ROMANS—PART 62 Romans 9:6-13 Mark Kring, Senior Pastor April 14 & 15, 2018
1. Paul makes a series of three arguments/examples of the evidence of God’s hand even in the midst of rejection and rebellion. 2. 9:6 First example of God’s sovereign hand: Israel’s rejection of Jesus is entirely consistent with God’s ancient promises. 3. 9:6 Being in the biological line of Israel does not automatically make a person a true child of promise. 4. 9:7 God never promised to save all of Israel. God has always known some would be cut off from the promise and from salvation. 5. 9:7 Second example of God’s sovereign hand: Paul refers to Isaac’s children as Abraham’s descendants. Through his life, the entire nation of Israel (biologically) was brought into a privileged status. 6. 9:8 Just as not all of Abraham’s physical children/grandchildren inherited the promise of belonging physically, so neither do all of Abraham’s children through Isaac belong to the people of God automatically. 7. 9:8 From long before God’s covenant with Abraham (back to Adam), God said the only way a person can become righteous before Him is by faith. 8. 9:8 Paul’s point in Romans 9:6-33 is that Israel’s rejection of Jesus did not prove Jesus was not of God. To the contrary, it proved that unbelieving people of Israel were not of God. 9. 9:8 Israel’s rejection gave further evidence that God’s promise has always been to those who believe as Abraham believed (Galatians 3:29). 10. 9:9 God always raises up at the right time those whom He chooses to accomplish His plan.
11. 9:10-12 Third example of God’s sovereign hand: Instead of giving the twins equal position, God chose Jacob above Esau. 12. 9:11 God chose Jacob and Esau not for what they would do, but so that God’s purpose might stand regardless of human work. 13. 9:13 The best interpretations indicate that the Lord’s hatred is against Esau’s descendants, who rebelled against God and became idolatrous in their behavior. In the same way, God’s love of Jacob refers to his descendants, through whom Jesus would come.
