Romans—Part 34

May 20/21, 2017 Romans 6:8-11 FOLLOWING THE MESSAGE

1) 6:8 Believers are identified with Jesus not only in His death, but also in His resurrection. 2) 6:8 The future tense carries the idea of certainty and assurance. 3) 6:9 Because we are raised with Jesus, we, too, shall never die again. 4) 6:10 Jesus died to sin. He lived a sinless life while on earth. In whatever way Christ died to sin, believers also have died to sin. 5) 6:10 Because death is the penalty of sin (Romans 6:23), breaking the power of sin breaks the power of death. 6) 6:10 Jesus died to sin, once for all. He achieved a victory that never needs repeating, a profound truth that the writer of Hebrews stresses again and again (7:26–27; 9:12, 28; 10:10; 1 Peter 3:18). 7) 6:11 We are immediately spiritually fully alive in Jesus at the time of salvation, but we are still bound in the grave clothes of the old life. Not only that, we are continually tempted to put the old clothes back on (Romans 7:15). 8) 6:11 The best exhortation is always built on knowledge (we do when we know). 9) 6:11 Knowledge activates decisions…what you believe about God determines what you do next. 10) 6:11 God reveals the reason why He calls us to live according to His standards…“Be holy; for I am holy” (Leviticus 11:44). 11) 6:11 A few reasons believers find it difficult to comprehend they’re free from bondage:  Many do not know because they have never heard the truth that because of Jesus, God now sees us as holy.  We battle against an adversary (Satan) who does not want us to believe it.  The reality of being a “new creation” is not experiential; we can’t physically observe it.  The continued battle with sin seems to constantly contradict the truth we hear in church and read in scripture.  We see failure in the lives of others we may consider to have a stronger walk than ourselves. 12) 6:11 Outcomes of living in this reality:  Confidence in temptation, knowing you can stand against it in God’s power (1 Corinthians 10:13)  Confidence because we are saved by God’s power alone, kept by His power alone, and we cannot sin beyond the greatness of God’s grace (John 10:27–29)  Confidence in the face of physical death (John 11:25–26) TODAY’S SONGS “Here for You” words and music by Tim Wanstall, Matt Redman, Matt Maher, and Jesse Reeves © 2011 Chrysalis Music Ltd. | Said And Done Music | sixsteps Music | Thankyou Music | Valley Of Songs Music | worshiptogether.com songs “This I Believe (The Creed)” words and music by Matt Crocker and Ben Fielding © 2014 Hillsong Music Publishing “Good Good Father” words and music by Patt Barrett and Anthony Brown © 2014 Capitol CMG Paragon | Common Hymnal Publishing | Housefires Sounds | sixsteps Music | Tony Brown Publishing Designee | Vamos Publishing | worshiptogether.com songs "Great is Thy Faithfulness" words and music by Thomas O.
