Romans—Part 39

July 8/9, 2017 Romans 7:1-6

FOLLOWING THE MESSAGE 1) A person justified by faith through the grace of Jesus is secure (Romans 5), holy (Romans 6), fruitful, and serving (Romans 7). 2) 7:1 Any law—whether Roman, Greek, or God-given—is only binding on the living. 3) 7:3-4 Romans is not teaching about biblical divorce here. To understand that issue biblically requires study of other passages: Matthew 5:31–32; 19:3–12; and 1 Corinthians 7:10–15. 4) 7:4 As a woman whose husband has died is free to marry again, so also believers, since they have “died to the law,” are free to belong to Jesus. 5) 7:4 The Law can only condemn; it has no power to redeem. 6) 7:4 Paul, through Romans, declares that faith in Jesus means freedom from the Law’s penalty. 7) 7:4 The underlying emphasis of the book of Romans is that salvation produces total transformation. 8) 7:4 The one in whom we died becomes the very one in whom we find our new life 9) 7:4 It stands to reason that a complete change of relationship results in a transformed life. 10) 7:4 The fruit of the Holy Spirit is manifested internally in attitudes (Galatians 5:22–23). The fruit of the Holy Spirit is manifested externally in actions (Hebrews 13:15; Philippians 1:11). 11) 7:6 Believers have been released from their old bondage; therefore, a redeemed person is able to and will do what is right. 12) 7:6 God releases us from our bondage to sin so that we will serve Him. GREEK WORDS Douleuō (dool-yoo'-o)—serve; a derivative of Doulos; to be a slave:- be in bondage, (do) serve (-ice)
