Teacher Talk: What advice would you give to your younger self during your undergraduate college studies? Ms. Somma, Science

Ms. Fanning, Math

If I could give any advice to my younger self during my undergraduate studies, it would be to stick around at school and try new things and meet new people. I wish I had been way more involved. My first year of college, I went away to school at SUNY Oswego. For the rest of my years in undergrad, I went to St. Francis College and commuted to school from home. Because I was so close to home and work, after my classes I would rush out of school and go home to work on assignments or go to work. I could have stayed at school to study in the library and attend study or stress-relief workshops. I would advise myself to be more involved in clubs and activities, to meet more people outside of my classes. I think that would have benefitted me, and offered an even more well rounded experience than the classes and activities I already was participating in.

If I could give any advice to my younger self during my undergraduate studies, it would be to study abroad in a different country. I attended the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, and during my junior year they offered me the opportunity to study for an entire academic year in another country. Many of my friends studied in Spain, Mexico, England, Russia, Italy and Australia! I was nervous to be away from home in another country for such a long period of time, and so I did not pursue this amazing opportunity. I wish that I had taken this opportunity, as it would have given me the chance to see the world and completely immerse myself in a different culture.

Ms. Cippo, AIS If I could give any advice to my younger self during my undergraduate studies, it would be to seek career guidance during my freshman year. I would also advise myself to join clubs, activities and teams, become involved with all aspects of the true college experience. Editor:  Ms.  V.  Maccarone

Mr. Ching, Math If I could give any advice to my younger self during my undergraduate studies, it would be take all the opportunities offered to you. Be a ‘yes’ man. During most of my undergraduate years, I was offered many different types of opportunities that ranged from academic to social. Due to laziness, I ended up saying no to many things and finished college feeling as though I didn’t fully live the ‘college life’.

Mr. K, Math Sometimes less is more.

Ms. Maroulis, Computer Art

Ms. Maccarone, ELA

If I could give advice to my former self during my undergraduate years, I would tell myself to take more diverse electives. Despite the fact that I studied art in school, I have always been very interested in Creative Writing, Science and History, but I took elective courses within my discipline instead of branching out, and now I wish I could enroll in those classes to learn more. I was also lucky enough to take a weeklong trip to Kosovo with one of my professors, and the experience teaching outside of America was life changing. I wish I dedicated more time to learning about other places and cultures to gain a more holistic perspective of the world when I had the opportunity.

I would tell my younger self to take full advantage of everything your school has to offer. I did so much in school, but between tutoring, socials, health services, clubs, and study abroad programs, I could have had an even more rich experience than I already did. And certain things were even free! Never pass up the free stuff.

Ms. Dallaris, Math If I could give my younger self advice, it would be to take more social opportunities. When I went to college I would go to my classes and then go to work after school. I feel that if I stayed on campus more, I would have been more exposed to social opportunities. As long as you balance academics, work, and social activities, you will have a well-rounded college experience.

Ms. Rizos, ELA I’d tell myself to give people a chance. I pretty much did what I had to do in college academically, then went to my work-study job, then my real job, before sitting down to complete assignments for the next day… just to do it all over again. I never accepted an invitation from a new classmate, whether it was for dinner, to join a study group, or to attend school events. Perhaps being more social would’ve granted me better memories.

Mrs. Glick, Math If I could give any advice to my younger self for my undergraduate studies, I would tell myself to choose a school that not only matches my career choice, but also matches my personality. In high school I was involved on teams and in clubs and our school had a lot of school spirit. The college I chose was great for my career choice, but didn't have as much school spirit as I would have liked.

Mr. Demiri, Math If I could give any advice to my younger self during my undergraduate studies, it would be to get involved on campus by joining a student club. Also, form a study group because you do not need to study alone.

Ms. McNamara, ELA I would not change anything about my college years. I worked hard to gain admission to one of the most prestigious schools in the country. I wish it did not cost so much money, but I do not regret the high costs of going to a competitive university. In fact, studies prove there is a direct correlation between the selectivity of a university that a student attends and the money they will earn after college. The more prestigious the college, the more money the person will make. If I could give advice to my younger self it would have been pay attention to all the money I spent at the mall and to choose a higher paid career path.

Ms. Chronas, ELA Despite the fact that I had to work three jobs, help raise my siblings, and go to college full time, I would say stay strong, stay focused, and continue forward through any adversity life throws at you.

Student Spotlight: Our Einstein scholars ponder the college experience… Duha E., 7E1

Mohammed K., 715

The sororities interest me most about college. Joining a sorority can be a lot of fun, and, especially as a freshman, it will give me instant access to a tight knit community. Sororities can help me build a good reputation in a community through volunteer work. Furthermore, sisterhood can be a huge advantage when graduating into the work world.

Based on my college trip to St. Francis College, one new thing I learned is there are gym classes in college, too! You can learn fencing and swimming. I learned that you get to make your own schedule and pick your own classes, but you have to be responsible and make sure you go to class because no one is there to make sure you show up. You just have to do it. This information will help me choose a college because I learned that I need to research things that I’m interested in before choosing what school to go to so that I’m happy with my choice.

Michael Z., 7E2 Three questions I have about college are: How similar is college to high school? How much homework will we get? It is easy to be kicked out of the college?

Radiah J., 7E3 The most important topic that I would like to explore during my visit to Columbia University would be the types of majors and degrees available. I think that is really important to consider before you apply to a college because no matter how good the college is, it might not offer your preferred area of study or desired degree level.

Nathalie M., 711 Based on our trip to Queens College, I learned that my grades have to be good enough to get accepted, it could be costly so I have to save money and, most importantly, to try to look into the subjects and programs that will lead into my career.

Ajani W., 714 I’m looking forward to my class trip next week to FIT! Three questions I have about college are: How hard will college be? Can you pick your own classes for college? Can you sleep in your college?

Shakib S., 716 When I visited Columbia University, I learned about the school symbol and classrooms. We also saw a lot of buildings that were for different subjects, so it helped me understand different subjects I could study. I also learned that I could study subjects that can help me help people in other countries.

Dylan W., 8E1 After going to Yale University, three new things I learned about choosing a college are: don’t choose a college based on the prestige of the school, pay attention to the programs the college offers, and make sure you can afford the tuition. If you choose a college based on prestige, you might not enjoy it once you start college. Second, if you pay attention to the programs they offer, and choose one that is right for you, you will enjoy your college experience. Finally, if you join a college that is too expensive, you might have to drop out before you finish, and you might not have enough money to continue your college experience. On a side note, I found the dining hall at Yale very intriguing. I enjoyed tasting all the different cuisines they offered.

Justin V., 8E3 One thing I learned was that there are different types of colleges available for me. Vaughn College is a specialty college. I also thought about the importance of distance from home. I think I would actually be interested in attending Vaughn College because it would help me become a mechanic or do something with planes.

Layla R., 811 The most important topic I would like to explore at the college is their science and medical programs because I want to be a surgeon.

Eugenia K., 812 When my class visited Columbia University, we learned about the different programs they offer. We went on a tour and saw that college is not only about academics. We also learned about how different college is from our own school.
