March 18/19, 2017 Romans 5:14-17

FOLLOWING THE MESSAGE 1) 5:14 Just as Adam was the head of a race of sinners, so Jesus is the head of a new race, the redeemed people of God. 2) 5:14 It is only because God is merciful and not merely just that we can be saved. 3) 5:15-17 To understand it better, note a few general observations:  The repetition of the word “one”—used 11 times Key idea: our identification with Adam and with Jesus  The repetition of the word “reign”—used 5 times Key idea: Adam and Christ each reign over a Kingdom  The repetition of the phrase “much more”—used 5 times Key idea: In Jesus we gain much more than we lost in Adam. 4) 5:14 Just as the one man Adam brought sin to all, so the one man Jesus Christ’s sacrifice made salvation available to all (1 Corinthians 15:22). DISTINCTION IN USE 5) 5:15 The one sin Adam conferred to all his offspring was the sin of deviation. 6) 5:15 Jesus’ one action had infinitely greater impact than Adam’s. 7) “Jesus Christ is much more powerful to save, than Adam was to destroy” ~John Calvin 8) 5:15 The power of sin, which is death, can be broken; but the power of Christ, which is salvation, cannot be broken (2 Timothy 1:10). DISTINCTION IN EXTENT 9) 5:16 Christ’s justification is greater than Adam’s condemnation. 10) 5:16 God hates sin so much that it took only one sin to condemn the entire human race. 11) 5:16 God’s loving grace is so great that He provides not only for the redemption of the one man but also for the redemption of all humanity. Jesus took on Himself the sins of the whole world (2 Corinthians 5:19). DISTINCTION IN ABILITY 12) 5:17 Jesus’ capacity produced the desired result. 13) 5:17 Adam and Eve sinned because they expected to become like God. Their sin action produced the opposite result; they became more unlike Him. 14) 5:17 The intent of the cross was that those who receive the gift of His sacrifice would reign through the One who died for us.
