The Yorkshire and Humber region has a long tradition of and a strong commitment to Public Involvement (PPI), with large numbers of research activities involving a public participation at each level of the research cycle. In addition, participation by the public is fundamental to our user-centred healthcare design work within a number of our Themes. The establishment of the National Institute for Health Research Collaboration for Leadership in Research and Healthcare Yorkshire and the Humber (NIHR CLAHRC YH) in January 2014 provides an opportunity to work with partner organisations across the region to build on and strengthen this work as a component of the Collaboration’s co-production principle and to align regional activities with national need. The CLAHRC YH recognises that patient and public involvement is fundamental to our research. The NIHR requires that each CLAHRC delivers a PPI strategy, as a core component of its activities. CLAHRC YH PPI activity is supported by the establishment of a PPI Working Group, consisting of researchers and academics with expertise in the field of PPI. This working group is supported by a generic advisory group CRAG (Consumers in Research Advisory Group). A PPI Facilitator works to support the delivery of the main objectives of the strategy. This strategy is designed to outline our vision for PPI and the actions that we propose to take to achieve this vision.
Principles Our approach to PPI within CLAHRC YH is based on two key principles: 1. That patients and the public have a right to be involved, engaged with or participate in our work, especially that which directly effects them 2. That patients and the public bring their knowledge of ill health and services that can directly contribute towards our work, thereby increasing its acceptability and applicability.
Strategic Objectives In 2015 the NIHR published the Going the Extra Mile report which challenges researchers to lead by example by working in partnership with the public to deliver high quality research; and was endorsed by the Chief Medical Officer. The report’s 10-year strategic goals form the core of our Strategic Objectives. We will seek to: Page 1 of 4 PPI Strategy WEBSITE January 2016 19/1/2016
