A big congratulations to Mrs Hyslop on the arrival of her grandson last week. Welcome back to Term 2 at Gladstone School. We have had a fantastic start to the term, including an exciting outing to view The Earth movie at the Screening Room today to activate our Inquiry learning programmes. We are really looking forward to sharing the exciting activities of this term with school families, such as; Cross Country events, Matariki celebrations, Speech competitions, and much more . We always appreciate the positive support we receive from school families for our school events. School community enthusiasm and positive attitudes really makes a big difference for encouraging our students and staff to shine. The reviewed Term 2 School calendar will go home with the eldest child in each school family tomorrow. Please note that sometimes dates do get changed due to unforeseen circumstances so please read each newsletter for notices about that. Please do make contact with us if you have any concerns or require further information at any events. The school phone number is 3727601, if the phone line is busy please leave a message and we will get back to promptly. Welcome New Entrant Students A very warm welcome to 5 year olds Sienna Cosgrove, Ben Freeman, James & Edward Gardner, Logan Hanson, Edith Mason, Ella Strang (and Ayla Aperloo who will join us very soon) who have started their school days at Gladstone School in Room 1 this week. It is wonderful to have you all here as part of our Gladstone School team and we are really looking forward to sharing school activities with you and your families throughout the year. Our school roll is now 135 students. Scholastic Book Orders Brochures were given out to students this week. Scholastic Book orders close on the 11th May 2018. If you are paying by cheque please make your cheque payable to Scholastic New Zealand. For further information please contact Miss Sophie Mitchell.

Term 1 Accounts Accounts were sent out the last week of Term 1. Thank you to those families who have already paid. Prompt payment is appreciated, however if any family is experiencing difficulty in meeting this payment please contact me directly (confidentiality assured). Please make sure that you pay on the Tax Invoice and not the Receipt that is sent home after payment is received. Congratulations Cyclist Congratulations to Japhy Fuller who came second in the Race the Rock Mountain Bike Race on Sunday in the under-18 section at Mt Holdsworth and won some pretty cool prizes. What a fantastic achievement Japhy. Congratulations ‘Cane for a Day’

Jack Anderson was chosen to deliver the Game Ball to the Hurricanes before their game against the Sunwolves last Friday night. He was what is called ‘Cane for a day’ and had a great time on the field with his Dad before the match. What a fantastic experience Jack - Congratulations! Uniform Orders Students will need black shorts and a Gladstone Shirt for their upcoming cross country events this term. School families are reminded that articles of our Gladstone School uniform can be ordered from NZ Uniforms (Masterton). This shop is located on Albert Street (but can be entered from Chapel Street, it is just along from McDonalds). They are open on Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and also on Saturday from 9am to 1pm. Phone 06 92982333. It is a good idea to order school shirts now so that students have these on hand for upcoming events such as the X-Country.

Second Hand Uniform Items If you want to advertise donating or buying Gladstone School second hand uniform items, you are welcome to do so through the school newsletter. Cross Country Training Cross Country training is now underway for all classes. Usually this takes place in the afternoons straight after the lunch break. If you have any questions about this activity please contact your child’s class teacher. Students are encouraged to wear appropriate footwear and clothing for training. They can leave these items at school if they prefer. A notice about the Carterton Country Cluster Cross Country event for Y1 - Y8 (being hosted by Gladstone School) will be sent home with the next school newsletter. Requests For Students To Go On Another Bus Run We have been getting a lot of requests for students to use another bus other than the one they are actually allocated to. There are times when too many students need the bus to go to a sport practice or town for specific reasons. We will endeavour to help you use a bus you are not allocated to, but those that are entitled to use that bus-run will always have preference and we will not overload buses. In most cases we can accommodate this and if it is the bus to Masterton, this requires an extra charge that requires you to buy more tickets, from either the office or Tranzit. In most cases you need to check on the day, usually around 1pm if your child can or cannot go on the bus. It is up to Tranzit to decide whether or not they charge for students travelling on buses that are not the students allocated bus i.e. the bus that students are actually entitled to be transported on. Please contact me, Graham Brown, if you need more clarification. Please note a special notice about school bus transport is being sent home tomorrow. Please check the school app and school bags for this notice.

Kids. Sport can often mean injuries, however there a number of ways to keep players having fun and staying injury-free this season. Plan to get kids to games in time to warm up with the team. Check they’ve got a drink bottle and a warm jacket for after the game. Make sure they have any protective equipment they need such as mouthguards and shin pads. Remind them to watch out for others – on the field, turf or court. Get them to cool down and stretch after games to take care of their growing muscles.
