Parish Profile Welcome to

The Parish Church of St Anselm Westfield Park, Hatch End HA5 4JL

A Parish under the pastoral oversight of The Right Reverend Jonathan Baker, Bishop of Fulham, having passed a Resolution under the House of Bishops’ Declaration. Patron: The Bishop of London

Introduction The Parish of Hatch End seeks a new energetic and entrepreneurial Parish Priest. The Parish has been in interregnum since the death of Father Clive Pearce in March 2016, our much loved Vicar for 43 years. As we continue our journey, we are in need of refreshing and invigorating leadership. We hope to attract a vicar who will be keen to develop the church as a hub of the community. We are conscious of the need to increase our contributions to the Common Fund and maintain the restoration programme. We are working on the sources of income open to us including: hall hire, grounds and facilities including the magnificent Willis organ, stewardship programme, income generating projects and grant aid. We strive to encourage others to take part in the Eucharist and seek a vicar who has the imagination, communication and organisational skills to help us achieve this, taking over as our mentor and spiritual teacher as well as strengthening our finances. We aim to continue to promote the mission of the Church and Christian unity whilst maintaining the church for future generations.

Our Mission A summary of our Mission Action Plan • To grow and reach out to the changing local community by promoting the church and its work. • To protect and maintain the Church for future generations.

• To improve accessibility and openness. • To transform lives through celebration and support.

• To maintain the traditions and life of the Church. • Listening, praying and sharing thoughts with confidence.

• Strengthening faith and fellowship by increasing the number of people worshipping at St Anselm’s through compassion and creativity, reflecting the ethos of Capital Vision 2020. • Developing everyone’s gifts.

Electoral Roll, Worship and Prayer We have 130 members on the Electoral Roll, the loss of some members has been replaced by younger parents bringing children to Sunday School and other residents joining us. The average annual weekly attendance was 52 in 2015. 90 people attended the Easter Services and 229 over the Christmas period. Lay members of the congregation are invited to read and present the intercessionary prayers which allows for greater participation in the liturgy. By explaining the importance of supporting the church through giving and improving our communication and openness, we hope to develop ownership and investment in the church. Several parishioners have now become Eucharistic ministers strengthening faith and fellowship. The aims of St Anselm’s are: • To value catholic traditions within the Church of England • To be open, friendly and accessible to all. • To be a faithful and lively house of prayer, praise, teaching and sacrament. • To engage effectively with the wider Church of England in the Deanery and further afield.

An Overview St Anselm’s: a Grade II listed building The grounds of this lovely Victorian church once stretched down to the Uxbridge Road, but it is now tucked away behind the Westfield Park houses and flats and visitors sometimes have difficulty in finding it. When they do, they are surprised to discover such a large and impressive neo Gothic building. The church was completed in 1895 and boasts a number of special features. Many of the arts and crafts stained glass windows were created by Louis Davis (1867-1941), himself a parishioner of St Anselm’s, and made by the local Wealdstone Whitefriars Glass Company. The great West Window was installed in 1915 and designed by Selwyn Image, Slade Professor of Art, Oxford. A magnificent carved oak rood-screen was created for the church by architect Charles Spooner. A booklet on the history of the church is available.

Hatch End Today Hatch End is situated in the London Borough of Harrow, just on the outskirts of North London and the full address now falls under its larger neighbour: Pinner, Middlesex. It is a sought after area with many desirable properties around. 52% of the population in Hatch End are now from ethnic minorities including Hindus, Muslims, Eastern Europeans (many of whom are Roman Catholic) and, with the existing Jewish community in the area, the number of C of E parishioners has reduced over the years. Happily, we have a thriving Sunday School and relatively new additions to the parish electoral roll include people from Sri Lanka, Africa, the Caribbean, Ireland and Russia. The congregation is a relaxed mix of all age groups, socio-economic and ethnic origins. Our recent campaign against the new parking restrictions around the church actually had a positive effect with the associated publicity generated causing many of our new neighbours to enter the church for the first time. Whilst on the edge of NW London, we are still surrounded by green open spaces with woods and common land as well as golf courses and ‘Grim’s Dyke’ with views all over London. Hatch End Station is next to the church, from where you can get in to Central London in 40 minutes.

Traditions St Anselm’s is a traditional Anglican church in the Tractarian tradition. Incense is used as well as vestments of various colour and embroidery to commemorate special occasions. Geographically within the Willesden Episcopal Area, we are under the oversight of the Bishop of Fulham while remaining part of the Archdeaconry of Northolt. The Eucharist is celebrated with noble simplicity and with actual participation of all present under the presidency of the priest. Parishioners read the first two readings as well as lead the intercessions. It is moving to see so many eucharistic ministers giving communion with the priest as well as a fair proportion of young people acting as altar servers. Music and worship go hand in hand at St Anselm’s with sung Eucharists and celebrations on the splendid Willis Organ assisted by the Choir.

Father Clive used to lead regular Lent and Confirmation discussion groups where ways of becoming closer to Jesus and his teachings were explored. Our small but committed congregation is keen to keep this tradition. This friendly church is a beacon for the anglo-catholic tradition on the outskirts of London which helps make St Anselm’s particularly special and attracts local parishioners as well as those from further afield. We pray this will continue and are aware that we need to review, consciously and constantly, how we can attract more people. What we believe as Christians is reflected in the manner of our distinctive worship style, valuing the catholic tradition that has been handed down over the generations.

The Vicarage & Local Information Hatch End Vicarage, 50 Cedar Drive, Hatch End, Pinner HA5 4DE The vicarage is situated approximately 15 minutes walk away from the church. It is a spacious 4 bedroom detached house in a sought after residential area with a sizeable garden and a sunny aspect in the large through lounge. The gardens are laid to lawn and flower beds with an integral garage and drive way. A downstairs reception room is currently used as the Vicar’s office and library. The area is served by a selection of good schools, open spaces and easy access to London, Watford and further afield from Hatch End mainline station. Local information There are many local societies in the area and a full list can be obtained from Harrow Council’s Information Officer or Pinner Library. The Hatch End Bulletin issued by the Hatch End Association lists local services, restaurants and businesses as well as often featuring activities at St Anselm’s. For a list of local services, see Appendix 1.

Fund Raising The Quinquennial Report highlighted many urgent repairs and restoration work necessary to maintain St Anselm’s – to the roof, to the brickwork and various parts of this late Victorian building. Phase I of the restoration cost just under £20,000 and work on the roof started in August 2015, has now been completed. The total cost of the work is around £62,000, but a recent CCTV underground survey of the drainage system has revealed approximately £17,000 further work. The church was awarded a grant of £20,000 from the Willesden Area Council of the London Diocese but the remainder of the cost of the work needs to be raised. Phase II will include repair to underground drainage and spalled brickwork. A structural survey could highlight the need for even more work.

The church has embarked on a ‘Fund Raising Challenge.’ Apart from generous donations by individuals, including the Hatch End Association, various parishioners have been carrying out events during the summer and £12,000 has been raised so far. The events have included coffee mornings, plant & cake sales, raffles, dinner parties and on-line auctions as well as a sponsored luncheon, organ recitals, the Harrow Apollo Male Voice Choir concert and the annual Christmas Fair. Regular Open Days give people an opportunity to see the fine features of the church and have a look at the work that has been done and what still needs doing. St Anselm’s was originally built for the people of Hatch End, so anyone who lives here is welcome even if they are of a different faith or have none.

Communications We work to attract the wider community by regular open days/events and in the hiring out of the church hall. Promoting our services to local businesses and individuals has developed communications and awareness of the difficulties facing the church. We have achieved extensive coverage in the local media with large colour spreads and have developed a good relationship with local journalists and photographers. Features have been published in the Harrow Times, Optima Magazine, The Hatch End Bulletin and the Pinner News. We have established a website which we are continually striving to improve and maintain without cost to the Church www.stanselmshatchend.blogspot.com We are also developing a Facebook presence to encourage more feedback and development within the younger community. Everyone who supplies an e mail address can be kept informed of church activities, news and special events and an online giving website makes it easy to support our fund raising appeals: “BT my donate/The Parish Church of St Anselm.”

The Church Building The Church boasts many special features: a historical leaflet and illustrated booklet have been produced to provide information for visitors. It also houses the Hatch End WW1 Memorial with symbols of the battle fields situated around the reredos beside the altar designed by architect Selwyn Image. The fine Henry Willis organ is used for concerts and services and by students of music. This 121 year old building does require maintenance of course. The interior has recently been painted by two volunteer parishioners which was no mean feat, as the ceilings stand some 25’ high. Recent building works undertaken: The roof of the kitchen, corridor and cloister recovered. Part of the brick work re pointed. The valleys and internal slopes of the roof inspected with remedial work carried out.

The drainage system inspected and a CCTV survey carried out. Gutters and downpipes cleared and repaired.

A narrow gravel strip introduced against part of the plinth brickwork as protection against rising damp. All electrical equipment safety tested. Repairs made to the boiler and hall heater, also to the organ. Restoration work continues…

The Parish Hall The Parish Hall is an integral part of the Victorian church building with gothic arch windows, a kitchen and toilet with disabled facilities. It seats 60 comfortably around tables and is used for church events such as Shrove Tuesday pancake races, fund raising lunches, games and the Sunday School. The church currently rents the hall regularly to amateur dramatic/operatic groups, a Music Appreciation Group and a yoga class. The hall also hosts parties – especially children’s. We are always looking for ways to raise public awareness of the church, its hall and facilities. We are now registered with an on-line hall hire agency and have updated the contract and booking process.

Hatch End is a multi-faith area and we are inclusive in inviting groups of all denominations to use the facilities (unless their beliefs are in opposition to Christian principles). Father Clive always maintained that we should welcome all who live in or work in the parish as he had a pastoral responsibility for them. The hall bookings are vital in reaching out to the wider community and raising awareness of the funds needed for the completion of urgent repair work to the church and maintaining our Common Fund payments. Several nurseries are exploring the potential for running early years workshops in the hall and we are hopeful that this may become possible.

Willis Organ Saint Anselm’s is fortunate to possess a splendid organ by Henry Willis, the father of British organ building. The inscription reads, “In memory of Edward VII 1902-1910”. Formerly the property of The Royal Academy of Music, it was presented to the church by parishioners and friends at a cost of £772 and five shillings and delivered to the church by horse and cart from the Royal College of Music in 1911. There is a brass plaque commemorating Arthur Rackham in appreciation of 50 years as organist and choir master 19021952. A trust was set up in his name to maintain the organ, now sadly exhausted.

Objectives and Achievements Fund Raising for urgent repairs to the church building proved tremendously successful with social events, donations and a successful grant bid, totalling £32,000 by December 2015. This enabled us to complete Phase 1 of the refurbishment programme. We intend to pursue further grant aid opportunities Major annual events promoted include: Christmas Fair; Summer Lunch; Two Open Days with historical tours and talks; Two well attended organ recitals in August and December; The Harrow Apollo Male Choir Concert. Raffle prizes were donated by local businesses and individuals who have supported our publicity and become more aware of the challenges facing the church. Editorial features were published in the Harrow Times, Optima Magazine, and The Hatch End Bulletin about the fund raising drive and parking campaign. Some paid advertising is occasionally used for particular events, sponsored by individuals. Posters are erected around the church and local businesses display our leaflets. We have encouraged the wider community to visit our church and feel a responsibility towards its maintenance and future as they enjoy its tranquillity and the support network to be found there. This reflects the Capital 20:20 vision of developing commitment, confidence and compassion.

In addition to the Sunday Services at 8am and 10am, a daily Eucharist was held during the week in the mornings and evenings. We are now posting weekly updates on the notice board and in the bulletin to confirm times of services with cover from several priests. We hope to return to daily worship as soon as possible.

Popular services attract visitors to the church as well as our regular parishioners especially: The Christmas Carol Concert, the Christmas Eve Children’s Service, Remembrance Day and All Souls & All Saints Services. As a result of our petition against the parking restrictions in Westfield Park presented to Harrow Council, a further consultation has been held and we are hopeful that the restrictions will be reduced to just once a day 10am-11am Monday-Saturday. We have built up a practice of serving coffee after the Parish Mass which plays an important social and pastoral role developing friendships and a sense of community. We open the church on Mondays and Wednesdays to maintain an ‘open presence’ and are working to build this up.

Church in the Community Helping those in need is a demonstration of our faith. Gifts are donated to the Harrow Food Bank at Harvest Thanksgiving and presents are delivered to Harrow Christmas Care, supporting families in crisis. Grimsdyke Schools hold their Carol Services at the Church and Father Clive made regular visits to local schools promoting good relations. Secondary schools in the area are Hatch End High School and Shaftesbury School which is an inclusive school addressing special needs. Bishop Ramsey C of E Secondary School, Ruislip and St John’s C of E Primary School, Stanmore are the nearest church schools to St Anselm’s. The old Commercial Travellers School still hold their annual memorial service at St Anselm’s - the school is at present the Hatch End Arts Centre. Pinner scout group have also held their anniversary events at the church. Unfortunately, there is no Girl Guides or Brownie troop in Hatch End although our Sunday School leader goes to Pinner to lead the Guides there.

The Sunday School often organises trips to which everyone is invited. Church excursions to Walsingham and St Paul’s Cathedral are advertised to all.

Pastoral Care Father Clive regularly visited four residential homes and individual members of our parish who were unable to attend church due to sickness or age to celebrate communion with them and provide some comfort. Members of the church community visit local people who are unwell or need help and we pray for them during the Sunday Eucharist. Coffee, served after the Sunday Eucharist and special services, offers the opportunity for an informal chat with the vicar where anxieties can be shared and celebrations enjoyed.

Life at St Anselm’s Ecumenical Relationships An annual United Service is held with St Anselm’s Parish Church, the Hatch End Free Church (Baptist) and St Theresa’s Catholic Church. This provides a useful opportunity to bring people together. A reciprocal arrangement where we display posters for events held in each of the churches exists. Volunteers

Many volunteers work hard to make our church the friendly and vibrant community it is. Savings are made for the church by not charging for labour and in most cases, materials. These services include: Cleaning the church and maintaining the gardens, flower arranging, providing a weekly bulletin about the Sunday service, notices and prayers and management of the hall. We provide a team of 3 or 4 servers every Sunday. Volunteers launder the linens and the Copes and Chasubles are kept in good condition. Sidesmen provide a warm welcome to worshippers and guide them through the service. St Anselm’s Choir The choir is a small one but made up of enthusiastic members who enjoy singing and support our Church Services. Sunday School We have approximately 18 children who regularly attend Sunday school. The lessons follow the sermon of the week with some old testament stories and celebrations of the main Christian festivals. Several volunteers help run the Sunday school to make it a fun & safe learning environment for the children as well as organizing outside trips. Charlotte New is the Leader and Safeguarding Officer. All those working with children within our church are DBS checked.

PCC Budget 2016 In terms of weekly income, St Anselm’s is not a wealthy parish, as will be seen from the 2015 accounts (see Appendices 2/3). Income from the hall hire contributes to the collection plate and many regular attendees support the stewardship drive paying by Standing Order or weekly envelopes. Income

Facing the Future Our aspirations for the future include: Establishing ‘ownership’ of St Anselm’s: By encouraging more people to take pride in our Church and an active part in Church life. Supporting the Sunday School and enabling outreach work. To be creative in developing links with the wider community: Promoting social opportunities and pilgrimages to the wider community and developing the use of the hall. Providing a sanctuary of peace for troubled minds and to be proactive in supporting people who attend funerals and memorial services at the church. Encouraging families to return following baptisms and weddings. Care for this historic building: Developing plans for better wheelchair access, raising funds for maintenance and refurbishment and exploring grant aid opportunities. Promote the ongoing stewardship programme: To see giving as a necessary part of Christian life and to work for a secure financial base for the future of the church. We hope to develop a Friends Scheme and build upon links with fringe members. Youth, Music and Events: Encouraging participation by schools, colleges, community groups and uniformed organisations.

Communications: Improving access to the community via websites, social media and the introduction of a parish newsletter as well as maximising press coverage. To open the church as often as possible for enquiries, support and prayer. To show that the love of God is for all: Through prayer and sacrament and by our example of love, compassion and concern.

Summary We hope that our new priest endorses the traditional teaching and practice of the Church of England, accepting baptism for all, and can offer the following skills: • •

Empathy and understanding of issues and concerns facing families and individuals. Effective leadership with a willingness to embrace change when necessary. Entrepreneurial drive and excellent communication skills.

Prospective applicants are encouraged to contact the Bishop of Fulham to arrange a visit to the church and parish or to talk informally about the post.

Administrative Information St Anselm’s is situated in Westfield Park, Hatch End HA7 4JL and is part of the Diocese of London, Willesden Area. There is no office at the church. The official correspondence address is: St Anselm’s Parish Church, c/o The Vicarage, 50 Cedar Drive, Hatch End HA5 4DE. It is important to include the words Hatch End on any correspondence as there is another St Anselm’s in nearby Stanmore which can cause confusion. The PCC met seven times during 2015 and are responsible for making decisions on matters of general concern and how funds should be spent. Two members sit on the Deanery Synod, providing an important link between St Anselm’s and the wider structures of the Church. During our period of interregnum, enquiries are being directed to any one of the following officers: PCC Secretary: Jill Whitehead Tel: 07714 200481 [email protected] Church Warden: Roger Bessell Tel: 020 8428 1371 [email protected] Church Warden: Richard Simmons Tel: 07941 532640 [email protected]

Reserves Policy This policy was adopted for the following reasons. Since 2005, in just 10 years, net assets had been reduced from over £170,000 to just over £60,000. This was due to regular excess of expenditure over income - particularly the requirement to pay Common Fund (£43,000 pa in 2015). A large proportion of net assets were previously designated by the PCC to the Fabric Fund (for maintenance and restoration of Church buildings). A continuation of the current trend would result in the PCC running out of operating money within 5-7 years with a further dilapidated Church building. Certain elements are 'Restricted Funds' i.e. funds which have been donated towards specific projects (Restoration Fund) - these cannot be redirected without express permission of donors. General Reserves' (day to day normal running receipts & expenses - including Common Fund contributions) was significantly overdrawn. The policy has a target of maintaining cash reserves in excess of £15,000.
