. But when they learn they can trust the adults around them, it helps them to grow up happy, healthy and to enjoy the world around them. Firstly, we make children feel safe by meeting their basic needs. But we also make them feel safe by showing them that we love them.

Free Yoghurt Mix
The school has packets of yoghurt mix to give away to anyone who has a yoghurt maker. It is past its ‘best before’ date but will still be fine . If you would like some please contact the school office.
Main Site Assembly
Ruma Manaia will be hosting the main site assembly tomorrow, Friday 15 August at 2.30pm. Come along and watch the teachers be quizzed and the children received class awards (Duffy Book), and other fun items.
Take-a-kid Fishing
Otago Fish & Game Council is running two free Take-a-kid-fishing days at the Southern Reservoir (located off Reservoir Road) on the 20th and 27th September 2014. Both start at 10am and finish at 12 noon. Registrations for the event start on the 25th August and are essential. To register, visit the Fish & Game web site www.fishandgame.org.nz click on the Otago Region, look for kids fishing events and follow the instructions. Alternatively, come into the Fish & Game office on the corner of Hanover & Harrow St. Dunedin Registrations are limited to 200 kids on each day so be in quick. Spare fishing rods will be available along with experts to help kids get started. Parents or caregivers must be present to supervise children.
Special Rigs for Special Kids Sunday 31st August 2014 at the Edgar Centre from 9am. For primary children with special needs and a supporting adult where they will be taken for a ride in a truck, and then return to the Edgar Centre for a barbeque lunch.
We require one caregiver per child to travel in the truck, as you know the individual needs of your child Any special dietary requirements for your child must be provided by you on the day. Doctors and St Johns Ambulance Service will be present. There is no cost to you or your family for this event.
