JROTC Syllabus Leadership Education Training and Studies Orange County High School, Virginia >School Year 2017-2018< 1. Introduction. Welcome to JROTC, Leadership Education Training and Studies. This syllabus explains the course overview, objectives and requirements, evaluation standards, provides participant expectations, and lists instructor contact information. 2. Course Overview. This course develops both individual knowledge and self-confidence, while students apply personal and learned leadership skills. Using team dynamics, Cadets explore creative and innovative leadership strategies and styles. Cadets learn through challenging activities and scenarios that develop problem solving, and critical thinking skills, using communication dynamics, instructor and peer feedback, and conflict resolution techniques. 3. Objectives and Requirements. Each Cadet will achieve the success criteria linked to competencies illustrated below from Cadet Command Leadership Education Training (LET) Level I-IV Standards (Enclosures A and B for LET Levels I and II-IV highlight core learning objectives). Cadets must earn the Workplace Readiness Certification as a course completer defined by the Virginia Department of Education Career and Technology Education guidelines. Cadets in grades 10-12 will take the Armed Forces Aptitude Skills Battery (ASVAB) to earn Industry Certification IAW Virginia Department of Education guidance. JROTC falls within the Government and Public Administration career cluster through the National Security pathway. Attain Individual

4. Evaluation Standards. A. Grading standards comply with OCHS standards, and OCSS policy guidance. We will update grades in Power School weekly on Tuesday. B. Your Semester Final Grade is weighted according to the following scale: Summative: 60% Homework/Class work: 20% Other Assessments: 20% Final Exam 1/7th of total grade:

5. Participant Expectations. A. JROTC is an interactive course. Students must complete all assignments and participate in discussions and small group team-building activities to meet course objectives and pass the class. B. Honor Code and Values. Cadets must learn and strive to uphold the seven Army Values (LDRSHIP-Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage in all facets of their lives in and out of the JROTC classroom. A Cadet will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do. C. Attendance. You must be here to earn a grade and more importantly grow as an individual and team member. OCHS TARDY POLICY: 1st offense – Warning, 2nd offense -Warning/Parent Contact, 3rd offense Warning/Parent Contact/Lunch Detention, 4th offense - Parent Contact/Referral to Administrator. Cadet Command Regulation 145-2, Para 3-23, requires that any Cadet missing more than ten school days (excused or unexcused) must be withdrawn from the course pending an instructor/parent-student conference, and School Principal endorsement of the Senior Instructor’s recommendation. D. Participation in physical fitness training and wearing the required uniform is not optional. Students must dress out even with a Dr.’s note. Uniform standards reinforce planning and responsibility learning objectives. Students with excused or unexcused absences during uniform inspection day (typically Tuesdays) will be inspected the next day. Required grooming standards align with AR 670-1 (10 April 2015) without deviation. E. Fees. Payable to OCHS JROTC no later than the end of week two of the semester. Lab $20 – All Cadets, returning and new, each semester. PT Uniform - $20 MRB T-Shirt, OCHS Shorts ($15 replacement). Military Ball - $10 each Cadets and Guests (typically 2d Semester). F. Each Cadet signs for their Dress uniform, the Camouflaged ACU uniform (members of our Varsity Raider Team), and assigned textbooks (average value is $545.00). Location: Classroom #52 (LET I) and #34 (LET II-IV) in Orange County High School Main Bldg. Scheduled Team Training: Wednesday and Thursday 3:15 - 5:50 p.m. Team Competitions: Team Competitions are normally on Saturdays requiring travel by bus.
