FOLLOWING THE MESSAGE 1) 3:9 Mankind likes to believe that we are basically good. But deep down, every person knows there is a problem, that something is wrong. 2) 3:9 If you remove the truth of the grip of sin and the need to deal with it, you castrate the power of what Jesus did for us by destroying sin’s grip. The Gospel has nothing to offer if it cannot deal with the power of sin. 3) 3:9 The Gentile rejects God, even though he sees Him in creation, and deserves the wrath of God (Romans 1:18–32). The Jew has God’s Law but fails to follow it and receives no benefit from the privilege (Romans 2:1–3).
Conduct 10) 3:17 Scripture makes clear that peace will never dominate human society until the Prince of Peace returns to establish His Kingdom on earth. 11) 3:18 Fearing God has positive and negative elements: Positive—Believers have reverential fear of God, an awesome awareness of His power and His holiness (Proverbs 9:10). Negative—This aspect of the fear of God has to do with terror (Proverbs16:6). 12) 3:20 The Law only makes us conscious of sin and reveals that we are unable to live up to the requirements of a Holy God. 13) 3:19-20 Every human being, Jew or Gentile, is accountable to God. The final verdict is that mankind has no defense and is guilty of all charges.
4) 3:10-17 Paul presents a thirteen-count indictment against mankind in three categories: character (3:10-12), conversation (3:13-14), conduct (3:15-17). Character 5) 3:10 A person who is not as good as God is not acceptable to God. 6) 3:11 To further complicate the situation, we have no innate ability to fully comprehend God’s standard of righteousness. 7) 3:11 The only person who seeks God is the person who has responded positively to God’s seeking him/her. 8) 3:12 The failure to seek God is more than accidental. The Bible says we deliberately turn away from God. Conversation 9) 3:13-14 A lack of relationship with God is on display when they open their mouths to speak. Character inevitably manifests itself in conversation.
