PACIFIC UPDATES Kiribati film to premiere in Sydney this weekend The Hungry Tide is the latest documentary from award-winning Australian filmmaker Tom Zubrycki. Shot over the course of many trips to Kiribati, it focuses on issues faced by I-Kiribati communities due to climate change and rising sea levels. The film also raises local concerns about human rights and justice. A few days out from its world premiere at the Sydney Film Festival on Sunday, Heather Jarvis spoke with Tom Zubrycki to find out more about the film and what inspired him to make it.

Construction Contractors for the Upgrading of Nikierere Primary School, Marakei The Government of the Republic of Kiribati, through the Kiribati Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Kiribati Education Improvement Program (KEIP) is funding the upgrading of Nikierere Primary School in Marakei. Tenders are now invited from suitably qualified construction contractors to undertake the building works. Works will include construction of 4 new classrooms, 2 toilet blocks, an office, staff room and associated external works. An existing building will be renovated to provide 4 classrooms and several buildings will be demolished. Rainwater collection, non-potable water supply and a small solar lighting system will also be included. New buildings will consist of reinforced concrete footings, slabs and block walls, timber framed steel roofs and timber framed doors and windows. The works will be let in a single contract, with construction staged to allow continued operation of the school throughout construction. The contractor will be responsible for quantifying and supplying all materials, including imported concrete blocks.
