Fall Referendum Information continued from page 2

In the coming months, Richfield school district residents will receive information about our upcoming referendum ballot. The ballot will address areas of operational funding and capital bond funding. Operational referendum funding: Operational dollars are spent in classrooms and support students and teachers. The pace of state funding has not kept pace with the funding needed to fully support our students. We need these funds to ensure the long term financial stability of our school system, to continue and improve educational opportunities, and to help maintain or reduce class sizes. Capital bond referendum funding: Capital bonds are spent on buildings and land to ensure that we protect the long term investment our taxpayers made when our schools were built back in the 1950s and 1960s. High quality work went into the building of our school system, but there has not been significant investment since the early 1990s. These funds are needed to support the long term maintenance of our buildings, improve safety, security and traffic flow, as well as make improvements in every building that can support student learning. Watch for updates at richfieldschools.org or contact the Superintendent’s office at 612-798-6000.

All Minnesota school districts have the ability to levy for community education and set up programs and services to meet the local needs of residents. Funding is maintained separately from the K-12 funds, and many programs are reliant on participant fees. A representative Advisory Council is required to meet at least four times per year. The council must be made up of a representative cross section of the community to serve all ages, birth through senior citizen. The Advisory Council works with the staff of the department to make recommendations to the School Board. The move to an independent program this year creates an opportunity for the school district to align Community Education programs and classes with the unique needs of the Richfield community. In this first year of the newly reorganized department, we will be focusing on needs assessment and defining the goals and operations.

Interested in learning more? An informational session about Community Education and the Advisory Council will provide an overview from staff along with brainstorming and networking time among the attendees. Those attending this session are not obligated to attend future meetings or to apply for the Council. Your input is important! 4139 Tuesday Central, Room 102
